Isn't firing and regenerating the same thing? He said he's getting feeling back. If a nerve is firing, then it's getting feeling back. Hence, it's firing. Unless there's some different meaning between firing and regenerating.

No. The nerve has two main functions: sensory and motor control. Regeneration just means the nerve is regrowing from where it was injured all the way to the extremity.

In order for the nerve to fire it has to regenerate to the muscle and then recreate the linkage to the muscle. That latter process is call innervation.

Feeling and motor control are two different biomechanical processes. They understand the former and major study is underway on the latter.

That's what I figured you were referencing.

He didn't say that it's firing. He said it's regenerating because the Doctor's say so and he feels stuff.

He said he would need the brace to play.

The writer mentioned something about it firing but Jaylon didn't really say that.

If it was really firing, all of the local sports media would jump on the story.

I linked a report in post 63 saying that the issue now was getting his reaction in sync with this nerve firing. You cannot sync a nonexistent signal.

If the nerve is firing, so to speak, would there be a reason why the front office would be cryptic in updating the media? Does it benefit them withholding information? Honest question btw

The nerve is not dead, so there are electrical impulses (firing).
The question is whether the impulses are getting where it needs to in the various muscles and with enough nerve conduction.
Then the question is are the muscles rehabbed.
It is really hard to know exactly where he is at.
Though it does seem there is some connection, or there is no improvement...

You've never seen an offensive lineman or a running back block before the waist before?
If an offensive lineman is blocking below the waist it's likely a penalty. RBs go low because they are likely to get trucked and any blitzing LB is aware of that.

I don't know how any of that is considered "going at the knee" of a LB especially one who has no structural damage to his knee.

Anyways.

well how much did he make in 2016 as 2nd round pick?
it is to his benefit to be ultra positive, big money involved.
And he may be rkg and trying hard, staying in best shape he can and studying playbook etc.
That is all good, just better to not have high expectations for him in 2017.

I completely agree with this. But, there's one problem with your dose of reality. The problem is that I've already let my hopes and expectations run a muck. I understand the odds and the math involved in him ever becoming what he could have been before the injury. However, once you factor in my unsubstantiated optimism into the equation...well...he should make the probowl every year he plays beginning in 2017. Not factoring in my unbridled and unsupported enthusiasm is a mistake on your part. It counts...because.

I'm only kind of joking.

Firing would mean the nerve is activating the muscle movement.

Regenerating just means that it's healing. They can do imaging tests to see the healing to some extent. Also, he may have sensation that he did not have previously but that does not mean the nerve is activating the muscle.

"I think I could have played and competed at an elite level," Smith said, "but with us coming together and realizing the situation with the nerve coming back, we're going to be patient and trust God's timing."

The focus now for Smith is to improve his motor function, with his body needing to catch up to his nerve starting to fire so that it works in near unison. Right now, Smith's reaction is behind his nerve.

"He's made tremendous progress," Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Thursday. "It doesn't surprise us one bit."
This is the unfortunate part where the not Jaylon, not the Doctors and not the Cowboys, but the reporter says that the nerve is starting to fire.

To everyone here, note the lack of quotations marks on the sentence in bold.

He looks like he is about 90%. The anterior sculpa doesn't look fully healed and there seems to be a little looseness in the tinko ligament. I would say he is on target. Your welcome.

Nevermind that players that do bush league tactics like that end up targets.

The reporter is reporting that the nerve is firing. I have seen nothing to contradict that and you do not need a quote to report something.

You think he just made up his nerve and reaction time needing to be synced?

Can he take on a blocker and have complete use of power and balance. If not then he can't play. Its as simple as that. And I hope he doesn't try to play to try and please Jerry and the fans. If he has to sit another year oh well. He's a long term project to me since the moment we drafted him.

The 1st video was put on youtube over two months ago. The part of the video starting at 0:17 is in an unknown location. This outside portion of this video was posted here at CZ during the season and somebody originally said that part might be at training camp. I can't find the original thread. I don't know if the outside video is at the Cowboys practice facility (mini-Jerry World) or if it was at a training camp. Either way, it was posted on youtube over 2 months ago.

The 2nd and 3rd video were recent..

Much like many fans, I'm not sure the reporter understands the issue. If he does not understand it, then what he said could easily be completely wrong.

If the nerve was "firing" and causing the muscle to move, other reporters would be on the story. Local Sport Talk radio would definitely get the story. The Fan, 105.3 talks about this issue often and they have great access to the Cowboys because they are the Cowboy Flagship station. Broaddus, Mickey, Fisher, etc. all work with them.

If the nerve is "firing" it would not just be in one obscure report by Brandon George who is barely a blip on the radar of Dallas sports reporting.

Well that is ok, but a bigger let down for you later on if he doesnt pan out.
I am going to not expect much, then if he starts playing and playing great, I can still enjoy that.
