This is interesting. I haven't looked very deep into this but did he have less production than Sean McKeon in college at michigan in the same role? McKeon caught 60 passes for 668 yards and 6 touchdowns.
College production doesn’t matter.

If it mattered everyone would’ve taken Mayer.

Everyone romanticizes about wanting football players over athletes but that’s not the reality of the NFL.

The NFL wants the players with the most upside in the draft. Especially through the first 2 days.

Schoonmaker is a great blocker and his athleticism is off the charts which indicates he has upside that the NFL thinks it can develop.

Jeff has spent a lot of time in getting better at this scouting stuff but it's still in its infancy compared to people who have learned the hard lessons.

Various:
Schoon may be a total bust but he is an athletic profile significantly better than ANY TE on the roster and in the top 1% of ALL TEs.
If you go back to Travis Kelce he had 1 year of collegiate production at Cincy.
But he had these insane measurables.
The modern TE is a measurables guy.
A match up nightmare.
And we can talk about lack of production, but he has the best blocking tape of any TE in the class.
Watching him absolutely crush Jack Campbell tells me all I need to know in that arena.

Yep, this is the problem using stats without any analysis. Was McKeon a better option than Jarwin and/or Schultz, you'd hoped he was given a chance was he ever invited to Dak's Yard.

I don’t agree with the EPA comment regarding run defense. Not the stat but the conclusion. We’ve got some ballers making plays on the d-line, but it was clear as day 1Tech play was lacking and needed to be addressed. A big part of that helps just the run but above that Micah was winning time and again off the edge and there was simply too much space for the QB to step up into the pocket. It hurt his numbers hugely IMO.

I agree with the Left Guard stuff though. I can only assume they didn’t rate Torrence all that highly or they plan to address it in FA because to my thinking that’s the biggest issue this team faces.
This
Cavanaugh falls into the problem that he starts with a bias and then takes ‘mean’ stats to justify his own thinking as if Quinn didn’t have access to them. This is like many other posters or analysts who don’t understand the true impact of an effective run game. The reason SF and Philly are great defences is because they can collapse the pocket, rush the passer and stop the run with their front 4, now you free up a lot on the backend to be creative. Having the similar mean stats for the run game while having to play an extra player in the box or having to blitz a lot might not show up in run defense stats but will affect the defense

Mazi helps us in a lot of aspects

The reality is Jeff understand the modern era of football and a lot of you are still playing catch up.

That’s why you want Nose Tackles, Middle Linebackers and Fullbacks so bad.

The NFL is all about explosive plays.

The goal is to have players that create explosive plays and stop explosive plays from happening.

If Mazi Smith is a 2 down player then the pick was a massive reach. Sorry..

I think Yes he worked out at Dak's humble home. They must be releasing mckeon after camp.

Crazy im watchin this right now. His analysis of schoonbummer is spot on
I always get the feeling Cavanaugh is on a lot of drugs for mental health or whatever. (he talks about therapy and medication so..I get it)..Clearly a "Beta-male" but I hope he is OK because I actually think sometimes he is very insightful. He also seems afraid to take a true position on anything. He spouts stuff and ends up all over the place. When he does take a position, he always says "Well I've been wrong a lot". Anyone can say that about anything...
Cavanaugh thought that Jared Goff was going to be better than Tom Brady...

Some of that is true and some of that is not.

If College Production does not matter what in the hell did Deuce Vaughn get drafted on? Pretty sure his ability to perform at a high level (AKA Production) shows he can play football at the nfl level.

People miss in the draft constantly taking traits and upside. if they didn't Brian Bozworth, Ryan Leaf, Alexander Wright and Mike Mamula would have their own wing in the hall of fame.

I think it is better said that the NFL wants players who have produced and have traits and athleticism that offers potential to become all pro level players. Time and Time again lots of players in the nfl are good blue collar players who produced in college.

Deuce Vaughn went in the 6th round.

Day 3 is where the guys that the NFL thinks
Don’t have the best physical ability but are good football players start going.

Like I said.. First 2 days is for the best athletes for the most part.

But if Michigan ran 60% of the time....those 500 (600) yards are not indicative of ability it's that is wasnt utilized. The stat about him having the second highest slant receptions (behind Bowers) indicates that the limitations are potentially due to the scheme.

Lets be fair Cavanaugh loves small slot receivers and I bet his judgement is based on preferring that style of player.....its the problem of picking pet cats and not having the benefit of understanding (or having to pick for specific schemes). Im sure he'd play 4 man WR with two small slot's on most downs.
All you need to know about Cavanaugh is that he would have drafted Davonte Smith over Parsons and had Tolbert as our highest graded draft choice last draft. I love Cavanaugh and listen to him as much as I can he does not understand how important a powerful defensive tackle is to a defense.

You said production does not matter. Yes the late rounds are for traits, criminals and health risks. I am well aware.

2nd round seems high to draft on projection without some display of production.

anyway, he will be all pro will mcclay drafted him.

Jeff and you apparently ‘understand modern era football’ better than McCarthy, McClay and Quinn and every other competent DC who when interviewed say: our number 1 priority is to stop the run game

Your comment represents a fundamental misunderstanding of football but I’m not surprised by your comment, it is wrong but not surprising

This from the guy who told us Garrett is a great HC despite a decade of failure

This from the guy who told us teams would be lining up to sign Garrett as HC if we fired him

This from the guy who told us Garrett would be a great OC for the Giants

They knowlingly took a 2 down player with their first pick in hopes he can develop into a 3 down player because his athleticism is off the chart.

They want bigtime athletes with premium picks more than anything.

This idea that 40 times and workouts don’t matter is just some wishful thinking by fans.

It sounds cool to compare them to me but compare them to the teams winning championships.

Look at the amount of explosive plays..

Playing football like the Browns and Titans ain’t it but fans romanticize about football being played like it’s 1995.

“Teams winning championships” like KC, Philly, LA” and other teams who have been in CCGs like SF and Bills who all prioritize DT play?

Perhaps you should take your own advice and look at them LOL

You can prioritize DT play. That’s fine.

You just don’t draft run stuffers with premium picks.

Mazi being more than a run stuffer is nothing but a projection.

His athleticism points to him being able to do it but if all you end up with is a 2 down player then you made a bad pick.

You don’t need to spend premium picks to stop the run.

The best run defense is scoring points anyways.

Schoonmaker is the perfect compliment to the other three guys we already have. The fans need to follow the money. Dak’s passes will be going to CeeDee, Gallup, Cooks and Pollard. Schoonmaker’s job is to block and be a threat when the football is thrown his way. Imagine if the Cowboys drafted Washington with 2nd round pick, that is what they want from Schoonmaker.
