I doubt anyone here lives their lives or does their parenting in the same hardline way they expect players and coaches to live theirs. It's easy to sit on your *** at a desk somewhere and tell the world how players should act, what coaches should say, how discipline should be handled, etc. It's another to balance being a human being with the expectations and demands of being a professional athlete or coach.

I don't get it. We are not talking about kids here. We are talking about adults. How does parenting apply to this situation?

It just means that Garrett can say all the right things, talk about accountability, right kind of guys, etc. and at the end of the day, when those slogans and catch phrases are actually challenged, he either will not or cannot enforce them.

What else would you suggest Garrett do here to enforce accountability? I'm just curious what others think a more hard line option is for an NFL coach.

What excuse? He was fined by the team and they have talked with him. What was the discussion behind closed doors? I don't know and Garrett is not going to say. there should be accountability within the confines of that locker room it is not what you do in public. People outside of the Dallas Cowboys feel they must know and if they don't then they don't think there is accountability. I don't happen to share that view I think when it comes to a team matters like this should be done in the confines of the team not for public consumption.

It appears players on the team were not happy with the situation, I would think they would now if Dez was being held accountable.

This is absolutely the problem. There's a hoard of DC media hacks, some of which are good at their jobs, some not. They all clamor to have the absolute first snippet of a story, then rush to blow up that partial info into a headline so that they can get their clicks.

I understand why they have to do this in the instant-news world, but what happens is you end up with a piece of a story that has front-run any possible explanation from those who have one.

Then when the actual explanation comes, it's deemed inadequate due to all the judging and debate that has occurred from the original click bait.

If I owned the team, I would not allow the media access to my locker room or my coaches, period.

League expects teams to give access to the media both coaches and players which is fine but the coaches are not obligated to get into details of team matters. Garrett addressed it and the team has fined Dez, really nothing more he needs to add to it.

Yes but Garrett preaches accountability, use lose credibility when you preach one thing and then don't enforce it IMO.

There are plenty of things you could do besides fine him and move on if in fact you where committed to accountability.
And you have no idea the extent this is being handled behind closed doors. All you know is what is being given to the media.

Ideas to produce accountability other than what has already been done.

  • Fine him his entire 2016 salary
  • REquire Dez to apologize individually to everyone with legit tears in his eyes.
  • Bench him for no less than 8 games. When the cowboys lose games, that'll teach him,
  • Bring back public stocks and lock him in for no less than 24 hours
  • Confiscate his phone and post all his photos to instagram
  • Cut off his pinky finger. Just at one knuckle, let's not get crazy.
  • Re-hire Bill Parcells for one day and lock them in a room so bill can chew him out.

This makes sense. Dez is a lot of things but he isn't directly harmful to the team and is largely misunderstood imo. To my knowledge he's not really known to blow off meetings etc.. I think he's a good kid at heart and it was just too much for him to stomach getting a diagnosis that his season was over especially after last year. Imo nothing pleases him more than being in battle with his teammates and contributing to winning. I think his actions were wrong but I don't think this is the big firestorm-dysfunction-blowup-trade Dez situation many are making it.

I would not be happy with it either if I was a player and saw a teammate missing meetings or not taking care of business. However that does not change the fact that a HC should not be out there in front of the media giving out details.

Finally someone delivers with some fresh ideas!!!

I read somewhere here at CZ that there was a rumor Dez was out with JayZ after the game or on Monday night. I don't know if that is true or not. If so, next time (and I'm sure there will be a next time with Dez) maybe try contacting JayZ about where Dez is. :)

Dez has been a Cowboy for 7 years and he is still acting like a drama queen. Time to grow up. And I am not buying this excuse about afraid of bad news. Dez did tweet (according to a post here at CZ)that he "came back in and caught a TD LOL," didn't he? So, something does not add up to me from what I read.

My guess is it's a bigger deal to people here than it is to anyone on the team..
Exactly, I bet there's people on here that actually think players are pacing around the locker room, rubbing their hands together muttering to themselves about Dez missing some time.

Maybe JayZ holds him accountable.

For example?

Don't cover for him when you can't even contact him, say what it is.

When you do address it, don't say it is because Dez is emotional he did not do the right thing, say it is unacceptable with the kind of culture we are trying to build here.

Let the team know it is unacceptable, it sure seems like some of the players were a little steamed.

Is this one incident a huge deal we will be talking about 2 weeks from now if the Boys are stringing wins together, no.

But if you are going to preach accountability, walk it.

All my posts in this thread will now have the word accountable. I'm looking for you all to hold me accountable on my commitment.

Plenty of things like what? Dez is a veteran. He knows what he should be doing and what he shouldn't.

I just don't think you guys are being realistic here as far as what can be done. Holding people accountable doesn't always equate to punishing someone or some form of punishment.

That is the part that least bothers me, the part that does the most is:

Garrett said Dez Bryant missed an MRI and a treatment on Monday. He missed a team meeting on Tuesday, and he was not at a meeting Wednesday"

Garrett said Dez Bryant didn't handle it the right way. It has been addressed

To me that is all there is to it, everything else is a excuse.

Some want to say it makes no difference just Dez being Dez, nothing to see here, fine have at it. But to me it speaks to accountability to your team and teammates.

I happen to think that is important in a team sport, others can disagree and they are entitled to their opinion.

Maybe they fined him pretty heavily, which would at least be a start.

He. Was. Fined!

That is appropriate for this. What do you think should be done? Dez sit out a series? Be suspended by the team? Cut? Traded?

I feel like some of you want a public lashing. Enough is enough.
