Merch sales are shared. But showing highlights on twitter in itself doesn't generate revenue. It's not about money but control. The NFL wants to control its image and I get that. But teams should be able to show highlights with some regulation such as not using video to attack officials

It is about money, not directly but I bet the networks put pressure on the NFL to make sure all media is in their hands first.

If the owners want to do this, they can vote to make it so. It's not that complicated.

Seems like they are essentially doing that now. No doubt this will be officially reviewed and voted on.

I'm sure but tweeting a highlight has no bearing on that
It's not like they would be sending them during games and any media source can show highlights. Money is usually a motivater but this is more about control of a product

Interesting note.

In AT&Ts acquisition of DirecTV (yeah the same at&t buying time Warner for like 85 billion), they had a caveat in the deal

They could walk away from their buying DirecTV for 49 billion if DirecTV failed to renew the Sunday ticket package.

The plot thickens.

TV stations' sports departments video NFL games. What are the laws/rules governing those pixels?

No. They're not shared. Only through the NFL licensing sales outlets.

Jerry has the Dallas Cowboy Pro shops all through the Metroplex and direct sells to many companies.

I believe they are NFL licensed so they pay a royalty which is shared

I don't agree that the players should be able to post highlights, but I do think the team should.

The team is paying the players, so it owns the content. Players should not be able to give out that content for free. Each team has the right to market its product and social media is a marketing tool. The league should be free to use whatever content it needs to to promote the team, but so should the team that generates that content and contributes to the overall structure of the league.

IMO, the league is being shortsighted on this. There would need to be some restrictions and limitations involved, but it's better to have 33 entities drawing eyes to the the league through social media than just one.
Yeah I can see your point

If Bease's wife videos a Cole play with her remote communication device, is she restricted from playing on the Tweet?

I actually think it has more to do with younger generation moving away from "live" television of any sort. They want to watch content when they have time not when networks air it. I wouldn't be surprised to see TVs start to go away in next few years for early adopters of mobile only devices in home.

Which brings me to another point. I have friend who started taping Cowboys games and watches them later. He says its 100% more enjoyable and less stressful. If they win he watches it completely. If they loose he might not even watch any of it. This way his experience of watching Cowboys is totally enjoyable with no heart breaking losses to endure.

While I agree with you about the current state of TV and not watching things live anymore, I really don't think sports are a large part of that move at all. I think the vast majority still watch sports live if they are going to watch it.
