You can also argue the opposite and say trade Cooper for example. Why?
- The current offensive formula of passing the ball so much isn't winning. The Cowboys most successful teams of the last few seasons, were balanced & more run oriented, with guys like Zeke and Murray leading the league in rushing. And with or without Zeke, they need to be more balanced. Ironically, the Browns have committed to becoming more of a running team this season, even hiring Bill Callahan. And they made that commitment despite having OBJ & Landry at receiver, talent at TE, and the 1st overall pick in the 2018 draft at QB. So Rose had an example of the opposing view to his argument on the opposite sideline during the same game.
- More focus on running the ball early, could also potentially help them control the clock, as TOP is terrible so far this year...and it could also help take a bit of pressure off of an offensive line that is trying to replace T-Fred, not to mention both starting tackle positions being in flux and Williams still getting driven back at times in pass protection. Unfortunately, turnovers and horrendous defensive play have dug some deep holes early and negated the run game at times.
- The teams deepest position is WR. Yes, they paid Cooper and drafted Lamb, but one happened before the other and they also lost Cobb. And no one expected Lamb to be there. Gallup, Lamb, Wilson, Brown, and even Schultz, have all stepped up. While Copper definitely creates some opportunities, they would seemingly still have enough weapons to produce in the passing game in a balanced offensive attack.
- So far, the two worst contracts they've recently doled out, are on the defensive side of the ball with Lawrence and Smith. Rose said they 'paid the defense' lol ... but how's that worked out?
To begin attempting to fix the secondary, I would get on the phone and attempt to trade for Vikings safety Anthony Harris, who is playing on a 1 year contract after being unable to reach a deal with the Vikes. The CB position has been without both starting CB's and replaced Jones with a promising rookie that's gonna take his lumps. The safeties however, have been terrible for a long time in Dallas, and this year, they are often the reason for these big plays over the top. Not to mention, their poor tackling.
