Until he puts on the pads, starts practicing and looks good, I'm not going to get all worked up over him. With all the nerve firing threads and other topics that have been started on him, it could all lead to a huge disappointment if he can't play or get back to a high level. I'm not going to fall into the trap of counting on Smith until he shows on the field he's back.
I'd be disappointed if you ever said something postive.

I hope he is the stud we drafted him to be. But in no way do we need to go do what the Giants did in FA to fix this defense. That would be just as foolish for us and it was for them. I know they are going to the SB this year... oh wait..

Well one thing I can say with certainty is if the Giants go draft another Ezekiel Elliott and Dak Prescott in the same draft we are in some serious trouble.

If he's continuing to have to rehab all the way to camp after a full year off rehabbing, that's not going to be a good sign. His rookie season was already thrown away so if he's not ready to fully participate in training camp, chances are he's going to end up being another wasted second round pick. He can't just be spending his first few seasons rehabbing, he has to start playing. If anyone wonders why the defense is lagging behind our offense, it's taking chances on pot heads and injured players instead of making smart, safe picks like we've done in the first round.

Why does he have to fully participate in training camp? Are you worried about his conditioning...have you taken a look at this guy? This is strictly about his peroneal nerve and it being fully regenerated. I'm not going to pretend I know about nerve regeneration, but I would give it all the time it needs. If he's 100% by training camp...great. If not, wait until the preseason games and work him into those practices. He's not going to be a wasted pick...that's just negative thinking.

What the Giants did this year has no bearing on what we should or shouldn't do.

We have an elite offensive line, an elite running back, and a stud young QB. Of course we need to build the defense.

For what it is worth, he said he is getting his 4.4 speed back.
He said 4.5 before, hopefully this is progress and not semantics.
Lets hope this is not PR BS so fans would stop clamoring for FA additions.

in another article by Archer:
I saw Smith run late in the season as he went through drills with fellow rookie Charles Tapper. He went through pass-rush and change-of-direction drills, all while wearing the brace on his foot. Without the tape job, you wouldn’t know he could not lift his foot.

WE STILL NEED PREFERABLY 2 PREMIER FA DLs, preferably 1 DT and 1 DE.
Couple that with a Premier FA CB and we are in business.
This is pretty much the same rebuild as what the Giants did in 2016 in terms of player positions and cost.
I think everyone who is hoping the Cowboys are major players in free agency,or are after premier free agents, are going to be very disappointed. I believe they're looking primarily at the draft,or a bargain free agent

Don't be silly. He never had that.

He didn't ever have 4.4 speed either. That was kind of my point. 4.5 maybe*.

Every time he tweets about this he references faster times.

*He didn't run at the combine and I'm dubious about his alleged 4.44.

If he can't fully participate in training camp after a year removed from that injury with all the rehabbing he's done, than he can't possibly be progressing very well. He can't be wasting the early part of his career waiting for a nerve to regenerate. We need players on the football field practicing to to help this defense, not spending a second summer rehabbing a college injury that caused them to free fall in the 2016 draft. If he's not 100% by training camp and can't fully participate I doubt we'll play him in preseason games.

I'm not saying he's going to be a wasted pick but so far he has been. Had we not thrown away a second round pick on Gregory and made a smart defensive selection with that pick and drafted a healthy defensive player with our high second pick this past April it might have helped us get by Green Bay last Sunday. We have no idea at this point if Smith is going to get back to the level he was.

He suffered a very serious injury that involved nerve damage which caused teams to pass him up in the draft which shows the risk the Cowboys took. It's taking gambles on defensive players that's been part of the reason our defense continues to lag behind our offense. Just look at all the pro bowlers we've had the past 10 years on offense, compared to the defense.

They aren't because their offense is a complete steaming pile. I'm not advocating a 200M bender, but let's be honest, if we had the Giants defense the Super Bowl would be a pretty good bet.

Yeah, I can just see Jerry and Stephen now..."We've got to put some fake news stories out there so people on message boards will stop clamoring for free agents."

It's not just the players though. We've had talent on D before too. But they have a better, younger co-ordinator in Steve Spagunola which helps their D immensely. We kind of know what Marinelli can do, and his reluctance on adding talent to the D-line is starting to annoy me. I've had enough of the orphans. His elite defences in Tampa and Chicago had many pro-bowl players, not no names.

We've never had that kind of top to bottom talent since the 90s, when we won the Super Bowl!

If he is not practicing when training camp starts in 2017, then there is a problem. That would 1-1/2 years since the injury.

Having said that, there are some indications that players have played with the brace that he is wearing before the nerve regenerated. I don't recall the player's name or the details, but some people seem to think it's possible.

Is he going to play next season? He is still wearing the brace.

To be honest, that is starting to bother me too.
He is clearly behind some of the cases I have seen, but not behind so bad that it seems something is definitely wrong.
Also if surgery intervention is needed, it would have been done by now.

There are different degrees of recovery, and it just be more rehab is needed.
So it is possible his recovery is not that good or not that complete.
No one knows except probably the doctors who are not talking.

The interesting thing is that Archer said:
1. he watched Jaylon in pass rush drills and change of direction drills beyond straight ahead running.
2. he said Jaylon was performing like new even with the brace.

I dont know if that is some type of PR move to prepare us for Jaylon playing with a brace.
Or it is just that more rehab is needed.
At this point, the possibility that Jaylon requiring a brace to play has definitely crossed my mind.
If that is the case, Archer's report about his performance would be quite important.
More patience is needed, oh well.
