Ratliff was in the middle of a very team-friendly contract because when he signed it, he was looking for security and Dallas felt like if he developed, they would be getting a bargain. That was indeed the case and if I remember correctly, Ratliff started making noise about getting paid (new contract). Ultimately, Jerry gave it to him and this is the result. I personally believe Ratliff feels justified by the money he has taken from Dallas the last two years as money owed to him for past performances under a contract that he grew unhappy with as he became a key contributor.

Add to this Jerry probably suggesting to him he needs to get out on the field and play now that he is being paid like a stud...Ratliff being possibly bi-polar...and you have what is being brought to us today.

I dont understand how this is working exactly. According to the above ESPN link, he save $625k this year. There is 6.9M in dead money, but he was supposed to count 8.2. So are we savign 1.3M in next years cap too?

According to that, there is a 6M cap loss for cutting him this year. We dont have 6M... so it must be less due to the season being 1/3 of the way over?]

I too, am sorry this could not work out to restore Jay to his former bad self, but I really don't think he wanted to be here anymore, and that usually spells trouble in the locker room. I long ago soured on Jerry the GM, but you cannot have players making decisions for the team. Best to face facts and move on w/o him...

If the Cowboys were worried about the 2014 cap, they would have put him on IR and made him a June 1st cap hit next year.

So in effect....

Jerry signed Ratliff to a 5-year contract with $18 million guaranteed, and Ratliff never played a single down.

Stupendous job, Jerry!

This whole thing reminds me of Albert Haynesworth with the skins. Though we don't know the entire situation, it just spews the classic get paid then become a fat lazy chump; especially now the he failed his physical today. I loved Jay when he played, one of my favorite players three years ago. Now, I'm left with a bad taste in my mouth from him. Glad he's gone. Hopefully Jerry can file a grievance and get some of his money back.

A split that cost the Cowboys tons of cap space. He could have played and asked to be traded. Instead, he stuck to everyone involved.. The Cowboys, his teammates and the fans. No respect for someone who doesn't see anything wrong with cashing checks to sit on their couch.
Uhmm, wrong. lol

He was cut due to failed physical. He can't play. Read earlier today that his groin injury never healed.

I'm sure if it had healed, he'd be playing.

It's about time. Like TO, Ratliff was a cancer in the locker room. Maybe not stage 4 like TO, but definitely stage 2.

Makes me sad, but I might be on an island with that feeling..

nope i'm with you. he was a homegrown player that played great for many years amongst a sea of mediocrity. sad how this ended. angry b/c i've been pulling for him this whole time yet he could careless about the fans or the franchise.

Yea see i'm seeing conflicting opinions from fans on here talking about he simply didn't want to suit up and play for us. Ratliff was cut because of his injury correct?

And IMO, he was a guy that always came to play and gave 100%. He's what you want on your team. A roster full of guys who play to their potential or over it. I don't know how or why it went wrong with Ratliff. I never saw this coming.

That was the first thought that came to my mind. I actually thought it was going to workout this way.

As asinine as this contract extension was, and it redefines it, Ratliff played all of 2011 and 6 games last year under the deal.
