Yes I think he deserves his own thread.

Shouldn't be on the field. I understand that its injuries that put him in this position but even then I think there were plenty of LBers available that could do a more serviceable job.

He is a liability in pass and run defense, he gets taken out of the play easily, is always a step slow and is not physical at all.

Maybe he can turn it around as he grows but I can't wait until Hitchens and Lee are back and IMO we relied too heavily on this guy being a factor. Big mistake.

I don't know what his position is. I think they're figuring it out as they go bc they've invested so many resources in the front 7 and they essentially use a first rounder on him. Mine as well let him work the kinks out by he was definitely playing catchup all day

We don't have any choice due to the offseason plan. Going in with Hitch, Wilson and Lee was not a plan. They picked up Durant late out of desperation.

He has been forced into too many snaps too soon .
Makes tackles, but they are all 7 yards beyond the LOS.
doesn't fill holes in the run game.
Take a too many false steps

I have hope for him but it's frustrating to watch. I remember a guy in college that played as fast as a wr and was smooth as heck. It's just not there right now .

I've said this for four weeks, and I've been chastised every time. He's been a huge liability all season... Having said that, today was his best of the four games.

Not trying to be rude but you most likely lack the qualifications to make these comments about Jaylon Smith. You don’t know his assignments on any play and are basing your assumptions on highlight reels or Madden level expertise...

You could even be right...but most likely not because you have the knowledge of NFL MLBers play in our defensive scheme...

These young players need more time before I’m convinced one way or another, but Jaylon looks really bad out there more than I like. Probably should have gone Jack.
Jack averaged less than a tackle per game his first season and could barely get on the field.
Jack only has 17 tackles this year.

It looked like extremely few run blitzes called all game. It was insane. LB's backpedaling so much... They missed Lee's playcalling just as much as they missed his physical presence.
And Marinelli didn't help them by not demanding run blitzes more often.

But, to call a spade a spade- someone else said if the play is coming to Jay, he's great. If he has to make a quick cut, or chase from a difficult angle, he's not going to be able to do it.

Hitchens and especially Lee cannot come back soon enough.

Rams scheme was able to isolate and pick on the LB'rs in the game repeatedly.......Post to Gurley, big 1st down to Kupp over Jaylon, sideline pass long run to Gurley...........

Rod M. had no Answer......couldnt go 3 man front due to Gurley run yardage adding up

I remember all the hate on Lee for being soft.

I remember all the hate one Hitchens for you name it.

Now it's Jaylon Smith.

Has he been great? No. Has he been asked to attack the ball and use his athleticism? No. Has the coaching staff given him simple assignments such as blitzing? Nope.

He will get better, but the coaching staff also need to use him better. He was an attacking downhill linebacker in college and they're asking him to play on his heels. What do you expect?

As far as people expecting him to do what Lee does, he's not playing the weak side. He doesn't have the free run to shoot gaps like Lee does, he's tasked with a gap and usually has to take on a blocker.

It may be true. But judging defenders, especially in the secondary or LB position by fans is so very hard. Not something I am qualified to do. I don’t know which CB or safety blew his assignment or if Jaylon is supposed to play back and not crash the line. So to come out and say someone needs to be off the field and they aren’t ready isn’t something I feel most fans can say. Let’s be honest, we don’t really know..we can barely track the ball when watching a game on tv..
