don't expect a concrete answer

Answer for what?

When people start talking about excuses they seem to think that they are in a position to excuse something and it be meaningful in anyway shape or form. OTOH, if you go from that to the paradigm of being curious as to why something happens then you can increase your knowledge.

I am interested in understanding why something happens. Why does Bruce Carter throw his hands up in frustration. What is he doing? Why can Hayden not get off the line quickly? What were the Cowboys thinking when they made this or that pick? etc.

People that start talking about excuses as if they are in any position to judge properly or demand any accountability is hubris to the extreme.

Cowboys owner and General Manager Jerry Jones has no doubts that his team is better right now than it was last season.

Jones said after the NFL draft that it’s clear to him that the Cowboys’ roster is stronger than it was in 2013, when Dallas completed its third consecutive 8-8 season.

Yes, we are better,” Jones said. “There’s no question about that. Relative to where we played last year, we’ve had a very impactful draft.

News flash ware is gone, Witten and Romo are a year older. The defense is one of if not the worst in the league. You aren't better your just selling tickets to the rubes. The team needs to be blown up and rebuilt. Manziel, I don't know but you better hope that it isn't like passing on moss again.

We still haven't done anything to really improve the defense.

Does this mean there are no excuses for this year, because I don't want to hear any excuses when the season is over if we go 8-8 again. I want this thing blown up and your pet-project finished for good.

Were only better if the drafted/signed players hit the field and contribute this year. We wont know till August if were better. Looks better on paper, but they dont play em on paper. We'll see soon enough.

Just to clarify another misconception:

Callahan was still the OC when this season was over and only were interested in Linehan once he was fired. Jerry explicitly said that it made sense for the passing game, because Linehan's offense was closer to Garrett's and they wouldn't have to make any significant changes in concept with Callahan who coaches primarily West Coast passing scheme, though the style would be totally different. It's pretty obvious that their were limitations in Callahan calling passing plays.

Callahan is still in charge of the running game and they are keeping his zone-blocking scheme. Linehan's offense ran a power-blocking scheme similar to Garrett. It's clear Jerry didn't want to abandon that. It's also pretty evident that Callahan still holds influence cause of the Zach Martin pick.

Plus, Jerry probably doesn't want to give anybody free money next year, which he's probably playing a wait and see, if he needs to blow it up.

Although Linehan and the Cowboys were attracted to each other because of his prior relationship with coach Jason Garrett and his offense, Jones said his hire represents real change for the team on offense. It will not only be a change in style but a change in terminology in how they call plays on offense.

"Linehan gives us a complete real change of our offense with our terminology," Jones said. "It's different. Although [Garrett and Linehan] have been together coaching, you can't see a lot of what we've been and what they did up in Detroit. He's got a track record of really zeroing in and building the offense around the talent, the specific talent and the qualities of the players."

Regardless of what a Jerry says, and people have legit reason rolls eyes at his constant optimism,

I DO think they will be better.

It's not just based on hope either.

As always, time will tell one way or the other.

Make you no mistake. It's marketing, not optimism.

A fact would actually be that the offensive line is better. Everything else is open to interpretation.

Everything else is open to speculation, especially the impact Lawrence will have on the defense.

I think that Lawrence can be a decent player but I seriously doubt he was worth a 2nd and a 3rd. Fair or unfair, he needs to produce a minimum of ten sacks this year in order to justify the expense of moving up for him. The rest of the draft class can make up for the reach on Lawrence but he still has to excel.

The point being, with Callahan calling plays in a Coryell offense, there would be no real change because he was limited in play calling in Garrett's playbook. With Linehan, there would be real changes.

I had this discussion with friend and we both agreed we are not sure they are better. Dallas has three key starters coming back from injury (Melton, Lee, Crawford). They lost a productive player in Hatcher and they miss Ware production from 2006-2012. You add to this Tony Romo back and things get uncertain in a hurry. I won't even try to predict this year but one thing we can say is they are alot younger on defense and your offensive line is completely rebuilt with 5 home grown starters (when was last time Dallas could say that).

Jerry says this stuff every year. He's the ringmaster.

I'd be shocked if the defense was worse but they won't be good.

If there was one thing I could change about Jerry today, it would be having him sit down and be quiet.

I will never understand why Jerry does not sit in the corner with the real power brokers (McClay and garrett) during the draft

Anybody that can't see that JFB was poison for this team would call it coddling. It's funny how
teams do their damnedest to avoid controversy because of the locker room divide and
media hounds tying their daily sports column to that very controversy.
But Jerry was coddling. I call it protecting. His money and the team.

He has to be the center of attention and needs to be important. OTOH, he did spend a lot of money so he could play NFL so I don't blame him too much for doing so since that appears to be his purpose and desire. That doesn't change the fact it is annoying at best and maddening at worst.
