Jerry Jones Doesn't Expect Cowboys To Be Big Spenders In Free Agency

Elite DEs who are young and will fit our system and who deserve big money and don't have a massive red flag...how often do they actually reach free agency? You think Mack is getting to free agency? Or someone like him?

You have to build through the draft. And it's why in the draft you need to grab the guys that are the hardest to replace in free agency.

And this is what people fail to understand. Sure, it sounds great to say let's go out and get the best young DE available in free agency. But free agency isn't anything liek a grocery store where you just go and buy what you need. Its more like second hand store.

Cowboys are going to have to draft the guy that will be that pass rusher. There's guys out there every draft that fall through the cracks. Trust your scouts and try and find them. Sounds like a long shot but that's how it is.

The pass rushing may have to come from our linebackers or a Jaylan Smith if he can get healthy.

We can sign 1 big money guy this offseason, especially if Romo & some others leave or restructure. But we should stick to primarily building the team up through the draft. It's working.

Damien Wilson, Anthony Brown, Maliek Collins will get better. They have big upside.

Next year we'll see what we have in Jaylon Smith, Tapper, if Gregory stays, etc. And we'll get some more help in here in the form of some top 1st and 2nd and 3 round defensive rookies.
Really wish I could like this post more than once.

Right on the money. We are closer than most think to having a really nice defense.

Free agency was never meant to build a team like the Commanders tried to do in years past, it is meant to add a piece here and there to compliment your core players through the draft. Like the Packers signing Peppers a couple of years back.

So with that being said, I hope the Cowboys do not completely disregard free agency, adding a high ticket defensive pressure guy might be the missing piece this team needs. I can guarantee everybody that if we do get beat in the playoffs this season, it will be because of lack of pressure on the opposing QB.

I have complained that we haven't signed anyone because we could use the talent

The salary cap is a fake excuse is what I am saying

Most FO fans say that they have made some big changes but in reality we never sign anyone big

Bad signings like Free and TCrawford would have been a bigger deal if the cap hadn't gone up so much........we still make big mistakes with personnel
Crawford is one of the worst signings. The dude hasn't done **** to merit the contract, and certainly hasn't done **** to justify it.

That was a case of signing a player early, the thinking was to get him locked into a deal before he took the next step and became a probowler.

Problem is, he never took that next step. So we are paying the dude like he is a probowler, but his play does not warrant it. This is the risk with trying to lock up guys early, sometimes they never take that next step and you end up overpaying bad for the production you end up getting.

Olive(I'm sure I butchered the spelling) Vernon from the Giants has been a big time get for the Giants and he was a big ticket free agent at age 25 looks like he will be a pain in our rear foe years to come

Don't build via free agency just fix where you've whiffed in draft consistently like we have at edge rusher... I'm sure we need someone who is a playmaker and difference maker on defense we can have all of our money tied up on offense and have cast offs and "hustle guys"

Defense wins Super Bowls... offense will make the regular season fun and division titles come

Mike Lynn was absolutely convinced his 1989 Vikings team was 1 player away from a Super Bowl run.

I still think the Cowboys could've won that Super Bowl in 1995 without Deion Sanders.

We might have won even without Haley.

Of course because he did those deals, Jerry likes to claim we don't win those Super Bowls without Sanders and Haley

Oh, I think covering half of the field in pass coverage with Deion and having a constant pressure with sacks from Haley, were very significant.

This is closer to the truth, back then...

Blue chip DEs tend to go early in the draft and Dallas will be picking late in round one. It might be tough getting what is considered an elite prospect at that position but I'm pretty sure we'll try. I'm hoping the FO might change their mind about taking the FA route if a good one becomes available. In any case, we won't know until next year about that, so it's yet to be determined. Perhaps a trade might be the answer by then. Tony Romo for a good DE, perhaps? H-m-m -- you never know.

It would be nice to add a couple of pieces like Seattle did a couple if years back. Bennett and Avril really put that defense over the top.

They will and always do. It's just that Stephen and McClay shop in the bargain bin after the big contracts have been given out. They will do the same thing next year just like this year.
TO was a pretty good investment but, Mr. Hardy was horrible and probably closed the door on pricey acquisitions. In any case, Jerry will always spend more for offense than he will
for defense. He is sold on the fact that a great, time controlling, offense and an average defense can win the SB. Since the Patriots have done it, he believes he can too.
I can see a possibility where we go with more mid level, Thornton type signings this year. 2 to 3 year deals with mid level money. Ware if his price is at about 5 could be looked at in the vein of Long last year. If he is coming on a 2 year, 10-12 year deal they may show interest.

Jaball Sheard is another guy who could fit. He may go for more then mid range money though.

Dre Kirkpatrick is a guy to watch. Played well this year, but I dont thino he has the track record to sign a big deal. He is a candiate to " bet on himself" with a one year deal. Which if we go with a name type signing, those deals are what we are looking at the most.

Jarvis Jones, Barkavious Mingo, DJ Hayden and Cordarelle Patterson are names to remember. First round failures that would be cheap. Very cheap. They seem to really like bringing in former prime picks to see if they can fit them in somehow

They only guy that might have a chance is Melvin Ingram. Tag candidate, but you never know with SD.

Even so, he will get paid to be a 15 sack a year guy on the open market when he is really a 10 sack a year guy

Or you continue to do what made you Super Bowl caliber in the first place. Draft well.

I think another good draft could put us over the top. I still have concerns about our defense and whether it's strongest to propel us to the Super Bowl. Even so, we're going to need a stronger defense to be a perennial contender.

Even at the time, knowing that was the thought process, it was baffling. Especially considering Wares release and the hardline stance with Demarco. Just a strange move all around.

Find bargains in guys who went in the 1st round but currently have their rookie contracts up on perennially losing teams like the Jets, the Browns, the Jags....

Guys who will turn down bigger coin elsewhere to come here and play for a Super Bowl contender next year.

Not too many guys will turn down bigger coin, especially if they're coming off a rookie contract.
