There are many fascinating under-the-fold storylines to this year's draft.
One of the storylines that I'm fascinated in is whether Jason Garret was creating a smoke screen at Monday's pre-draft conference or was simply shooting from the hip.
I think the predominant impression is that Garrett is a pretty high-integrity guy who typically holds his cards close to the vest, but when he does speak, he doesn't really come across as deceptive. He also is widely perceived as very even-keeled, and not extreme in his rhetoric, either positive or negative (like Bill Parcells, but without the colorful personality).
On Monday, Garrett was effusive in his praise/analysis of Jalen Ramsey. He used terms like "high-level impact player" and "he leaps off the tape" [said that one twice]. Jerry backed him up by relating the story (like a giddy school girl) that Jalen got thrown out of practice twice for being overly aggressive.
It almost sounded like a post-Day-1 Draft Conference when the team introduces the player selected in Round 1 and gushes over how brilliant the pick was.
The tone really struck me, especially Jason's.
So, I am going to be fascinated to see if Ramsey is still on the board at #4 (I think he will be), whether the War Room jumps all over it, or picks someone else.
Often times, the staff seems to telegraph who we are picking (Tyron Smith, Marcus Sears, Bobby Carpenter, Byron Jones, etc.). I haven't really seen a deliberate smoke screen from this team that I can recall.
It will be interesting to see if Jason & Co. were trying to create an artificial market for Mr. Ramsey's services, in the hopes that "their guy" would still be available at #4, or if they were simply being completely straightforward with their praise for the player that they really want at #4 (Jalen Ramsey).
