There is a blizzard of silliness on this forum lately based on failure to understand simple facts.

Myth #1. The Cowboys inability to trade Romo was because of Jerry's sentimentality or friendship with Tony.

The team didn't trade Tony for this simple reason: there were no trading partners willing to assume the risk of an injury-riddled soon-to-be 37 year old quarterback carrying a massive contract.

Proof? ESPN a few hours ago.
"Jones told Romo that he had waited to determine whether another team might offer the Cowboys something in a trade for the oft-injured quarterback. When that failed to occur following the NFL scouting combine, Jones told Romo he would release him and make him a June 1 designation, which will save the Cowboys $14 million against the cap this year."

Myth #2. Keeping Romo as backup would have only cost the Cowboys $5 million.

Not true. The Cowboys June 1 designation will allow the team the split the dead cap space over two years. Big picture, they save $14 million in base salary. They spread the dead cap hit over two years.

If you want to keep it simple just remember this: they will gain many millions in cap space immediately.

Not true. The Cowboys June 1 designation will allow the team the split the dead cap space over two years. First, they save $14 million in base salary. Secondly they clear $11 million in space immediately for this season. They also dodge what would have been a mammoth amount next season, only being on the hook for $8.9 in dead space next offseason.

If you want to keep it simple just remember this: they gain $11mil in cap space immediately.

Do the Cowboys gain 11 mil tomorrow after the release of Tony Romo is made?

If he is a June 1st cut, they don't get the cap space till June 1st. The only way we get cap space immediately is if he is a regular pre June 1st cut.

As some have intimated, cutting him isn't really the issue. The timing of cutting him is. There is no reason, other than some unfounded debt Jerry assumes to Romo, that they couldn't keep him a little while longer and see if offers came in.

Romo didn't lead us to a slew of Superbowls. He didn't even lead us to a bunch of playoff wins. He is a great guy and a good QB, but the team owed him nothing.

Another poor decision in a long history of poor decisions by Jerry Jones.

Not even a 7th rounder for Romo. I would think Brady gets at least a 2nd rounder despite his age.

Jerry really did a poor job not securing a trade. Romo should have played the last game in full. We would have had momentum going into the playoffs and stirred some trade talk. Releasing Romo for nothing equals epic fail

Romo's salary cap impact with release tomorrow--designated June 1
-$10.7 million on the 2017 cap
- $8.9 million on the 2018 cap

If we had kept Romo and let him go next offseason cap hit would have been:
-$24.7 mil on 2017 cap
-$8.9 mil on the 2018 cap

there is one good reason.
if they do not want to restructure other contracts.
then they could need his cap dollars while free agency is getting going.

Here's another myth: The Cowboys had to do something with Romo before free agency began. There was no rush. They should've held on to him until after the draft.

Depends on what the goal is.

Maybe...maybe we could have got a mid round pick for Romo down the road. But for immediate cap benefit this was the best course of action.

June 1 designation does not gain millions in cap space immediately.
