It hasn't been a very good year for most of the assistant coaches. Gary Brown didn't get Joseph Randle to develop into the style of runner he needed to be. Granted, he was a 5th round talent, but it didn't work. Dunbar was excellent, but neither Michael or Smith have really played much.
Dooley saw Williams' game plateau and we see that Williams is woefully incompetent as the #1 WR. I didn't expect him to be a good #1 WR with Dez out, but he should be respectable.
I think Escobar's days here are done, so Mike Pope hasn't developed him. And I think it's time we stop trying to get predominantly pass receiving TE's that have no blocking ability unless they are incredible athletes and we are willing to line them up out wide most of the time. Oh yeah, stop drafting these guys in the second round.
It's hard to judge Pollack given the injuries to Romo and Dez along with Leary being gimpy. I also can't blame him for Free's unstable play at this point of Free's career. Collins has looked really good. I would say he's a push.
Leon Lett and Ben Bloom have to take what they can get. With Terrell McClain being out on I-R, that didn't help matters and the Cowboys have a pet cat in Nick Hayden (who actually hasn't played that bad this year). Tyrone Crawford has been disappointing. Jack Crawford sucks. Gregory can't get on the field due to his ankle. I wouldn't be too down on Bloom and Lett, but I would lean towards negative.
Eberflus has faced the same problem. Lee can't stay healthy. And with Lee and McClain, that means that Hitchens has to play the SAM and in today's game the SAM doesn't see much playing time. McClain has been horrendous and I don't know how you can blame the LB coach for a LB showing up out of shape. Damien Wilson looks the part, but he is a 4th round rookie. Gachkar blows.
Morris Claiborne has improved, but he's still not very good. We've never done much with Carr, especially for what he is being paid. Corey White was a nice pickup and Byron Jones is doing well and I still think Patmon is solid. Our safeties blow and that may fall more on Joe Baker than Jerome Henderson. Of course, there's not much talent there outside of Wilcox and his regression really bothers me.
I think all in all, we need to get rid of the players that Rob Ryan prompted big contracts or draft picks to on defense (Lee, Claiborne, Carr and Church).
