It's over..Give me T. Smith

Simply not true. Smith will be under a rookie contract which after the new CBA will likely have nothing to do with the position he plays. By the time Smith's rookie contract is up, Free will be 33 years old, and we'll probably need a new LT or swap the two by then anyways.

33 years old is still a very good age for O-linemen, particularly tackles who, the good ones, usually last until their late 30's. Not to mention that, like Tony Romo, Free spent his first 3 years on the bench, rarely playing, which means less wear and tear than the typical starting LT.

Does he look flabby?

Honest question, I'm at work and can't read the whole thread. Want to know if it looks like he can keep this kind of weight on.

Tyron Smith could be the cornerstone draft pick to start the rebuilding on the offensive line. Felix Jones and Tony Romo need this guy bad. He's the guy I want leading the way for Felix Jones and protecting Tony Romo. He's the best OT in this draft. A 20 year old OT, with RT experience, who has the skill set of a franchise LT...Are you kidding me? The Cowboys will make Smith a Jedi Master, Little Lane.

Nearly 37 inch arms...Wow.. 307 baby...

Glad to read Hostile telling about how Smith was heavily scouted by the Cowboys. I didn't know it. That gives me a little more hope. I read an interesting rumor on Vela's site about the Cowboys and Smith.

Smith is a cornerstone player and is only 20 years old and will turn 21 in December.

IF there is a rookie scale. And IF there is a deal before the draft. What if that does not happen?

I'm not so sure. Here's a list of some of the best LT frome the last decade and when they retired:

Boselli - 31
Ogen - 34
W Jones - 36
Tarik Glen - 31
W Roaf - 35

Most of those guys were in real decline or retired by 33.

Either way I don't get the excuse that a RT is not worth the #9 pick. Think St Louis is mad that they spent a top 10 pick on Jason Smith? Having two good bookend tackles is critical in today's NFL, pressure doesn't just come from the Left anymore.

You really think there's a difference between LT money and, say DE money at #9? It will all be the same.

Tyron Smith? Dude is ripped all to hell. He isn't fat like many offensive linemen.

wasn't there serious interest in this guy from Jerry and the scouts before this whole process even started? Back in October/November?

That is pre weight gain..according to Bunting, even w the added weight he is still chiseled

The hype is growing on this guy so quickly, he may not even be there at #9.

wow are some people here actually worried about 7 years from now? or what age free will be when smith's rookie contact is up? blah blah . c'mon guy's get reel. we all want to win and now! If our scouts and coaches think this kid is ready to step in and play SOON then lets get him and not look back. The only way i wouldnt want to use #9 on him would be if the cowboys thought he was a redshirt type guy .

Im cool with any ofensive lineman in the first as long as it isn't Solder or Castanzo.

I think we are on the same page here. My point is to not let Doug Free be an excuse to not draft Smith if scouting thinks he is a player. The rest will sort itself out with time.

I'm well aware of that, but my question is does the added weight just appear to be fat, and therefore easily lost after a hard training camp?

You see what I'm getting at here?

As noted by GloryDaysRBack, Wes Bunting said he is even more ripped than before.

Boselli was a wreck due to injuries, which is why he was basically a " forced " retirement. Tarik Glenn and Walter Jones were basically the same thing as Boselli. Ogden could still play today if he wanted to, but he simply didn't want to anymore. He, pretty much, pulled a Barry Sanders, ie: retired when he could still play at a pretty high level.

If you look at the Hall of Fame ( which is the best of the best ), you'll see guys like Bruce Matthews, Gary Zimmerman, Forrest Gregg, Jackie Slater, Ron Yary, who played well into their late 30's, some in their 40's ( Slater ). And with today's training and medicine, this linemen ( the good ones ) tend to last longer. FLO is 35 and will probably play next year again. The late Tui played until his 37th birthday, Jumbo Elliot... etc..etc..

As for the RT theory, the Rams drafted Smith with the intention of him being their starting LT, not RT. I don't know how he's been doing, other than something didn't go as the way they planned when he's starting at RT and a rookie ( Stafford ) started at LT last year for them. I can pretty much assure you that had the Rams known that Smith wasn't going to be able to handle the LT position, they wouldn't have drafted him 2nd overall in the draft.

You are right in that in today's NFL pressure doesn't come just form the left anymore, but that's still where the best pass rushers line up for the most part. Even so, I agree with you in that regard which is why I've been advocating shoring up the middle of the O-line ( G, C, G ) even before the tackles, but unfortunately, highschools and colleges are still playing the best talent at LT and then RT, so the NFL has to roll with the punches.

If he's got a good head on his shoulders, would be worth the risk at #9

Gotta make sure he's not another Barron

" ripped to hell ", " rediculous low body fat ", " as fast as some linebackers ", " just 21 years old " (when drafted), " room to grow "

4th round draft pick, current back up.

If beach bodies mattered, the NFL would be in SoBe (FL ) and Venice Beach ( CA), and just about every LA Fitness center around the country looking for O-linemen.

I would take him if Peterson is no there. If we could him in a trade down and gain extra picks that would be a bonus. He stoned the best player at the Senior Bowl this year in Cam Jordan. With the weapons that we have at the skill position, protecting Romo would be key.

The ages listed are close to the current Cowboys OL age with the exception of Free. How is that working out ? Many fans think that o-linemen are just hitting their prime at 30 but the facts show otherwise. Injuries usually pile up on linemen in their early 30s. Look at Kosier , Columbo, both have injuries every year. Gurode has knee problems and Davis hasn`t aged well. Keeping linemen past 30 is asking for trouble IMO. I agree with everything you posted.
