this statement is intiguing for all the possibilities that may lie under his words for what the Boys will do as MB's backup next year...if not drafting one of the blue chippers in this years draft (and assuming not picking up a 'cheap cut' from another team ala Dashaun Foster), than maybe converting Deon Anderson or Stanback to RB or something along those lines?...
thoughts?

What would shock me is if Parcells wanted to send Ronnie Brown here for a cheap price.

I'm thinking maybe someone like Derrick Ward, Melwade Moore or Jesse Chatham.

I've got a similar feelings, Jerry may be looking cheap while everyone is thinking he wants to sell the house.

I think Jerry is keeping his cards in hand. I don't put much into any pre draft statements by any team right now. No one is going to tell you exactly what they are going to do.

Its such a deep RB class though and its not like we have a lot of holes on this team.

If we don't take an RB in this draft I will be shocked.

The answer is somewhere in between.

It wouldn't be cheap for the Cowboys even if Parcells shipped him here for free. Brown has a 5/yr $35M contract.

A columnist wrote a few years ago that "In the painting of the poker-playing dogs, Jerry is the one wagging his tail."

:laugh2:

There's never a dull moment with Jerry. I don't know why he feels the need to say this.

For all the talk of trading up, I just hope we don't trade down.

I almost threw up when we passed on SJAX and still get a sick feeling about it when I see him tearing up in STL.

Hopefully Jerry will remember that.

The surprise?

I think we're going to draft Peyton Hillis, the one Arkansas RB/FB that no one has linked to us all offseason. Dallas has shown a good deal of interest in him, he's a versatile option who would fill multiple roster spots (RB, FB, ST) and can be taken rather late.

We'd still take a "speed" back too, someone like Chris Johnson who could contribute as the "complementary" back, as a receiver split out in the slot and as a kick returner.

That's it, I'm callin it.

I do know that they are very pleased with the progress of the kid from Hampton who was on the Practice Squad last year, Alonzo Coleman.

This is just a theory but we know they are going to let Julius walk. Make Barber the feature back (promising him this might make a contract easier to get done soon).

Then, unless someone unexpectedly falls into our laps they can draft a RB very late or as an UDFA (someone like Rodney Kinlaw from Penn State). Then let Thompson, Coleman, and Kinlaw fight for the final 2 roster spots.

I doubt Jerry knows exactly what he is gonna do yet?

First the FA backs need to be dicussed and see what their price will be. If deemed too high it makes more sense to look towards the draft.

All avenues are open until investigated I would imagine and money will dictate outcome.

Allen Patrick from OU may be a good RB in a limited role as well.

There is just so many fricken RB's to not role the dice with one of them in this class.

Its unbelievable.

I agree. This looks like a very good crop of RB this year and I would be amazed if Dallas did not come away with a RB.

I won't be at all shocked with this. I also think we'll get Markus Monk.

We're drafting McFadden, and any and everything Jerry says at this point is pure and utter smoke screen. Stop drinking the generic kool aid- it's for everyone else, not the Cowboy fans. Does nobody know our owner by now yet?

I don't think Hillis is the "surprise" JJ is hinting about. However, I do believe he's high on our list of players we're interested in. Hillis is a great pass catcher and good blocker. He would actually be a dangerous pass catching FB that we'd be able to use as a lethal weapon. He catches as well as a WR and can run after the catch. If we use him the way we used our rookie FB last year, before he got hurt, Hillis will be an unstoppable weapon in our offense. I wouldn't blink an eye if we grabbed him in the 3rd round, because he's that good. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if, after 3 years, we look back and he's the best of the Arkansas trio of RBs.

This is my thought.......there is no good reason to not just tender Barber and let him prove next year that he can carry the load 16 games. If he's highly successful doing that, I still don't think he'd earn all that much more $$$ than the $5 yr/$25 Mil contract previously outlined. And Dallas would be saving significant dollars THIS year. $2.5 Mil. Seems like a no brainer to me-why not make him prove it? He's never going to get LT type of $$$-Barber is a darn good back, but RB's need to be specail to merit huge dollars in this day and age of the platoon system.

Also, Dallas can spend a day 1 pick on a RB. Who knows, maybe they hit a homerun and don't need to pay Barber big dollars after next year? It could happen, then you stay cheap at the RB position. I doubt this scenario, but you never know. I see no reason to pay Barber big $$$ until they have too.
