Heh... That thought occurred to me, too.

But really, when I read what Jerry said, my first thought was free agency, and to me that would mean Michael Turner. There sure has been a lot of smoke both last year and this that Wade really likes him. Everyone assumes that Turner will get blown away by offers this year in FA, but I'm not sure he will. And if he doesn't, I could see us going after him as a proven commodity.

Very good point, I didn't even put it together the Turner/Wade connection because it was so obvious.

And you're probably right he won't get blown away by offers either with such a good crop of guys in the draft. If he does bring turner in as a FA, then that 2nd round pick we've all been hoping would go towards RB might actually get us a very good player at another spot.

Then again, how much of a home run threat is Turner? It'd kind of be like having two Barbers wouldn't it?

Then we can bring Owen in, and Hostile may go into meltdown mode seeing us pound teams with 3 guys like that. :laugh2:

What would shock me is if Parcells wanted to send Ronnie Brown here for a cheap price.

Parcells said on MNC last season that he didn't think Brown was a franchise-type back.

Then Brown promptly went out and led the AFC in yardage after Cameron pulled his head out of his butt and started giving him the ball, but still...

I already told my wife to seek an order of protection if we get Schmitt. I'm not as keen on Turner as others though the battering ram style of RBs are easily my preference.

I read something about him towards the end of last year. I forget who the author was. It might have been a Mick's Mail but I honestly am not sure. There was some serious thought given to bringing him up for the last game to see what he could do. He almost made the team out of Training Camp as it was. He might have if not for an injury. The competition between him and the RB from Houston was pretty fierce.

If I had to bet on 3 RBs on the active roster next year it would be Barber, a draft pick, and Coleman. My example kid Kinlaw could be a Practice Squad grooming or could push Coleman for the 3rd spot.

I just have a feeling we're not going to go big splash on RB in this draft because we want Barber to be the guy. If a guy falls, fine, we'll take value if it is there. The McFadden ideas are all wet. Never happen unless he drops like a stone.

Thanks Hostile. I was really high on Coleman and hoped to see him in real game situation. I think you are right though, we might not look at a RB that high in the draft. A late round pick migh be sufficient if the coaching staff is high on Coleman. I can also see the Boys sign a veteran RB in free agency for a reasonable price. The more i think about it the more it makes sense. God forbid, if MBIII was to get injured early in the season and misses a significant playing time, i would feel a lot better knowing that we have a vet RB to fall back on.

When JJ mentioned that we may be surprised on how we get a RB, I actually thought about Coleman, but only because Hos mentioned a few months ago that the coaching staff liked him.

I'm not sure how I feel about that. But I still hope we pick up a veteran to team with a guy with minimal pro experience (Coleman).

I still hope we pick up a RB in the Draft, however. It's just so deep for RBs. What about a guy like C Boyd late in the draft?

I think we really need a RB to pair with MBIII but who can also take over for a few games if MBIII gets hurt. Wouldn't be surprised if Coleman certainly viewed as our #3 RB with maybe a FA RB whose good real speed and could handle full time duty if necessary.

I also like the idea of drafting Hillis. Saw Huddle's assessment on Hillis who probably a projected 5th rounder. Hillis has good hands but also apparently he could also be a good RB if given the opportunity. I'd pair Deon Anderson & Hills as our FBs but Hillis might also be a good #3RB option as well. Doubt the one dimensional Hoyte makes the team if we can get Hillis.

I actually thought about the process that brought us Quincy Carter, Chad Hutchinson and Drew Henson during our "search" this decade for a QB.

All how I love Jerry's surprises.

Turner did not impress me in the playoff game. I do not consider him a proven back by any means.

If those were Jerruhs words then the first thing I took from that statement was how we get there may suprise you. I was instantly thinking how we get to the top of the draft to draft Dmac. That's what I got out of the statement. In other words, MB and the 2 first round picks isnt gonna happen but how we get to the top may suprise you...

I honeslty like DMac, But dont want us to sell the farm to get him. There are many other options at RB I would be content with. But if Jerruh had some kind of deal where he dealt some players and a future pick or something I wouldnt be shocked.

Am I the only one that took his statement as that possibility???

I do know that they are very pleased with the progress of the kid from Hampton who was on the Practice Squad last year, Alonzo Coleman.

This is just a theory but we know they are going to let Julius walk. Make Barber the feature back (promising him this might make a contract easier to get done soon).

Then, unless someone unexpectedly falls into our laps they can draft a RB very late or as an UDFA (someone like Rodney Kinlaw from Penn State). Then let Thompson, Coleman, and Kinlaw fight for the final 2 roster spots.

Thompson, Coleman and Kinlaw? If that is our plan at backup RB we are in big, big trouble. In a deep draft we can get a quality RB late in One or two. Not 3rd,4th string type practice squad fodder.

I'll be very interested to see what happens regarding Barber between now and the 28th.

If he gets a long-term deal, running back may slide down the list of priorities just a bit. Not off the list, just less of a must.

If he gets the 1st and 3rd round tender, all bets are off and anything can still happen.

It could mean that his asking price is prohibitive and Dallas might look for a future starter via free agency or more likely the draft.

It could also lead to his being traded in a 'McFadden scenario', althought I personally don't see that happening.

I would feel better if Barber got a long-term deal before weeks' end.

We're drafting McFadden, and any and everything Jerry says at this point is pure and utter smoke screen. Stop drinking the generic kool aid- it's for everyone else, not the Cowboy fans. Does nobody know our owner by now yet?

I disagree. If you look at Jerry's past he does not throw many smoke screens out there..... he tends to give out more info than he really should. I don't think we're trading MB3 and I don't think we're moving up for D-Mac so I believe Jerry.

The surprise RB he's referring to could be signing Michael Turner. I heard that Wade Phillips really liked him from his days in San Diego and he will be very affordable.

Oops.... I see someone beat me to this prediction in an earlier post! Well, I think it is a good possibility since there are no other FA RB's that excite anyone for the most part.

For all the talk of trading up, I just hope we don't trade down.

I almost threw up when we passed on SJAX and still get a sick feeling about it when I see him tearing up in STL.

Hopefully Jerry will remember that.

Kev

Just a note, Jackson wasn't our 1st running back on the board that year. It was Kevin Jones. So when you say that we "passed on Steven Jackson", we were going to pass on him regardless because we had Kevin Jones ranked ahead of him. Parcells had said he didn't see a huge difference in the top 4 or 5 RB's in that draft (IIRC, S. Jackson, K. Jones, T. Bell, J. Jones).
