So, what your saying is, the Cowboys don't have to reach again for a DE in the 2018 draft.

Gregory failed his 8th drug test in April, AFTER he was suspended for the entire 2017 season.

Why are people acting like he’ll be able to play next year....?

I still believe Irving has yet to realize his full potential.

Right now, he is not doing a lot more than beating his man athletically. If you watch him, he is all about his length and snap quickness.

He needs to be ridden hard to realize how good he can be. If he develops better technique, then he would be pretty amazing.

** With the way he is playing, I wonder if the Cowboys already have to pencil in a first-round tender offer to defensive lineman David Irving as a restricted free agent this offseason. The Cowboys could put the second-round tender on him, but that might not scare off every team in the league from making an offer sheet to Irving. Teams with beaucoup amounts of salary-cap space might be willing to give up a second-rounder for Irving, who is showing he can play end or tackle. A first-round pick is a little different story. Irving has six sacks in four games this season. He admits to wondering what kind of numbers he would have in a full season. So do the Cowboys. But considering the price it will take to keep defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence, who is set to be an unrestricted free agent, the Cowboys’ budget might be tighter than expected.

It is a no brainer to tender him with a first. They may need to look at other options as well.

If he keeps up his sack totals the rest of the year at the same pace, even a first might not stop some rush hungry team from surrendering the pick for him.

If Irving keeps playing like he has been we will have to think about signing him long-term rather than tendering him a 1st round tender. There might be a lot of teams next year with a crap ton of cap that would gladly part with a late first rounder for a disruptive defensive lineman who can play DE or DT. This could be the toughest decision for the Dallas FO next off-season.

Through 4 games, he has 15 combined tackles, 6 sacks, 4 pass deflections, and one INT. Kansas City got to see firsthand the other day what they allowed to get away.

It looks like he has put it all together now while he was showing flashes last season. If he keeps it up and behaves off the field, he's a must resign. Just a freakish talent - we've been hard on this coaching staff, but this is a developmental player. He came into the league raw and in his third season, he's looking like he can be one of the better DT/DE in the league.

Send him to Randy White to learn some hand and arm skills.

Isn't there a first and a third tender available? I know there used to be.

Dude, please keep us updated if you hear anything. Saw Gordon was recently allowed to play

Imagine RG lining up opposite Tank, with Irving at the 3T...
I know what I'll be dreaming about tonight.

My ideal DL would be:

Base:

RDE - Lawrence
LDE - Irving
3 Tech - Collins
1 Tech - %$$ing sign or draft a real 1 tech

Pass D:

RDE - Lawrence
LDE - Charlton or draft pick like a Nick Chubb
3 Tech - Irving
1 Tech - Collins

What cannot be overstated here is when Marinelli made the change and put Irving at the 3 and Collins at the 1. It's been flourishing ever since. I would still like to see Lewis Neal come up and backup Irving at the 3. Talk about some motors!!

1st round, easily.

Would you let him go for a first? IDK what I would do with that. That's tempting but the player you get in return probably won't be as good as Irving is the first year.

On the other hand Irving is a bit of a bone head and will get paid a LOT of money over the next 5 years. If you draft a guy in the first round you will have cheap labor for 5 years. You would probably save about 8 million per year ($40 million total) by letting him go for a first round pick. That's significant.

I am confused on this buyback a I thought that as a RFA that teams can't negotiate with your player.

They can, but you can match the deal or take the draft pick as compensation if you choose to not to match.
1st round tender for this past offseason was worth 3.91 million fwiw.

Depends on the deal given to Irving. If a team loads up the first year, or gives him a Vernon type deal then maybe I let him go.

That's where it may get a tad tricky for the Cowboys if Irving continues this type of production.
A team may see Irving easily worth a first and the contract, especially if they are picking late in the draft/have a need for pass rusher.
On the other hand, giving him a long term deal before he officially becomes a RFA can backfire if this past year happened to be a "one year wonder". We will pay D-Law either a Franchise tag or a long term deal. Not sure the Cowboys want to give another huge deal to a D-line men unless they deem is absolutely necessary.
