Bad comparison. Literally everything you just said proves my point on Secretariat. His breeding rights were bought before he made the jump to the big leagues, and he became a Triple Crown Champion. Im not saying Jaylon Smith is going to be the Secretariat of football because that would make him the best LB to play the game ever, im just saying, if the talent is there, you are damn right you invest even if there is a minute chance they can become Elite. If Jaylon becomes what he was in college for Dallas, we have a top 5 pick in this years draft.
well they invested, only time will tell if it was wise or not, but it will be awhile before they get a return on the investment.

"Yeah, it's regenerating," Smith said of his nerve in his left leg. "It's just a thing that you have to have patience. I'm going to continue to do everything I'm asked and controlling what I can control and we're going to take our time with it."

How does Smith know his nerve is regenerating in his leg? Is it because doctors have told him or is it something he's feeling now that he wasn't feeling before?

"Both. Doctors and tests all of that good stuff, feeling," Smith said. "There are things I didn't have before that I'm definitely getting now."

What's that regenerating sensation feel like?

"It feels like it's coming back," Smith said, smiling.

Smith said he's running a 4.5-second 40-yard dash now as most of his speed has returned. He also said his change-of-direction sprinting has been positive.

Smith even says he believes he could have played for the Cowboys in the playoffs.

"I think I could have played and competed at an elite level," Smith said, "but with us coming together and realizing the situation with the nerve coming back, we're going to be patient and trust God's timing."

The focus now for Smith is to improve his motor function, with his body needing to catch up to his nerve starting to fire so that it works in near unison. Right now, Smith's reaction is behind his nerve.

"He's made tremendous progress," Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Thursday. "It doesn't surprise us one bit."

According to this the nerve is re-enervating.

When you run you do not keep your foot level like that. It dips and comes back up. I agree taht with constrained motion it is unlikely he would return to his previous form.

Who says he is still wearing the cast though?
I'm almost positive there were videos posted last week or two weeks ago of him without the brace. He was heavily taped during the drills, but without the brace running and cutting.

It has fired already. You and many others are going to be in for a big surprise. Brace or no brace.
Do you have some inside info?

Nothing on twitter or in the media indicates that the nerve has "fired".

I'm not trying to be a arse because you might actually have inside info. I'm sure there is more info than has been reported or tweeted.

Thanks. I was going to go looking for this again. He's come out and said it's regenerating. That's good enough for me.

Now, the question is how good a pro can he be given the injury, the normal rookie transition, and the time off. Let's hope he's good enough that the wasted defensive resource for last year was worth it. I hate to think that one more defender with some ability could have been the difference in that GB game.

No one has said the nerve has refired. The only word used is regenerate. They are two different things. If the nerve had fully regenerated and begun firing, he wouldn't be wearing the brace. He would be in physical therapy teaching his leg to work properly again. I am not going to be surprised one way or the other. I hope he fully recovers and becomes the best player he can be but I'm also prepared for him to never play a single down in the NFL. The only thing that will really surprise me is if he can play at an above average level while still wearing the brace and having drop foot.

He's made a lot of progress. It's only February. He will make more progress by May. Even more by July. And even more by September.

Hopefully with another 7 months, the brace will be gone and he can become the player we all hope he can be. If he still has the brace by opening day, he will have it his entire career. And the ceiling in that case is that he is an average player who can contribute here and there.

Another concern: opponents will go after that knee when he is playing. He will need to be ready for that.
There is nothing in his knee for people to go after. It's structurally sound.

Regenerating is not the same as refiring. The nerve could fully regenerate to the correct spot and still never fire. The keyword to his whole recovery is "refire". The nerve should have been regenerating all along. In fact, he is about 5-6 months past the initial timeframe for the nerve to have fully regenerated. He is behind schedule which means there is a chance the nerve never fires.

No....If you read the report from Dr. Cooper, he said that it would take anywhere from 9-15 months to recover.

a nerve that regenerates will generally fire
the bigger concern is a nerve not regenerating
remember how they talked about how fast the nerve would regrow?
sounds like everything is going fine

The man himself has said it's firing. Jerry has said it's firing.

Some members of the media say otherwise. This is a medical issue, unless they are talking to his doctor which is illegal...how would they know?

Only a select number of people know the truth. Jaylon, his family, the doctor and probably Jerry. Two of those people are saying it's firing...does the doctor have to make a press conference or do you only trust it from Schefter rob Rappaport?

:hammer:
....yeah, we all know better than anyone else....only on the internet this happens....well actually I know someone in real life that knows it all and has done it all, just ask him, he will tell you...
He works for a commercial company, but yet somehow they do military missions where he is in charge, but he can't talk about it....his job is crew chief in the baggage department for an airline company.....

And it would be very hard to tell even for a real doctor from a short video. And if someone claims they can tell a lot from that, I would question it still. Take nothing away from what they do in real life and can actually study the person though. However, their opinions will be good to read.

Anyway, I hope Jaylon has a great off season and we shall see in TC if not before. But this is great progress from where he was a year ago.
General practice Doctors tend to be terrible at answering these kinds of questions. There are Doctors that put out terrible information on the internet.

I actually prefer somebody like @FuzzyLumpkins analysis over nonsense that some Doctors put out on the internet or even a couple of general practice guys that I know who are Cowboys fans.

In casual conversation, Doctors rarely admit they don't know something. They prefer to just give out BS answers because they think all non-Doctors will automatically believe them.

No, they didn't really say it is firing. They made odd statements that could be intrepreted as saying that but they didn't directly say it unless it's happen in the past few days.

He meant fully recover and be able to play. He said the 6 inches of damaged nerve should regrow 1 inch a month and could fire anytime after that. It's been well past the 6 months and it's still just regenerating which is the same as regrowing. That process should have been done many months ago. Once it refires, he still has months of rehab and physical therapy to go. It's not going to refire one day and the next day he is 100% ready to go without the brace. There is no disputing that he is way behind the best case scenario for his recovery and it is still very much in doubt if he ever fully recovers.

No they have not. They have all used the word regenerating. That is not the same as refiring.

Regening, reinervating, firing, etc confuses some in terms of what they actually mean. Myself, I am in the camp of the nerve is trying to fire now; hence, the sensations Smith says he feels.

That does not mean that it will be a full recovery though, it can continue to fire yet not make a full connection or a number of other problems can occur.

Even when this does happen, PT will follow as you stated. When training camp rolls around and he still has to wear the brace....I will be really concerned about his future in the NFL.

This thread is created to discuss the recent twitter video recently posted. It shows Jaylon running a drill which shows his change of direction.

This video, together with his sprint video also posted recently are a good sign. He does not appear to have any real limitations but according to the article posting the video things are alleged to still not be 100 percent.

To the doctors on this forum, what is your analysis of this video. To those of you who want to complain about discussing this issue do us all a favor and don't post here to complain about this discussion. Go ***** about it in the rant zone.

AGILITY!!!!!

Excellent, blokes! I wonder if he can stop 180-pound NFL running backs.
