Jason Garrett: Brandon Weeden is still a young player who is ‘growing before our eyes’

There is an error in the article:

Weeden turned 31 in October, but didn’t start playing pro football until he was 28.

He was drafted by the Browns, he didn't start playing professional football until he signed with the Cowboys. Cleveland might pay its players, but they are professional in the same way that the Washington Generals are professional playing against the Globetrotters.

Weeden is nothing more than a relief pitcher. When he can come in mid game, he's not that bad.

When he has to start? He gives up three runs in the first inning!

I'm pretty sure that nobody could believe their eyes in the AZ game.

If Vaughan is a future starter then he should be good enough to be the #2 this year.

I'd prefer this over keeping Weeden because it opens up another roster spot. If it's close this preseason, Dallas should just go with Vaughan as the backup.

That's where I am on it. Weeden isn't nearly as bad as some make him out to be, however he isn't a long term solution either and the team isn't winning a Super Bowl with him so why waste a roster spot?

If you need to throw a ball threw a wall weeden is your guy, he has a cannon, if you need to throw it through a window, and I am not talking bay window more like basement window, then weeden is not the guy.

INDIANAPOLIS – Tony Romo, Brandon Weeden and Dustin Vaughan made up the Cowboys depth chart at quarterback last year.
Romo had arguably his best season, completing nearly 70 percent of his passes and posting a career-high passer rating of 113.2

During his first year with the club, Weeden appeared in five games, starting one, a 28-17 loss to Arizona. In that game, the former first-round pick completed 54.5 percent of his passes for 183 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Do the NFL drug test the head coaches?

Here's hoping if he's on the roster he never plays except to take a knee as the clock winds down.

Arizona's defense can make anybody look bad. Heck, they made the playoffs with Ryan Lindley at QB. Weeden can be a serviceable back up.

He turns 32 in October.

I believe he's referring to him being young as far as his NFL experience Weeded just completed his 3rd NFL season. Although he's 32 he still a developing player.

That's true, and it gets overlooked.

To be fair, though, AZ didn't just make Weeden look bad. He was atrocious. Just helpless.

OK but when will he be ready? Before it's time to retire?

In Weeden's defense he did look good in the relief appearances he made. He looked so good against Washington reliving an injured Romo that most felt the Cowboys should have kept him in. Too much is being made of his only start vs AZ they were arguably the best team in the league at 9-1 and their defense was playing lights out. After watching Romo get sacked 5 times the previous week vs there blitz I'm not so sure Romo would have looked a lot better than Weeden vs AZ's blitz. Romo might not have gotten out of that game in one piece had he played. I'm not thrilled with Weeden but he did complete 6-8 passes with 2 TD's and had passer ratings of 145.1, 100.0 and 158.3 in relief of Romo. I believe too much is being made of his only start with the Cowboys vs a very good Cardinals team. I still prefer him over Vick who some are clamoring for.
