There are multiple salary cap threats that discusses how $30 million in space can easily be created. Actually $50 million can be created if desired.
It's not about can it be done. It's about the teams philosophy of building through the draft and keeping the great players, drafting replacements for the rest

We did a great job of building the foundation through the draft.
That had to be done.
We are now ready to take the next step and it requires a different philosophy to 'close the deal'.

It would be silly to waste years of our window for drafting the DL.
91 cowboys added Haley and came the Superbowl.
It is not easy to get a Haley, so 2 top tier FA DLs should be added - just like the Giants did.

There's some urgency to get him on the field in 2017 after missing the entire 2016 season. Every year is precious in a football players career and you can't just be waiting around year after year for a nerve to regenerate. Everyone figured he would miss his rookie season but after a full year we need to start seeing some real progress with him this off-season. If he's not ready to go by training camp a lot of doubts are going to start creeping in.

You'll probably get your wish regardless...brace or no brace. I believe Jerry said he was in great shape and could have played in the GB game, but they decided to just redshirt him etc. So, that tells me his knee is definitely 100% at this point and only the nerve is the holdup. Frankly, I'm just not that worried about him being ready to play in September. I just don't want to see any setbacks in a game that doesn't count. I keep thinking about what happened to Lee and Scandrick in training camp before. I don't want to bubble wrap him until September, but I have no problem limiting him during training camp.

The issue is if the worthwhile players become available at RDE, DT and CB/S.

That is the big question. Big ticket free agents are simply something that our front office doesn't really want to spend on.

However, if they do go with an expensive FA, he will have to be young enough to finish out his contract, and he will have to be a sterling character player that is self motivated and loves football.

That is a difficult combo to find. Teams almost never let those guys see UR FA. Guys like Berry, Chandler Jones... they will likely be resigned or franchised. Just like no one had a shot at Dez... those guys aren't going to happen very often.

I'd love to get one in Dallas but it is very unlikely.

The nerve would not get worse from playing so that is not a concern.
I suspect he could have played in the playoffs but his condition adds more risk to getting injured.
So they gave him another 7 months to get as recovered as he can.
By July, the marginal improvement of additional time is probably pretty small.
So we should have a good idea by minicamp.

It does sound like they are telling people that he can play well even with the brace.
Not sure if that is PR preparation for an incomplete recovery.
But if he can play well with the brace, then no one would care.

Jerry says a lot of things I'll believe it when I see Smith on the field practicing football.

Less twitter, actual playing time, and more nerve firing. Then I'll believe.

Did any of you see him run the 3 cone drill? No question after watching him run that, that he will be ready for OTA's. Some of you naysayers are really pessimistic right from day 1 when we drafted him. Some of you thought you knew more than the Dr that performed the surgery on his knee. Cmon Man really!!!

The amazing thing is that he ran it with the brace on - though some said they could tell his left leg had some issue?
So if he cannot fully get function back, then there is hope that he can do it.

No kidding. Can we stop making threads about stuff Jaylon Smith says?

Because theres so much else to talk about now. Im pretty sure weve covered our failure to beat GB and the refs treason. Its a tad to early to get any realistic FA talk going and theres a seperate board for draft talk. If yall hate the Jaylon Smith threads so much stay off of them.

if a deal makes sense JJONES may pull the trigger, who knows. The new philosophy of money control does not indicate this is likely

We understood the first time you said it. Saying it over and over, in the same thread no less, isn't going to make us understand any more.

Anyone looking at the cap would know that we can easily clear 30-50Mil.
Lets hope Stephen is in favor of getting his father 1-2 superbowls.
Or Jerry sets his foot down.
