Interesting. Bates shoes, in that regard, are hard to fill. Bates was a slow study, yes, but turned out to be a great Cowboy.

Bates only came in on defense when they went with a 6 DB heavy sets. Woody and Gant played a lot more. Heath can play the Gant role on defense but does not have the PR. Bates made a fair amount of plays in limited time too but Heath is already on a better pace.

We shouldn't be talking Jones or Heath but Jones and Heath. I prefer Heath over Church or Wilcox to start with Jones.
Jones has better man skills but Heath is better at playing the center fielder.

I was the only guy in Heaths corner before his sudden fandom on here but Even I would rather he not start. He's a sp teams ace who should come in on dime packages. I'd still sign TJ McDonald to start with Byron.

He's been showing up as of late, so I'd bring him back.

I agree with Sydla - Jeff Heath played the best game of his life last Sunday. That being said, you don't want to make any personnel decisions based off of one game, whether a player played their best game or their worst.

Either way, Heath has always been a valuable contributor to the team. He's good on special teams, and can contribute at safety. Not sure that he's starting material, though. I have no problem with him competing for a starting role, but there needs to be competition.

Haha, man. There used to be only a handful of us Heath fans.

Athleticism and toughness was never the problem. Guy is probably one of the most athletic dudes on the team. And from his mixing it up on ST, and a moment I'll never forget, is him breaking up the Hardy/whoever argument, he was the guy that got in the middle of it.

It's interesting with him and Church. Heath is only turning 26 this May. He's really just now getting into his prime years. I honestly have no idea what the plan is going forward, but depending on what they do this offseason, it'd tell us a lot about what they think of his development.

It seems that Heath had been represented as a slow but smart, tough, "overachiever"
but he just exploded on the screen during last game. now he is athletic, slow to mature, potential starter?
wow! but i am excited that my expectations for him are changing. depending on what safeties we sign, we can decrease the need by one.

Played a great game, and almost won it twice ( sack, overturned int) plus he had another int preventing a long gainer.

Also, just saw he was being trained as backup kicker due to Dan Bailey disk problem.

Guy has some wheels 4.3 best, and is 6' 1" and 212 lbs...

Also recall he is a hitter.....

Idea ... Move Jones back to CB, and give Jeff a try at Safety

Reactions welcomed.....

He'd be my starting safety next to Eric Berry. 2 big hitters. 2 ballhawks.

Try Jones at CB. The safety project is over - dude has failed miserably there.

He played great in that game and say what you want about the guy but he gets quite a few turnovers in the limited amount of time he plays.

I want to see him play a lot more going forward. He's earned it.

I would like to see him get a chance to start next to Jones.

He's a 4.3 fastest , mainly 4.4 -4.5 guy. Maybe slow to learn the position, but definitely has the wheels, and looks like the hands that we sorely need in our secondary.

Took me awhile but I kept negotiating and almost got the number 1 pick overall. I ended up settling for the 19th overall and their 1st next year.

Working on a deal that would send Hanna and a draft pick to Chargers for Hunter Henry.

Last trade I'm working on will go after a elite pass rusher like Clowney, Watt, Donald, or Daniele Hunter.

Free agency I signed Eric Berry

In the draft went CBs, LBs, DL and grabbed a 6'4 reciever with 4.3 speed.

Couldn't resign Leary but did trade Free for a 4th and 6th rounder. Slide Collins to RT and Cooper into LG

You are the MAN.... I vote an immediate pay raise for you $$$$$$$$$ spend it on whatever you desire....

he had the only two ints for us in this game, maybe he should get a shot at starting safety.
I'll just add that he is the only player to pick off an Aaron Rodgers pass in the hot streak of now 8 games

Exactly.

He's going to be a nice special teams, nickel/dime guy for us. There's no shame in that.

But this talk about how we should start shifting guys around to now make room for him as a starter is putting the cart waaaaaaaayyyyyy ahead of the horse.

Great post!

We only see what he does while missing what a better player would do. As we proved this season, (actually the last ten) we can no longer be serviceable on defense. We are never going to win a Super Bowl with that approach.

So, with that being said, here's how to ask the question.

Who would you rather have, Darren Woodson or Jeff Heath? Because really - that's the difference.

That's what we should be looking for and only then we can start the discussion of whether Heath is a valuable backup and special teams player but that's where it should end.

Thanks for the OP. I like a bill presented with payment in full - for entering the Cowboys' secondary to catch a ball. Yea, that sticks in this old linebacker's mind.

That zone should be as black 'n blue as the month of December for the Cowboys!
