Thanks for keeping it on point Idgit.

Not only is it a critical thread but for me personally, it shines some light on some things I was wrong about..maybe....that if we won games Jerry would be myopic, chalk it up to Garrett's mindtricks and stay the course. But it is nice to see that maybe he is looking at it from a different angle and that he isn't pleased just to win a sloppy game. It undermines the idea of "at least they play hard."

Over the years, Jerry does seem to get pissed about the end of game time management mistakes. Almost every serious criticism he's ever made of Jason Garrett has come after one of these games.

And he's right. If I'm the owner of a team, I'd overlook the second guessing of the play calling and such most of the time. But basic tactical mistakes that cost games and end seasons? For my billion-dollar vanity project? $6M/year is a lot of dough to spend. He's got a right to expect in-game coaching mistakes to very rarely negatively affect the outcome of a game. And when they do happen, he's right to make it clear that it's not tolerated.

I fully agree this is a good topic but how many years can we harp on JG's lack of time management skills. Nobody can fix stupid so why beat a dead horse. He is who he is.

If only there were a thread, or a forum, somewhere for you to remake that excellent point without detracting from the topic here in this thread....

We were a hair away from 9 straight losses without Romo. That, my friend, is completely unacceptable. I don't care how much Garrett beauty we trot out to try and justify it. To be that wrapped around one person on a squad of 53? Unacceptable.

This isn't the Jaguars. This is one of the most prestigious franchises in the history of the NFL. 9 straight losses. It didn't happen but it was within reach and we statched victory from those jaws. I don't know how we did it but I am not about to let any of these coaches off the hook for what I consider a complex lack of strategy. It's bad. Very bad.

As I noted before, Mike Tomlin doesn't appear to have much of an issue at least being very competitive and winning without Big Ben. Perhaps that has a little something to do with preseason strategy around backup selections, situational strategy taught during training camp, and a basic ability to make adjustments during games. Hmmm... Perhaps...

I'm elated that we somehow left Commander nation in the midst of turmoil yet again but I also choose to focus on the things we are lacking as well. Coahing prowess is one of those things.

Playing hard gets you participation medals.

Playing hard with a set strategy that prepares and focuses all 53 men with one solid direction gets you Lombardis.

Well said. It's distressing to me how low our standards have become. Maybe it is a sign of our times where just trying and participating is enough. But this is NFL football it should be a last bastion of manhood - and winning, like Lombardi said, is an all the time thing.

Garrett touches something in many media people and fans, where he talks lovingly of his players and how hard they are fighting, as if it is some rare feat in professional football, when actually guys quitting out there is such an exception that it is usually pointed out and universally mocked. I guess it is a smart ploy for him career-wise, as his Xs and Os have been found wanting and could not justify him keeping an NFL HC job.

But I yearn for a coach who I trust to outwit the other side more often than not, both in weeklong preparation and during the game adjustments and game management. But I guess it's enough nowadays to just feel good about the effort.

I think its a legitimate point to put a lot of the blame on McFadden for both going out of bounds and then not sitting down on the 1. And for all we know Garrett did say something to him and the team, but after two fumbles and getting his bell wrung pretty good McFadden was having himself quite a night.

That said, these are the type of things that ALWAYS seem to happen to this team. Other than one season when everything went exactly right, the penchant for the Garrett coached Cowboys has been finding ways to lose. We do it often. We've done it since he came here. We're still doing it. We tried to do it last night but Washington just tried harder.

Other than maybe the Browns, I can't think of a team that has come up with more creative ways to blow football games than this one the past 5 years. Its what we will remember about these teams when Garrett is gone IMO.

Parcells was noted for practicing every conceivable situation weekly. Obviously the same kind of situational awareness is not be conveyed to this group by these coaches. If this were an isolated incident or something that just happened once in a while, well its football and a fast moving game out there. Stuff happens.

But its not. Not even close. And at some point its not all on the players.

They don't just play hard for him. They clearly respect him and listen to him. They believe in him.

And no, that's not typical across the league.

I do think the lack of Romo, and by proxy the run game, has exposed Scott Linehan as what we knew he was all along. Just a another playcaller.

Romo has exposed Garrett as well. 1-7 without him. That respect isn't translating into wins. Every other aspect of coaching has been replaced during Garrett's tenure except for him. 1 winning season out of 5. Pre and post Linehan and Callahan and Wade and Kiffin and Marinelli etc.

If that is respect give me Rodney Dangerfield.

He doesn't have the locker room any more than 90 percent of NFL coaches out there. Is there dissent in Jacksonville? Houston? Etc etc? In fact they don't have monkeys and locker room media fights as far as I know.

