Or Denver releases him so he can sign with Houston

I would not be surprised to see Denver talking with Houston about a trade. Local reports are that Houston is willing to give up a pick to get Jake. Denver has a chance to get a pick or they will play hardball and let Plummer retire but then Jake will not be able to go any where’s for at least 1 year

PLUMMER RETIREMENT A PLOY?

There's talk/speculation/ in league circles that Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer is using the retirement card as a ploy to get traded to Houston.

Though there was a report a week ago out of Denver that Plummer could pack it in, there was no hard evidence that he might quit until after news broke that Plummer would be traded to the Bucs for a fourth-round pick.

If Plummer retires, he'd potentially owe the team the portion of any signing bonus that applies to the three remaining years of his contract. And the Broncos have a history of playing hardball in matters of this nature -- just ask Dale Carter, Daryl Gardener, Eddie Kennison, and Ashley Lelie.

Report: QB Plummer to retire
NFL.com

(March 2, 2007) -- NFL Network's Adam Schefter has learned Denver Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer is expected to announce his retirement.

Earlier today, it had been reported that the Broncos agreed to terms on a trade that would send Plummer to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick. That trade is expected to be nullified due to Plummer's decision to retire.

Plummer has played 10 seasons in the NFL. A second-round draft pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 1997, he played six seasons in Arizona before signing with Denver in 2003. He led the Broncos to the 2005 AFC Championship Game, but was replaced as the starter late in the 2006 season by rookie Jay Cutler.

No way should Denver give in to this sort of blackmail. Let him rot.

It's business. The guy can and should use any form of leverage he can.

agreed, and why should denver "let him rot" when they can get a late round pick or so out of him?

some people are far too busy making football personal and not the business that it in fact is.

I think Brad Johnson is a perfect backup for this team. Not long term starter, but backup that can come in and win a game if he had to.

I said that at the beginning of the week when I heard rumbles of Johnson being let go up in Minnesota. I think he'll be a good mentor to young Romo.

Um, Denver already got their pick, remember? The deal was done. Plummer erased that with his selfishness.

This isn't "business" (a terrible euphemism, btw); it's a contract violation. Plummer is not a free agent; he does not have a no-trade clause; he does not control his own destiny. He goes where Denver tells him to go. Period. He doesn't like Tampa? Tough. He will not blackmail Denver into accepting less compensation from another team.

Uh...actually, no, he can retire at any time he wants to. It's leverage. This is two parties negotiating at arms-length. That's business. He can use whatever leverage he has.

Just like Elway did to the Colts or Manning with SD. Broncos clearly have the right to play hardball and have Plummer sit in retirement. Then again they have a chance to get something in return should they be willing to work with Jake.

And "leverage" is a euphemism for "blackmail." Leave "business" to the businessmen. Somehow I think you'd be less than sympathetic to Mr. Plummer and his wily ways if you were a Broncos fan. Or if Walker had pulled this crap in '89.

Get your panties out of a wad. It's business. These guys earn a living by performing services. Don't let your emotions run wild like a teenage girl.

I've always felt Plummer is Quincy Carter without a drug problem. Good riddance if he retires - he's held the league hostage for long enough.

Bob Barker has slept with more women on accident than most men have on purpose. He is a true American hero.

you musta crapped out a live cow when elway did his little dance to get where he wanted, huh?

selfishness? cause at this point in his career he wants to choose where to go? PU-LEASE. the world doesn't revolve around your own whacked out view of morality and this isn't the military - he can call it quits whenever the hell he damn well pleases.

sometimes i think you say things that would make the stupid marvel at it's stupidity on purpose. if you want room to move in this world you should try giving it as well. if plummer would rather quit than go to tampa, why should he have to take a job he doesn't want just because denver doesn't want him anymore either?

get down off that horse before you hurt yourself.

odd, you've been acting a lot more like jerry falwell lobbing out your morality like it should fit everyone and then getting indignant when you realize it doesn't.
