Jason Garrett: Smoke Screener or Straight Shooter?

There are many fascinating under-the-fold storylines to this year's draft.

One of the storylines that I'm fascinated in is whether Jason Garret was creating a smoke screen at Monday's pre-draft conference or was simply shooting from the hip.

I think the predominant impression is that Garrett is a pretty high-integrity guy who typically holds his cards close to the vest, but when he does speak, he doesn't really come across as deceptive. He also is widely perceived as very even-keeled, and not extreme in his rhetoric, either positive or negative (like Bill Parcells, but without the colorful personality).

On Monday, Garrett was effusive in his praise/analysis of Jalen Ramsey. He used terms like "high-level impact player" and "he leaps off the tape" [said that one twice]. Jerry backed him up by relating the story (like a giddy school girl) that Jalen got thrown out of practice twice for being overly aggressive.

It almost sounded like a post-Day-1 Draft Conference when the team introduces the player selected in Round 1 and gushes over how brilliant the pick was.

The tone really struck me, especially Jason's.

So, I am going to be fascinated to see if Ramsey is still on the board at #4 (I think he will be), whether the War Room jumps all over it, or picks someone else.

Often times, the staff seems to telegraph who we are picking (Tyron Smith, Marcus Sears, Bobby Carpenter, Byron Jones, etc.). I haven't really seen a deliberate smoke screen from this team that I can recall.

It will be interesting to see if Jason & Co. were trying to create an artificial market for Mr. Ramsey's services, in the hopes that "their guy" would still be available at #4, or if they were simply being completely straightforward with their praise for the player that they really want at #4 (Jalen Ramsey).

It's pretty tough to say. The team's doing a good job of covering its tracks this year. They're usually a lot more transparent.

I don't think Ramsey requires an artificial market and the only way it's a smokescreen is the #3 pick. (unless the Rams/Eagles aren't actually looking QB which is doubtful)

No matter what happens, no smokescreen is required with this draft. At #4, there will be a tier 1 talent there in any of Ramsey, Elliot, and Tunsil. You take any other player at #4 and you're leaving value on the table.

Maybe JG knows that Jerry and Stephen are set on Ramsey, and he's trying to sabotage that by getting someone to trade ahead of them for him. And to Jerry and Stephen, it just looks like JG is being a team player, talking up their preferred guy.

No, I think he's just telling it like it is.

Journalist to Jason : So Jason...do you like the idea of Jalen Ramsey possibly becoming the next Dallas Cowboy this evening?

I'm in the camp that thinks Dallas will take Ramsey if he's there.

But just because someone gives high praise more than normal
1) does not mean they are required (or even planning) to draft the player
2) does not mean they are not telling the truth.

Unless they take Ramsey at #4 and then trade back into the first for Lynch. Then we were just overthinking it.

I doubt teams follow what the next team is doing to such an extent that it makes "smoke screens" worth the effort.

Every year we see responses to Jerrys comments about how he's putting up a smoke screen. Almost like it's only us fans who can see this while the rest of the league buys into the annual BS buffet that Jerry has opened.

You would think by now teams would disregard anything Jerry says as bogus, but apparently not.

I also think that if teams cared they wouldn't need the media comments to soundly estimate where a team is looking to go. They all have contacts and sources.

Jason calls a potential Top 5 pick an impact player, I don't think this is anything the rest of the league hasn't figured out. I'm sure every team would love to add Ramsey, but they also have to work with what is available and work within their roster.

And Gary Kubiak and Ron Rivera are brilliant?

Kubiak is a great offensive mind. Probably not as good as Garrett Mon-Saturday but destroys him from a X and O standpoint.

Well, Kubiak crashed and burned in Houston for a long time with a lot of talent.

And the Denver offense was putrid last year.

He had Peyton Manning, Brock Osweiler, and Matt Schaub, who was a hugely paid QB.

Schaub is garbage and he won a superbowl with the other.

Regardless.. I just saw an opportunity to take a cheap shot at Garrett for sucking and I really dont want to debate it today because i'm in draft mode.