Every NFL team plays hard 95 percent of the time. Garrett is not an exception for preaching that. He just isn't. The Skins played hard last night. It's not a new thing.

Seriously if all Garrett has is they play hard because 5 years ago the team took off a few plays under Wade then that is sad and pathetic.

I missed this and couldn't agree more.

I had this discussion with Idgit the other day and its true...this team mirrors the Texans under Kubiak. I hadn't moved to Chicago..and back to Dallas and was in Houston. I spent years listening to and visiting their board to see these exact same threads. Kubiak was a local guy who was nice as can be. He said the right things and was real nice to players and media. He went .500 years in a row. During that time he made HORRIBLE decisions in games....half back pass on the goal line that was intercepted to lose game. He was ultra conservative and loved FGs. They got good for 2 years and won a playoff game each year only to be manhandled against better coaches and teams. The owner had his back. Heck they wore letter jackets up to play the Patriots one year for team comraderie because they were all so close as teammates and to the coach. In the end, lack of results and a team tired of hearing the "aww shucks: excuses. They quit, he got canned. Went to be an OC and is coaching again. The one main difference is Kubiak actually had long term OC experience and his offense was always pretty good, even with backups.

The point is...they LOVED that guy. All players play hard, get paid, work hard, etc. JG isn't special. He just makes the same mistakes he did 2-3 years ago. Right now the outlier...and I think Jerry sees it...was last year when we had health and all the components perfect. So when things aren't perfect, we have confusion.

Ron Rivera was all but fired going into this season. Mike McCarthy is living off Rodgers. Rex is on the ropes again. Tomlin rode on LeBeau's coattails. Payton is useless without Brees. Lewis has had a million chances in Cincy.

Coaches are pretty much all the same. Quarterbacks are not.

Could be true but I just rarely hear Jerry say it or mention how the team could have been "coached up" better during a losing streak...a subject not really discussed in these 12 pages yet and to me the most crucial.

The Skins only had 2 timeouts left with only 1:13 on the clock, which means they can only stop the clock twice and would have left them with like 12 seconds on the clock after the FG. There's no way you score a TD there and allow them to keep their TO's with over a minute left in a game.

Someone probably already said this, but if McFadden stops short of the goal line, the final play would have been the fg try with no time left. Timeout 1 to stop the clock before 1st down. Timeout 2 after 1st down. 2nd and 3rd both milk up to 40 seconds.

Every one of those teams are doing better than us. And I will NEVER agree with you that coaches are all the same. Man that is not a good comment but won't argue it.

BTW, guys, let's see if we can't tone down the animosity in the thread here a little bit. This one's been a little bit bare knuckle for a bit here, but there are limits to what's cool and what's not.

I know tempers are hot after the disappointing win last night, but please at least try to be civil to each other.

There are times when a person can offer a word or a phrase that is so simple and insightful yet so profound. Your description of a "disappointing win" summarizes all the conflicts and arguments about the Cowboys' victory last night (from arguments over draft status to the win being meaningless to Garrett's handling of the game) as well as adds a touch of irony to the whole idea that we're actually mad because our favorite team won - and that without Romo - something Dallas hasn't been able to do all this season except for Monday night.

Great description! :)

So i found it odd to put the RB, who got his bell rung and had 2 fumbles, back in the game when all you need is to essentially melt the clock. Turbin if anything appears better suited for that role given his size/style.

Yeh it's Linehan's fault that we had these same issues before he was hired.

You could probably make an argument that Turbin and Cassel had already botched an exchange during the game, but other than that true. But if you've watched Garrett over the years there is no way someone other than a team veteran he "trusts" is in there in that situation.

No coaches are there to make up for that QB time. That is what Sturm was talking about last week and I agreed. To paraphrase he said "what good are you as a coach making adjustments if its all on one star player?" Almost all the guys above have won it all or have been repeatedly talked about as in the mix. We have had one perfect season and still won one game on a controversial call.

Tomlin won games without Ben. Rex kinda has a QB.

Again if you think all coaches are the same I really won't even go there. that is just way off anything my brain can process good luck with that.

It wasn't a good result, but you have to look at the stretch of games.

Ryan, Brees, Brady, Wilson, Eli, Bradford, and Winston. Yes, they should have pulled one or two out of that run, but the Cowboys were at a huge disadvantage because of the QBs involved.

Had they played Miami, Washington, Jets, Bills, etc, I think they come out much better. But they caught the tough run of games without Romo and Dez.

But I agree, they should not have gone 0-7.
