Year 2 give him some time.
He was from a small, school which probably does not have the better coaches compare to the top schools.
The NFL can be very overwhelming the 1st year as well now facing much better talent.

Let's see how / if he progresses this year. I would for him to succeed. For several reasons. He is a Dallas Cowboy would be a good success story from a smaller school....remember Jerry Rice.....
Jerry Rice rookie season___1985:
1ST ROUND PICK \16TH OVERALL in the 1985 draft.
Picked on a team that were the NFL Champions for the previous season = 1984.
Played in 16 games, started 4.
49 catches for 927 yards = 18.9 yds per rec, 3 TD; Rec YD/game =57.9
6 rushes for 26 yds and 1 TD.
Comparing Tolbert's start in the NFL to Rice's = really bad ---nonsensical.

 right maybe more like slow developer like Austin who became a very good wr despite Hammy issues. If not for the hammy, he could have been pretty good here for while.,

They do not give rookie draft picks one year contracts for a very good reason.

Here's the other part of Tolbert's draft profile.

I was not comparing them, how did you get that?
I made a statement coming from small schools, and anyone should know there was no comparison.

-From NFL.com:

Silky smooth athlete who has morphed into a monster over the last two seasons. Tolbert is a high-character prospect with skill elements that are dripping with NFL potential. He gave work to everyone he faced, including SEC cover corners at Tennessee. His three-sport background offers unique perspective to pull from at his position, and his route-running gives him a leg up in camp battles early on. His traits, talent and production should push him up the board, and dialing up the competitive spirit could turn him into a top-flight WR2.

Where's THAT guy? lol. Sounds like a stud
Draft profiles are usually pretty meaningless. They can make a turd sound like a stud, and a stud sound like a turd

A smaller factor in going WR at 26 is you’re essentially throwing this guy away.

Repeat….not a big factor, but a factor they will probably consider.
Tolbert is probably the reason why they are looking at a WR at 26

The Cowboys dress 5. Where does a new WR fit?

CeeDee Lamb
Brandin Cooks
Michael Gallup
KaVontae Turpin
Jalen Tolbert
They could easily fit at number 5 if Tolbert doesn’t step up. He could end up in a pretty good battle just to make the team. If he’s not good enough to suit out for every game this upcoming season, he may end up at cut casualty.

'jazzcat22'... that you invoked Jerry Rice into your comment about Jalen Tolbert...instead of just making a general reponse about some small school players can make it.
Your point could have been made better listing a few other players- JMO.

Not really. You don’t look to draft a WR in the first round because your third round pick from a year ago isn’t panning out. CeeDee is it going to be looking for a big contract and although it’s likely we’ll re-sign him there’s no guarantees. There’s no guarantee that Gallup will return to form. Cooks has been bouncing around so he may not be here very long. There’s a number of reasons why we may take a WR high.

They aren't cutting last years 3rd round pick.

They didn't spend the 88th pick one year just to turn around and cut the guy the next.

The coaches get too aggressive at times forcing multiple positions on players. You should only do that if a player shows the aptitude to handle it. Hopefully he was just overwhelmed as a rookie with what they threw at him and a focus on 1 wr spot can straighten him out.

It’s possible they could move on if he continues not to be good enough to make the game day roster. He just got pushed further down the depth chart with the addition of Cooks and if we draft a WR he could end up in a battle with them. It’s not like the Cowboys are going to be all that tied to a third round pick. I’m not the only one who thinks he could be fighting for a roster spot.

IMO - NFL teams' evaluation of collegiate football talent is a seperate process for each franchise.
Draft profiles are just a result of sports media reviewing deficiencies of all the teams - and which highly regarded prospects can be earmarked to erase those holes.

“dialing up the competitive spirit could turn him into a top-flight WR2.”

So this glowing scouting report targets turning him into a #2 wr, and it questions his competitive spirit.
That explains a great deal about his rookie season. Rightfully placed at the bottom of the depth chart as a rookie, maybe the lack of competitive spirit put him in a shell instead of battling the way Houston battled.

I hope he learned something.

Except the Cowboys don't dress 6 WR's on game day. So try again.
I'll stick with that. Dress the best five that was more of a depth chart, keep in mind Gallup has played 2 full seasons out of 5.

I mean we got down to where Noah Brown was getting reps for us last season. You need 5 guys and Cooks is not a long time solution. Hell at this point I don't even know if Gallup is. I see one receiver who should be long term and that's Lamb.
Ah……we actually do agree on something at times, lol.

here’s to Gallup getting back on track and being a solid target for Rayne Dakota to throw to.
