This only confirms the serious issue with the Cowboys organization: they are absolutely horrible at evaluating their own players

Fact: Barry Church is a good but replaceable player, and it's obvious that an upgrade would be a benefit to the defense

Fact: Handing J.J. Wilcox a starting safety job is a catastrophic, Alan Ball-like mistake

Fact: The Cowboys do not have ANYONE in the secondary that "scares" opposing offenses

Fact: If Calvin Pryor is the highest rated player on Dallas' board when they're on the clock, TAKE HIM FOR CRYING OUT LOUD

I kept saying to pay attention to whats going on in Dallas. They really like what they have in Church Wilcox and Heath

But...why? They have a history of overlooking/under valuing the position's influence on D...not surprising, doesn't make it right.

Barry Church is awful. He doesnt get near the ball. He was ranked something like the 49th safety in the league by PFF.

He is Keith Davis without the bullet magnet.

Church is only considered good around here because Safety play has been so horrid since Hamlin's one good year. He can tackle...

I said in another thread that Church gets such massive support because he isnt a complete and total embarrassment like a ton of the garbage we have trotted out. If you unfocus your eyes he even resembles an NFL player at times, mostly when he is tackling.

Great synopsis of Church's tenure in Big D. He would be the ideal 3rd S or ST Ace...but is starting bc of lack of talent at the position.

I would take a LB in the mid rounds for depth, not the 1st or 2nd for sure

Clinton Dix or Pryor in the first round would be an instant upgrade

How can you say this after only one year with Heath and Wilcox? Dallas has invested a lot of time (not to mention some money) in Wilcox and Heath. To draft a safety early this year would render the Wilcox pick a complete waste. He 's going to get another season before they call him a bust. What's more, he deserves another year.

Dallas really likes what they have in him and Heath, as well as Matt Johnson. There has to be a reason they keep him around.

Honest to god how can you defend the safety play this year? They were physically and mentally outmatched in every phase of the game in every game they played.

I hope you're right and they develop into a solid unit but when I watch Seattle and San Francisco I find it impossible to think Jeff Heath will ever become that kind of player.

We will continue to ignore that position at our own peril and Jerry saying he's happy with it is disgraceful - he can be happy with the improvement of the offensive line not the safety play. But as I said I hope I'm wrong and you're right.

We need a S. Of course, that means we won't get one.

Just like last year with the DL. And the year before with the OL. The team has shown it will address a need only when it ruins their previous season. Sure, you could argue that safety play pretty much ruined last season but the defensive line got all the press. That's where the resources will be spent.

That being said, we can get a really really good LB at 16 so I am definitely not opposed to that position. I don't believe Sean Lee will ever finish a season.

But to say you're OK with out safeties because we drafted a former RB out of Georgia Southern in the 3rd round, and because our UDFA QB bullseye played a ton of games, is absolutely ridiculous. Both Pryor and Clinton-Dix are better than what we have here and if they're the best players on our board, we should draft one of them.

Well, happy with safety is laughable..... between Saftey, DE, DT, or LB.... he should just go best available prospect in the first few rounds.

I dont know whether to laugh or cry,Jerry looked at our historically bad defense and concluded that we are set safety.no pass rush will make Church and Heath cover better, they can barely catch the freaking ball.we are one early hit on Romo from completely unraveling next season.

People please calm down. Jerry is at the combine. Everything he will say to the media until after the draft is a lie. He does this every year. It's called blowing smoke. Next week he will come out and say we need a safety and we are fine a DT

Biggest problem I had with drafting Wilcox was his inexperience in the position coupled with the lack of a mentor already on the 53. If he had a Woodson to teach him the ropes then okay, take the chance on him. That wasn't in place. The kid's uphill battle became an Everest like climb. And that is before the lack of a pass rush and the unfamiliarity of a new system for the veterans around him.

Safety - LB - D line. There is no position on this defense that doesn't require an upgrade. Whoever is top of your board you go with. In a deep draft like this I do not see anyone willing to give a lot to move up unless they have a very specific need. I'm not sure anyone in the 10 or so picks behind us fits that description this year.

I don't know what game Jerry watches on Sundays. Church was horrendous last year and just isn't a starting caliber safety.

This will be the same nonsense that we went thru at center until we drafted Frederick. We'll just keep hoping to 'get by' at safety and we will end up wondering why our pass defense sucks.

Other thing he said is we are deep at Sam LB, and that this position is a dumping ground for guys who can't play Mike and Will.

Doubt we draft Barr even if he is there.

So no Clinton Dix, Pryor or Barr with our 1st pick. I think it will be either Zack Martin, Mike Evans or Aaron Donald.

I'll add to this.

The Cowboys need to stop worrying about positions they're good and not good at, and simply just DRAFT SOLID FOOTBALL PLAYERS. Good organizations that seriously compete every year like Pittsburgh, Green Bay and New England don't worry about nonsense like Jerry does. Draft solid football players every year, regardless of position, and you'll compete.

Too much already invested in the secondary. We need pass rushers. Adding Pryor or Clinton dix is a wasted pick if the opposing qb has 10 seconds in the pocket on every snap.

If you can't get a pass rusher at 16, trade back

This is poor defensive line class and I wouldn't reach for one in the 1st round. Trading back is fine, but if Pryor is on the board at #16, I'm taking him.

Better coverage in the secondary = more time for the pass rush to reach the QB
