He didn't happen to say, "Oh yeah, and that nerve started firing this morning, just as if nothing ever happened to it," did he? Hoping that maybe he did and you just forgot to mention it.

i thought the nerve has already began firing, Jaylon said he feels new sensations every day. thought that's what i heard.

I believe tingling is a sign the nerve is regenerating but until the 6 inches of damage are fully regenerated he doesn't having feeling in his foot.

So what happens after the nerve comes back? Can he just jump in and start playing or does he have any additional rehab for his knee?

Nothing groundbreaking. A bunch of 'really excited to be here' and 'really driven to get back on the field'. Acknowledged Lee as the guy he's following- both because he's a heck of a player and a smart football guy, as well as the fact that Lee has been through similar setbacks.. Said he has a lot support from Lee and other teammates.

Sounds good... One thing that has bothered me since we drafted Smith, is that I've heard numerous people compare him to Sean Lee, except they would say that if healthy he's much better than Lee, and I just find that hard to stomach, given the fact that Sean lee is already a stud in the NFL.. I just hope we see the day where Smith and Lee play together...

He said his knee is fine. It's just the nerve and when it heals. It could be this year; it could be next year (he said in so many words).

Some of the armchair "doctors" on here said he would be ready in July. Doesn't sound very optimistic. He can't lift his foot.

I hope it's true, ****. Can you imagine? Sean Lee is already an All-Pro caliber linebacker.

Imagine having two Sean Lees.

I don't think there is one person here who said that.

I have to concur. I've been here throughout the J. Smith discussion and read damn near everyone of those threads. I don't recall a single comment along those lines. Not a one. On its face the statement itself is simply fantastical. I don't even think its humanly possible to come back in 6 months from an MCL and ACL injury. Anyone who made such a statement would lose all credibility as soon as they pressed 'Enter'.

People did opine, especially after JJ said that they wouldn't put him on IR and hoped to have him back for the playoffs, that perhaps, perhaps he could see action late in the year. But Nov and Dec is a far cry from "ready in July".

I don't think there is one person here who said that.

Here are the key facts as I see them:

1) The ACL and PCL repair was a success. This is demonstrated by his return to athletic activities. The only concern at this point is the peroneal nerve.
2) According to his doctor the nerve was stretched and not elongated with no significant damage to the nerve exterior.
3) The best outcome is a grade 2 injury which indicates complete nerve regeneration and a full recovery.
4) The worst outcome is scar tissue forms inside the nerve causing a partial recovery. There are further surgical solutions if this is the case.
5) Smith is 16 weeks or 3.5 months postop and is regaining sensation in foot indicating regeneration is ongoing.
6) The nerve recovery timeframe is around 6 months due to the length of injured nerve. He could well be recovered by July.
6) Modern MRI techniques can see the development of scar tissue and abnormalities. This implies his doctors can tell if it is a grade 2 or 3 injury at this point based on whether or not scars are forming.

Recap (paraphrased):

Q: who do you follow down there? we hear you shadow Sean Lee.
A: Sean Lee yes. He is a great guy, disciplined. Loves football.

Q: moment of injury - what goes through your mind
A: timing of when it happened worst possible time. but desire to improve, and deal with the hand I've been dealt.

Q: nerve damage - did that change your perspective?
A: its different, nerves heal on their own, no predicting time frame. Uncertainty. I have faith in God. I'll be 100%.

Q: some teams were going to take you off their boards. what did you think about that?
A: at combine people were concerned about me maybe limping around, but that wasn't the case at all. The knee was fine. Dr Cooper knows better than anyone.

Q: Phone rings, Jerry Jones. Describe emotions.
A: Perfect place for me to end up. With brother. I was home with family, it will be a great opportunity.

Q: Reports we hear was you won’t go on IR. Maybe ready for playoffs. What have you been told?
A: my expectation is to be healthy and play well. Whether this year or next year, I have no doubt.

Q: how much does this drive you to be the player you were at Notre Dame?
A: there’s so much time to improve, so use it to work hard, get body back, learn playbook.

Q: you never got hurt in college, so now what’s the mental side of not being able to play?
A: speed of game will need to be learned, understand concepts of playbook, Sean Lee and others provide great support system for things like this.

Q: you had spotlight of Notre Dame. How much has that helped you get ready for Cowboys?
A: Dallas Cowboys world famous like Notre Dame, so I’m accustomed to it. It’s the game I love, so it will be fine.

Host Comment: he is as driven a person as you will find.

The nerve can come on in 6 months, but there are no guarantees; the continued knee rehab could be longer. No one has really gone on record what his knee rehab schedule is, just that he's ahead of schedule.
