Jerry Jones weighs in on mistakes from Cowboys' 4-12 run and why he's screaming into his pillow

ARLINGTON - With training camp approaching at the end of the month in Oxnard, Calif., Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and executive vice president Stephen Jones met with reporters Monday following an official announcement welcoming the Canelo Alvarez-Liam Smith boxing fight in September to AT&T Stadium.

They spilled some tidbits about the Cowboys:

*Running back Lance Dunbar's rehab is going well, according to Stephen Jones.

Dunbar's recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament in his left knee in October is progressing faster than anyone expected, though the Cowboys will be cautious in how they bring him back. If his return crowds the running backs room even more (Ezekiel Elliott, Darren McFadden, Alfred Morris), Jerry Jones is just fine with it.

"We've got the quality there to where if it works itself out to where we keep them all," Jones said, "we'll keep them all. And we'll go short on other positions. They're too good. It's too important. ... We want that kind of depth."

*The status of RB McFadden (elbow), defensive tackle Maliek Collins (foot) and defensive end Benson Mayowa (knee) will be watched closely during training camp.

"We could certainly see a few of those guys start off on [Physically unable to perform list]," Stephen Jones said. "We want to be careful with them. This is a long season, and we all remember last year when Darren McFadden missed a majority of the camp in Oxnard and then went on to have a tremendous year."

*Jerry Jones on the suspensions of LB Rolando McClain, DE Randy Gregory and DE DeMarcus Lawrence and the impact of them all coming on the defensive side:

"You want to make the best of it and look for the silver lining. The silver lining is that there's going to be some younger guys step up. I think that we can look at that, surely we'll get some consideration from the main decision-maker, the guy up above. And say, 'Look, we don't want to take away any more. We've got enough right there.' If he'll leave those guys out there that weren't out there last year for us, [Tony] Romo and Dez Bryant and get us a good, continued success in our offensive line, then maybe something's compensating for it. There's nobody that's got any empathy or sympathy for us, for me, for my nightly screaming in my pillow."

He does, but hes also prideful and wants to do it his way. Win on his own terms. But i see your point, its a good one.

Jerry's problem is that he lets ego and pride get in the way of doing the right thing. It's the ultimate downfall of this team. And why the team hasn't sniffed the NFC Champioship Game in over 20 years.

Just typing that stat depresses me.

If he really, truly cares for the Cowboys, he'd hire a GM.

I agree 100%. Color me unimpressed by how much money he makes. Color me unimpressed about how "relevant" the Cowboys are.

I totally get in the initial post Jimmy era he wanted to show himself, the fans, other front office executives around the league...that he was a "football man" and could win without Jimmy. But this has gone on long enough. It is the fans that are suffering. I don't enjoy 1 red cent of his billions.

I don't puff my chest out when debating with fans from other teams about being the #1 franchise in the world in terms of monetary value. On the level fans are at...it's about enjoying Sundays cooking out on the grill and cheering your team on. At the end of games...at the end of seasons....it never crosses my mind to say "well...at least we make more money than anyone else"!!!!!

Man- its so obvious that jerry loves and cares for the cowboys. As an owner, what more could you ask for. Sure he makes mistakes as a GM, and im sure nobody beats himself more over these mistakes than jerry.

Yes he wants to wins more than anybody. He loves the Cowboys. I think our approach the last few years has been spot on. We are building from the trenches outwards and not overpaying in the free agent market. We are in a tough spot at QB. Romo could be very good for a few more seasons or disaster could strike again. I understand not wanting to groom another qb prematurely only to send him somewhere else, like Brock Osweiler for example, but at the same time I wish wed be more aggressive at the position. Im excited about Dak and hopeful he can show something. Otherwise we really need an absolute emphasis on the position. However, for the most part I see a young team who is beginning to accumulate talent and will be in an excellent position in the near future and for years to come. For that I thank Jerry, he bought alot of my loyalty in the 90s. I know I stay optimistic in the offseason and usually feel we have a chance to do something special and thats about how the team is ran.

In the end, it doesn't matter how much he loves the Cowboys and wants to win if he continues to make mistakes. Because in the end, all that love results in nothing great for the fans. I think he too often mixes his love of the Cowboys with loyalty to people that don't necessarily deserve it.

I hope and pray this is a do or die year for Garrett. If Jerry really cares about this team and their future, if Garrett spits out another average season, he should be sent backing, loyalty or not.

Jerruh should be screaming on his pillow because he's the greatest mistake in every
failed Cowboys season since 1995

Yeah, hire a GM. That should do it. Any names you can offer? I guess everyone wanted Ozzie Newsome. Then again, after the crappy team he fielded last year maybe some of his magic is fading quickly. Just curious about what credentials a 'real GM' should have? NFL player experience? Scouting experience? Financial experience? What are you looking for in a GM? How about the Eagles' Howie Roseman or whatever his name is? Is he the type of GM you are looking for? He never played organized football even at the high school level.

Let's see.......

Somebody who doesn't go multiple decades without winning.

No GM in the history of the world would still be employed with Jerry's track record over the past 20 years.

While it's true that we haven't made it to an nfc championship game in that time you can't really say we haven't sniffed it. That implies getting close which we were a blown call away from 2 years ago and a Patrick crayton drop away in 2007.

I agree we should/would have made it in 2007. There were more mistakes than I care to recount in that 2007 game. We had already swept the Giants that year. And we had beaten the Packers (team Giants faced in the NFC title game) that year. So I think we would have made the Super Bowl that year. But Wade Phillips was NOT beating Bill Bellicheck.

But I disagree that if Dez catch had counted...we would have beaten the Packers. We showed zero ability to stop Rodgers that day. He would have gotten the ball back with plenty of time to do what he had done all day....torment us.

As I said a few time here on different threads.

What an ending to a game all fans missed by old Deano making a catch ruling mistake.
