Here's what David Lee said about Matt Cassel less than three weeks ago --

"To me, he is really the glue in that quarterback room. I've seen him when things get difficult just sit those guys down and go through it with them. I've seen him share his notes, Xerox his notes, and say, 'This is how I categorized this.' I mean, he's ... I've never been around one that good. Chad Pennington was really good with the other quarterbacks. But this guy is really, really good."

Exactly. Sounds like a pretty strong endorsement indirectly.

Kinda makes lee look like a girl with hurt feelings now

The explaination is simple. The Cowboys don't think Kellen Moore has an NFL arm so they needed a second QB who is capable of making all the throws in the route tree.

This is about managing games. The road to Romo's return could be 5-2 if you manage the offense, and the defense steps up.

Falcons
Saints
Giants
Eagles
Bucs

Those are all winnable games. But this requires a game manager who doesn't turn over the ball. Stay within the game plan and allow the talent surrounding him to shine.

Weeden is on a short leash. One stumble and they will insert a guy that could very well be a game manager.

This is not Beuerlein. But this is doable.

Smart money hedges its bet. Weeden was a cheap hedge. But he also has questions. Cassel isn't Brady, but he has won before.

However, Jerry needs to read the tea leaves and start grooming the guy who will be here the day Tony retires. Better now than an unexpected Irvin-like retirement injury.

David Lee, I'm your ice cream man stop me when I'm passing by.

That David Lee?

He was the QB coach for the Cowboys in Romo's early years. Romo once said he learned more from him than from any other coach.

Rosewood. You need Rosewood fretboard. My first Fender had a maple neck and I loved it. Though every one since has always had a Rosewood. Your hand slides easier over it. :)

My current Fender (American Deluxe)

I'm holding out for the rosewood fretboard being a Les Paul. Nice guitar you got there.

They have a great warm sound. Even the Studio versions, but the attention to detail isn't what it should be with the Gibson Studio Les Paul models. Go with at least a standard if you can. My Studio sounded great, but it had paint on the neck. No way a $1k+ guitar should have paint on the side of the fredboard.

I will get another, but I will hands on inspect it. I will take another studio *IF* it passes hands on inspection. (it sounded awesome) Otherwise, it will at least be a standard version.

Yeah but the problem is the #2 is now the #1 and they wanted some one with experience to come in and back up Weeden. I think Kellen Moore is viewed as developmental not ready to take on the role. Cassel really comes in cheap and has experience including starting. I knew Dallas had to get someone in here, a 5th rd pick in 2017 at a 1.7 mill contract for 1 year is very doable

That's generally how backups work. Guy in front of them get hurt, so now they play. The problem I have is that the move looks to more than just a "need a backup for Weeden". It looks like they're insuring themselves against the possibility that Weeden might not get the job done.

You don't get the reason for picking up Cassel. They got him to be our veteran backup to Cassel. What happens if Cassel gets hurt? Start a QB off our practice squad? That's why Cassel was brought in. If Weeden stinks up the joint, Cassel might even replace him, but he was brought in to be the backup.

If Weeden gets hurt then the next guy plays. Isn't that the idea behind "next man up"? What if Weeden and Cassel both get hurt? Who plays? Does the team trade another pick for someone else's backup?

Clearly the team was not comfortable with a young UDFA being the "next man up". This isn't rocket science. Some on here are damn near brain dead.

What was the trade details for Cassel anyway?

Peanuts:
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport broke the news Tuesday that Dallas acquired quarterback Matt Cassel from the Bills. The Cowboys later confirmed the move, which didn't cost the team much. TheCowboys sent a 2017 fifth-round pick to the Bills in exchange for a 2017 seventh-round pick, NFL Media's Albert Breer reported according to a Cowboys team source.

If they weren't comfortable with Weeden being the most experienced QB behind Romo they should have addressed that in the offseason.

We're talking about a QB with back issues. Not exactly some far-fetched idea that he may miss time. You either need the experience to feel comfortable or you don't. 6 moths ago they didn't, and now they do. Either carry the 3rd guy or don't. What happens when Romo returns? Keeping all those guys because it's a good idea now?

You still just don't get it. It's not about Weeden. It's about having a backup to Weeden. A team with Super Bowl aspirations does not want to have to play a developmental practice squad QB that has never taken an NFL snap. If Weeden were to go down and we didn't sign Cassel (or any vet QB) that's where we would be. Let that sink in.

Which is exactly where the team would be if Weeden and Cassel both go down. My last post had little to do with Weeden except for the fact that I mentioned him to point out how little experience there is behind him, which is something that all of a sudden is problematic for a team who has had a QB with questionable health.

If no experience behind Weeden is a problem now, it should have been a problem since Romo had to undergo the surgery for his back.

Who still uses Xerox as a verb?

Wow! I just don't know what to tell you. No team carries 3 or more vet QBs. You carry a starter, a vet backup and a developmental QB. If an injury happens, you adjust. That's what we did. You can't carry veterans three Deep at every position. There's this thing called a salary cap and a 53 man roster. You simply make adjustments when you have to. This is not hard to follow.
