Carpenter can handle that spot in either scheme. I think he would be even better in a 4-3 because of his versatility.

Oh, he can handle the position (3-4 OLB), but so can Singleton. I agree with you about the 4-3; he'll be a force there (4-3 SLB), and it looks like the switch is all but certain.

Singleton was a huge, huge disappointment as a fill-in this past season. As much as Ellis losing time hurt, his performance only made it worse.

That was one player who Coach Parcells was a fool to trust, and keep.

There wasn't much of a difference when Carpenter was in. In fact, half the time Singleton looked better against the run.

Once Carpenter got a clue late in the year it was clear he was better.

Singleton's ineptitude versus the pass is what bothered me more.

In retrospect, it wasn't the best move. I agreed with it at the time, but Coach Parcells was wrong. Dead wrong. It was a case of his conservative nature biting him.

It was clear in the Seattle game that he was better. Beyond that, there was no real difference.

They need to be good at both, actually. And the left side is hardly the strong side. Statistically teams run at both sides pretty evenly. I've even seen statistics where some teams run to the (offensive) left more often. Regardless, both OLBs (in a 3-4) or DEs (in a 4-3) should be large enought to rush the passer and take on the run.

In the end, Carpenter wasn't exactly impressive on the outside at either stopping the run or rushing the passer. The position requires someone a little bigger and a little stronger.

exactly, it's natural for an opposing team to run at the weaker DE, hell, teams run at RDE Dwight Freeney all day to neutralize him

You do know that he (Moss) would have to play on the strong-side in a 4-3 right?

You wouldn't put a "Moss" or a "Ware" or a "Jason Taylor" type as a strong-side DE in the 4-3. They aren't big enough.
