Twitter: Jay Ratliff released...Ending His 8-Year Run In Dallas

We don't know the details. When it happened, he was injured so you can't just cut him. Then came the legal issues with the DWI and we don't know what might have been the case there with the leagues policies on cutting player while in counseling. Plus, you have cap ramifications that must be considered. I don't know the whole story here but the point is that if he's injured, he probably won't be playing on our nickle with somebody else. If it's something else, then he may not be getting a lot of calls anyway.

That's the point.

Actually, you can just cut him. You have to pay out his salary until the end of the season (unless you can come to an injury settlement) and any guaranteed money owed, but you can just cut him.

The salary cap issues today are no different from what they would have been after we signed Romo.

we don't know all of the behind the scenes factors and details so it's hard to really take sides but man what an unfortunate situation and outcome

time to move on, i'm confident our FO and coaching staff have the talent evaluation skills to get the d-line back up to snuff in the coming seasons

Actually think about it. What do the Cowboys actually gain by putting him on IR?Prevent him from going to another team. They also appear vindictive to future free agents. What they gain is good will. You don't want to be here, so we understand. We are cutting you so you can look for employment elsewhere. No hard feelings and good luck. Ratliff comes off as a malcontent. Other teams are going to be cautious. Ratliff did far more damage to his own worth than he ever did to the cowboys. We will never hear about this, its going to be kept quiet.

I don't want to IR him unless his injury dictates it. If he's healthy, I want him to play in Dallas--where he's being paid. If he wanted out of Dallas so badly, why sign a new five-year deal? Why not ask for a trade? I don't buy for one second that if Jay Ratliff is healthy someone won't scoop him up.

I'm glad were saving a little money don't get me wrong. I just hate paying the next two years for someone who is not even here anymore.

Paying for players who aren't on the roster and therefore can't help the team win is a bad thing.

Spencer earned that contract - it certainly isn't his fault that he needed knee surgery nor was he a problem here like Ratliff was over the past year. He isn't stealing money anymore than any player on the IR is

I don't want to hijack this thread about the Rat. But, don't you think that if Spencer was working out hard during the offseason that he would have known way before that he needed surgery? You know, running some sprints, doing some leg exercises, testing out his legs, etc? I hope I never hear from him again. 10 plus million for being on IR is not the same as any other player,

Done...

I dont understand how this is working exactly. According to the above ESPN link, he save $625k this year. There is 6.9M in dead money, but he was supposed to count 8.2. So are we savign 1.3M in next years cap too?

According to that, there is a 6M cap loss for cutting him this year. We dont have 6M... so it must be less due to the season being 1/3 of the way over?]
The accelerated cap hit will occur in 2014 not 2013.

I am not sure of this. There are, I believe stipulations on such things. Besides, if you just cut him right then, then his entire cap hit comes under that year yeah?

Let me just say this again. If he's injured, then he likely won't be playing under our nickle. If it's something else, then he may not be getting a lot of other calls.

This was the actual point of the comment.

He has averaged 1 sack per season over the last two years and his body is clearly giving out. I'm not sure ANYBODY else would scoop him up considering that he is viewed as something of a head-case, the recent DUI, etc.

Wish I knew what all led to this. It hasn't seemed right since the start and it's only gotten worse as it's went along.

Something tells me were about to start the finger pointing stuff back and forth between Ratliff and the team.

*Shrugs* I am thankful for what he did when he was able to play and I definately wish that dominate player could have returned healthy. It simply wasn't meant to be and it was definately time for both parties to move on.

Robbie Ryan pass? Huh? RR was crucified around here and fired by the Joneses. How is that a "pass"?
During the season last year he was getting a lot of "he's doing it with just smoke and mirrors" and "guys of the street". The feces really only hit the fan after the last game.

Gee, everyone on the team seemed to suggest that Spencer was chomping at the bit to play. But what do his teammates know.

He was cut due to failed physical. He can't play. Read earlier today that his groin injury never healed.

I'm sure if it had healed, he'd be playing.
The question is why cut him instead of putting him on IR. It appears that they save abot 600k this year but take an extra 6.6M cap hit in 2014 vs IR with a June 1st cut which would only result in about 3M in 2014.

If it is something else, then Jerry sure has a strange approach.

Tell me, ABQ, when your dog poops on the rug, do you wait 10 months to rub his nose in it?

But he was set to cost us 8.2M. so we NET SAVED 1.3M against the cap.

i was just going by cost, not "savings". i'm not a capologist and usually when a player like this is released, the #'s tend to change/flux before anyone knows for sure. but $1.3mil MORE is a good thing. :)

You may be right, but I'd bet that if he's healthy, he'll be playing somewhere. Pacman Jones is still in the league.

Are you actualy implying that he needs microfracture surgery because he didn't work out hard enough in the offseason? Beyond the ramifications of the surgery and what causes it, it's not like he was absent at organized team activities or he didn't try and play through it.
