Is Tyler Smith playing tackle or guard in 2026?

I'm confused.......I thought this was settled. If this is STILL a question, it raises serious concerns they have about Guyton, IMO, not to mention he's competing with Thomas.

Dallas’ offensive line has questions that need to be answered. The Cowboys would love for 2024 first-round pick Tyler Guyton to have a strong camp and solidify his spot as their starting left tackle. But if that doesn’t happen, look for All-Pro left guard Tyler Smith to move out to left tackle. That would weaken their interior, but their hand could be forced.

Schottenheimer said Tuesday that Smith will start at left guard but get tackle reps. He added that right guard Tyler Booker will get work at center.

Thought this was settled and he is playing guard.

I suspected all along that they would try to sign him to guard money then move him to LT, but he is aware.

Ideally you leave him there but if Guyton hasn’t shown improvement I don’t agree with having two Pro Bowl type guards with two turnstile tackles.

There’s a real chance that the “best five” includes Bass over Guyton. Hope not, and hard, but you never want LT to be a question. Not good.

How would they know until they get some reps in? Camp is the time to figure out if someone is ready to be LT. If you aren't seeing that, THEN you start shuffling.

To me, it sounds like option A is Left guard. But if Guyton gets injured or sucks, they would want him to be ready to make the move, and then throw Bass into the mix.

My assumption for 2026 is they would feel more comfortable with Bass playing Guard and Tyler at Tackle than keeping Tyler at guard but playing Cornelius or Shelton out there at LT

Hopefully guyton proves doubters like myself wrong, but this is exactly why they should have gone out and brought in legitimate competition for a tackle spot. I know backups at the position arent cheap but I’d rather find $8m to spend on a plan B for the position rather than have uncertainty around your all pro guard.

Unless Guyton is a total camp bust he will be LT and Smith LG . This should be a non issue for the $$ you’re making the team wants versatility not unreasonable.

How were they supposed to do this? trade back & get Lomu rather than take Caleb?

Trost was available when they took Barham but his draft profile says he will probably be an interior player in the NFL so I'm not sure how that's a sure fire solution to our LT position if Guyton doesn't step up.

first option, yes.

If Guyton isn't cutting it at LT, I would put all options on the table.

If I think he can compete as a RT, I would try this line up Smith, Steele, Beebe, Booker, Guyton. (perhaps flip Booker & Steele but this option first).

If I don't think he is an option at either T, then I have to consider can he be a good G. If so, let him compete.

I would try to get my best 5 on the field and I would lean toward the most experienced players first.

its an option to play LT for cowboys because Guyton has underwhelmed. that's the cowboys acknowledging that and also lighting a fire under guyton to get his butt moving and improve or else.

if Guyton underwhelms at LT, then he is a RT candidate....or a swing tackle candidate, until steele is cut next year and they move guyton over.

We've seen enough reps of Tyler Smith at tackle and at guard, to know that he's a lot better guard. The dropoff is pretty steep... he's an All-Pro at LG and average at LT.

If Guyton bombs might try to put Smith at LT again and line up TJ Bass at LG, in the name of "getting our five best on the field". But that's setting Smith up to fail and he knows it.

'Fail' is a bit strong IMO.......he certainly won't be as good, but I think he will hold his own.
BTW.......just my take, but even IF he's moved to LT, I don't think it would be permanent. Just for the season until they can draft or find a replacement.

That's one problem but Schotty suggested he still having issues with footwork and hand placement. That's wild as a former 1st round pick going into his 3rd year. It also shows the level of on concerns they have about his ability to start IMO.
