Jerry Jones still capable of making splash, says draft is setting up for Cowboys

I always chuckle at this notion of a splash because we have 10 picks.

7 of them are the 4th round or later. You ain't making a splash with that. But with a solid draft you should be able to grab a few key players and some decent depth guys.

Doesn't mean that he can't dip into next year's picks. That is how he is going to make a splash.

Love Derwin but i'm not giving up a 1 and a 2.

We can't skip Free Agency and then give away our entire draft as well for 1 player.

Getting a badass safety is worth all of the meaningless second round picks in the world. If we identify a player that would make the team that much better to give up a 2nd there is no issue to me. They just have to interview the player beforehand unlike Claiborne to screen them.

that's what I took out of it....tipping our hand

He also mentions the quantity of WRs leading me to think they can get one later. Notice most of the positions were on the offensive side. Wondering if it's a couple defensive players they'd like to see drop.....

Also, I would rule out them trading up a few slots if their target starts falling

Jerry Jones knows what you are thinking.

As host of the 2018 NFL Draft, set for April 26-28 at AT&T Stadium, there is no way the attention-hungry, circus-creating, pot-stirring owner of the Dallas Cowboys is going to find a way to make a splash when it comes to his turn with the 19th overall pick.

So Jones says just go with it.

Jones still has it in him.

And with a cadre of 10 picks, the Cowboys have the selections to trade up to get the player they want.

But Jones believes there is a good chance the Cowboys could stand pat and still get their guy at 19.

“Well, the rumors of the wildcatter’s demise has certainly been exaggerated,” Jones said with a smile and a wink at the NFL owners meeting. “I’m not going to but I would like to, apart from a couple of player personnels, I’d like to show a few other decisions that I’ve made around here, and they’ve got more hair on them then you’d ever seen. So I will take a chance. Still.”

With so many teams moving up to get a quarterback and the possibility of several running backs and offensive linemen going high, Jones said the draft is setting up nicely for the Cowboys.

"We are positioned in the way the makeup is if a number of quarterbacks are taken, a number of running backs are taken, two or three or those offensive tackles hit,” Jones said. “Really as much as anything there could be a couple of guards taken ahead of us. And it’s positioned for a situation to drop. … But with what is happening with a little bit of ambiguity on the number of quarterbacks and what we just talked about, there could be an active draft there in the first round."

Jones could make a huge splash by throwing himself into a wood shredder. If he could throw his whole family in before he takes the dive head first himself, that would be reason to take notice. Beyond that. Not so much.

Might as well trade away the 2nd rounder to move up. High chance they waste it anyway.

He mentioned QB and RB.

In my mind that leaves us down to

TE....... Just joking

DT, WR, LB, DE, DT, Safety and corner

Unless Ward is there don't see a corner

So I think we can say WR,LB,DL and safety are the guys we are looking at.
m

Other than Chubb, don't see any other top 10 DL and certainly not at WR. So I'm thinking S or LBers they are hoping will drop. After missing on Ramsey couple years ago, sure they'd love to get James.

Jerry has controlled himself pretty well for a few years now. I'd say he's over it.

Of course there's the possibility that it's just been quietly building up inside and he's working on a reverse-Herschel mega-deal to get Tom Brady.
Just so he doesn't get someone like Leveon Bell...

The mere thought of Jerry using the upcoming draft to "prove his mettle" scares me to no end. He needs to step back, allow Will McClay to do his thing and forget about showing off. Jerry's making noise like he's smacking his lips and entertaining thoughts of getting singularly involved in things. That's anything but a scenario to anticipate with great expectations. Let's just hope that enormous ego doesn't cause him to do something epically stupid. Anytime Jerry starts talking about "taking chances," it's enough to upset stomachs.

Good to know we are letting everyone know our plan.

Good to know we would be fine with an OT to be taken ahead of us.....
Doesn’t matter what is said. Draft never goes the way anyone thinks it will. So the notion that we’re somehow showing our hand is ridiculous.

Appears he's laid out part of our draft plan for the first round: No quarterback, no running backs, no offensive tackles and no guards.

What that means? Wide receiver and defense is what we're looking at.

That shouldn't be a surprise, though, and I'm not sure wide receiver is high on the list unless there's a change at the position.

I do find it interesting that he didn't exclude any defensive position, which could mean that DL is a possibility. I would think that corner would be out, though, so maybe he's being at least a little vague.

Failed to read the whole story so I didn't see this quote:

“They got a lot of receivers in this draft, for instance,” Jones said. “I am not sure how many first-round receivers. But there are down-the-line receivers. That is not bad. That might work. There are certainly some linebackers there. There is some defensive talent that has a chance to drop. Therein lies your opportunity there at positions that you certainly aren’t stacked up in that you might not say is the position you are interested in. ... Obviously, you could see that Dez Bryant dropping to you at the 20th spot.”

Seems like that would mean receiver in the first round is pretty much out. (The Dez Bryant comment seems to be more about talent level than that position.) Linebacker gets a special mention, so that might be at the top of the list of the defensive talent that seems to be the focus.

Of course, on offense, he didn't say anything about tight end, but I think that's probably because there's none worth taking before our pick.
