i think he's going to have to come back a better player than he was before to make this worth it. or at the very least be better than a early-2013 nick hayden.

I think its a mistake will be lots of bad press for the team and organization will be a distraction

I bet that Israel lives down the bad press after it has turned the invasion down and into a cease fire now.

I tend to agree that he would be better off on another team. The Dallas media and fans can be relentless in hassling players. If he was on another team, he would get a fresh start and their fans/media wouldn't really care about a non-star DT.

Yeah that is true, but what does that say about our fan base and the Dallas media? Yikes! I still believe this is the best place for him to try and start over again, merely from the standpoint of his support group and Mr. Wells. Being around others who have had substance abuse issues I can say the support aspect of this is very important. I just wouldn't want to see him destroy all the hard work he has done.

Who are "they?"

The Cowboys typically never use the "RKG" phrase in connection with signing anyone. It's the fans that bring it up.

And I have no idea why your post was deleted.

"They" are obviously the ones who have moved and continue to move the goalposts whenever convienent on the RKG issue.

No one ever said that so-lame term meant "a perfect person" as the OP said. But it did generally mean a person of good character. And neither of these guys have shown that quality at all.

Do you remember all of the hoopla when he was on the sideline after the accident? The media spotlight on teams like the Dallas Cowboys and NY Yankees is just so bright that even players without Brent's type of issues have a hard time dealing with it.

But again, that's not something the Cowboys talk about, i.e. this "RKG" thing has taken on a life of it's own among the fandom.

I don't have a problem with the player (Demarcus Lawrence). I feel Lawrence has talent, but I have an issue with how the method was done. Our team has so many needs that we could not afford to trade up knowing our depth is weak.

If I'm wrong about this and Lawrence gets 20 sacks, please feed me some crow.

But with Dallas current track record (when it comes to the draft and free agency) the result is usually negative.

If you view the cowboys drafting ability as poor, then what difference does another pick make?

Oh no I remember all of it. I would just hope that all the bad press of that was because it was just a few days after the tragedy. I would hope the media will realize he went to court was convicted served his time and is working on putting his life back together. I guess that's all in a perfect world! Ha!

Character is subjective. Character that leads to success on the football field maybe but that is about the extent of it. What I see are people that are trying to project the public image that Landry used to espouse if sometimes look the other way onto Garrett.

Landry did hold the standard that most attribute to RKG.

2012 Josh Brent was better than the Nick Hayden I watched scrimmage. We have McClain and Bishop to play the 1 but depth is always a good thing. I haven't seen McClain yet so maybe we need 2012 Brent.

I can understand this and I don't know what RKG is supposed to be defined as but for me personally, no matter how I'd define it, this guy doesn't fit in with my plans.

For me personally I don't believe he should be playing football in the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys, or anyone else for that matter. I know that won't be popular with some people, and that's fine, but there is just no reason in my mind where he should be playing pro football after that.

I felt the same way about Little as well.

Jason has actually clarified what RKG means. It's basically a talented guy, with passion and heart and plays all-out every snap and is about the team. In the end, it's about the perfect football player that any and every coach wants. It's just a stupid term.

Even if he is reinstated I think the punishment from the league is going to be pretty harsh and he will probably have to miss a bunch of games. They may have been able to argue that his time away from the game should be considered time served but I doubt that will work as well now. I am sure the backlash from the light punishment on Ray Rice is not going to help Brent's case much.

I believe in second chances and think Josh Brent deserves a second chance. Good to see Jerry willing to let him make this 53 man roster and help this team out like he was doing BEFORE his legal troubles.

This is football and the guy should be able to have the opportunity to play football again if a team wants to give him a chance. People talking about distractions but I didn't see that big of a distraction when we signed Tank Johnson back in 07. The media is looking for a story we get it but you can only write about his past for so long before it becomes a non story. All Brent has to do is keep his nose clean & make plays and all will be well.

After listening to Mike Fisher, and Mickey spagnola, on different segments on the Fan, and David Moore on the Ticket. Some of the same opinions, and some different. But all seemed legitimate.

As to how Goodell will handle this, does the Ray rice, or any other previous decisions come into play. Some thought it may, others said it shouldn't, they should be treated separate.
Mickey said, it's Brent and goodell one on one, no representation, so Brent basically like preparing for a trial. He has to present to goodell, what he has done, what he is doing, and what will his plan be, to address this issue, and so forth.

He also said, Brent didn't have to retire, he could have still been paid the last 4 games of the season, and stayed active on the roster for the next season, unless the cowboys cut him. So by retiring, it was like a self imposed 20 game suspension. Which may or may not come into goodell's decision. Moore thought 8 games suspension, but wouldn't be surprised 4 games.

Norm on now talking about it. He says a year, regardless.

I have my opinions on the right and wrong of this morally, but I'll keep it football related. Why on Earth would we be keeping a roster spot open for a guy who hasn't played in over a year? A guy who wasn't exactly Randy White in his prime to begin with? Why not just say "we're open to giving him a tryout," or something more along those lines?

Because the night Brent was hammered he came from a team gathering where it was likely others were hammered and boy did this big guy shut up and take this one all on his own.

Whether that's the right way to do it, in taking accountability on your own. Doesn't mean that's how it goes down and if it did go the other way, especially involving the murder of another player, imagine what this team would look like and the scrutiny of litigation it could have also experienced being so high profile.

So sure Jerry is sticking with the big guy that didn't turn this beyond himself and onto the organization.

We need all the help we can get on the DL.

What in the world could it hurt to bring him in?

Get him in shape and get him on the field and let's see what he's got.

From a football standpoint, I'd rather Jerry would have said "we're open to giving him a tryout." Who knows if he even can still do it? From an ethical/personal standpoint, I have no problem with him playing football professionally again. He screwed up and was punished fairly according to the legal system, who's to say that he shouldn't have the "privilege" of pursuing his trained profession? Would it be different if a banker was in the same situation, and was told "sorry, you can't be a banker, anymore. You lost that right." Or a realtor or a store clerk?
