So did Greg Schiano, Bruce Coslett and a bunch of other scrubs, including Jim Garrett when he coached Columbia to it's impressive 0-10 record. Of course they weren't Commanders coaches, but you get my point.
Riddle me this Batman. Over the course of History name the 25 most successful coaches of all time. Then whether you think they were Policemen or Cupcakes.

The fact that other coaches have failed while being Policemen is completely irrelevant to the topic. Otherwise you need to look at how many Cupcakes have succeeded. We're talking about what is happening in Dallas and the fact that this Head Coach, according to a former player.

Once you look at the evidence, don't make it about your like or dislike for the Head Coach. What do you prefer in a Head Coach based on those results by your own study and definitions? A Policeman or a Cupcake?

Then, perhaps, I don't understand what you think it means. I am open to hearing your interpretation.

To me, it's micro-managing. I think that when Hatcher was talking about the head coach "policing", he was talking about it within the context of how some veteran players are/were being treated.

Just so you know, when Marty Schottenheimer was hired by the Skins, he tried micro-managing Darrell Green, to the point of actually showing Green the "proper" way to backpeddle lol:

During camp, Schottenheimer gave Green, who has been to seven Pro Bowls, remedial instruction on how to play the position....

[...]Schottenheimer said this week he regretted his treatment of Green and would do things differently if had the chance. Green has said that Schottenheimer was one of the reasons he announced his retirement. The recent improved relationship between coach and player has made Green's return more feasible.

Now, Schotty's micro-managing in this case was some on-the-field stuff. But imo, policing in a micro-managing style can overlap into other areas as well. I think that, when it comes to veterans, it makes sense to not only instill in them that this is their team and to take on leadership roles and be pro-active, but to also find ways to say "You've earned your stripes" and not treat them like a rookie who needs to be watched over 24-7.

No, no, no. I did that after the fact in response to you.

My post that you quoted was about the Cowboys coaches and no one else. You opened the door to a deeper discussion. I had no intention of bringing up Lombardi, Gibbs, or anyone else.

Perhaps not, but you did so anyway lol...so again, what's your definition of "policing"?

It's kind of funny. Hatcher has been known to make public comments that get people talking. I thought the trend would continue after he would start squawking to some DC area or national sports media person. Nah. I should have known. What was I thinking?

OK, I can understand that. I don't know if I can really see Garrett trying to micro-manage a defensive player. If it were a QB or WR, I might be more inclined to believe it, but what could he really be getting on Hatch (who has a great season) everyday about? I know he's not harping on him about specifics like your example with Green. I'm trying to think objectively about this, but the more I do the more I'm inclined to think, if anything, that Garrett wanted to hold a horrible defense accountable (rightly so!) and Hatch took offense somehow.

“Every coach has a different approach, but there’s a lot of things different here,” Hatcher said on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM]. “I don’t want to go into details about it because I don’t want to get blamed like, ‘Oh, he said this about Dallas…’

“They really take care of the veteran guys. They give us more say-so over the team. This is our team. The head coach don’t want to be policing the team. This is our team, so when we set the foundation for this football team, the way it’s supposed to go, that’s the way it’s supposed to go, through the players and not the coaches. It’s a players team, so whatever we say goes, pretty much, if it’s going in the right direction.”

we did that a couple of times. how did it work out? remember campo and wade....they were both coaches players and allowed veterans a lot of say. and of course the players like it, doing things their way.

Sean Payton is a micromanager. What's wrong with a head coach being a micromanager?

Well, I put a lot of "maybe's" in my initial post lol...meaning, I couldn't say for sure what Hatcher meant by "policing". And he specifically declined to go into any detail about what the Cowboys/Garrett did or did not do.

Right now, though, I don't have any reason to think Hatcher didn't want to be held accountable by anyone. As others have mentioned, he hasn't been exposed to Gruden's style of coaching for nearly enough time to be making any declarative statements, so it's most likely just a vibe he gets from Gruden as well as Gruden's own words on the subject, whatever they may be. Hell, Gruden could have said "I don't need to be policing the veterans like they're rookies", and that made Hatcher smile lol...

Next time on
The Hatcher Show

I walked into the boss' office and saw these two guys talking. I introduced myself to the tall guy.
"Hi. I'm Jason Hatcher, your new defensive tackle," and the tall guy replied,
"Hi, I'm Verne Troyer." Needless to say, I was embarrassed.

Right now, though, I don't have any reason to think Hatcher didn't want to be held accountable by anyone.

The only reason I can fathom is some inherit embarrassment in the way the defense preformed last year. I mean, if you are failing at something and your boss is consistently imploring you to be better, I can see where some frustration could occur.

That can be interpreted multiple ways. A radio station for example, will come to a player or personality and ask him to speak and agree upon a date and they then call in. That's all it could be saying.

Thats more than likely what happened but he seems to be matching Jerry in being available to the media lately. I'm just havin fun with it, happy for him and his success lookin forward to him coming back in 2015 at a cheaper price.

So what exactly DOES Garrett do in terms of "policing" the players on his team? Does anyone know?
