There is a blizzard of silliness on this forum lately based on failure to understand simple facts.

Myth #1. The Cowboys inability to trade Romo was because of Jerry's sentimentality or friendship with Tony.

The team didn't trade Tony for this simple reason: there were no trading partners willing to assume the risk of an injury-riddled soon-to-be 37 year old quarterback carrying a massive contract.

Proof? ESPN a few hours ago.

Myth #2. Keeping Romo as backup would have only cost the Cowboys $5 million.

Not true. The Cowboys June 1 designation will allow the team the split the dead cap space over two years. Big picture, they save $14 million in base salary. They spread the dead cap hit over two years.

If you want to keep it simple just remember this: they will gain many millions in cap space immediately.

Why would anyone trade for Romo at this point? Anyone with any brains would simply call Jerry's pathetic bluff and wait to see if he would release him first. Once Jerry shows teams he wont just let him go, then he would start to get offers. But of course, bad poker face Jerry couldnt pull it off.

The only reason any GM would trade for Romo is if they felt they couldn't win a bidding war to get him or Romo wouldn't want to play for that specific team. Take Buffalo for example. Not a place Romo wants to play. So the only way Buffalo could get him - via trade.

My point was that any team would wait till after the cut dates to see if Jerry would cut him first. And based on stories and Jones NON denial, it was pretty obvious he was going to release Romo.

The longer the Cowboys held onto Romo, the higher the value goes up for him. People would only trade for Romo if they were sure that Jerry wouldnt just release him.

Would any Cowboys fan be okay with us facing Romo next season and Jerry instructing Rod Marinelli and our defense to ease off the pass rush to help Romo? From reading some of the posts on here, some here would be good with that. Ultimately, that is what Jerry is doing now by "doing right by Romo" and giving both he, and our NFL competitors, the benefit of being able to sign him now for nothing while there is plenty of time make a decision like this.

Here are some examples of how this immediately helps our competitors:
  • Romo gets his choice of where to go, Cowboys lose all control over this situation.
  • Washington, specifically, immediately gets the opportunity to sign him, draft a young QB, and save a ton of money over what they would pay Cousins.
  • Denver & Houston get the opportunity to sign him and immediately make them legitimate SB contenders.
  • Any team that wants him now has time to build around/for him through the draft and FA as well as spend much more time with him in their playbook.
Facts around the post-June 1st designation:
  • The early release of a player with a Post-June 1st designation (if that is what they do) only immediately helps the player and the team he is going to, not the Cowboys.
  • The Cowboys are only helped after June 1st by being able to spread more of the hit over 2 years than if they released him outright now.
  • Money isn't freed up until after June 1st, so it doesn't give them any additional money under the cap to spend now.
  • Dallas has over $9 Million to spend in Free Agency, which should be plenty to meet their FA needs based upon their current philosophy.
  • The only real reason to let him go now with Post-June 1st designation is to help Romo and the team he goes to.

Got it. Jerry is more interested in helping his pet Tony over the Cowboys winning the maximum number of games.

Yes, that is what the facts are displaying for anybody willing to look at them. He is putting his personal affection for a player over the needs of his football team. Hey, its his team, so he can do what he wants, but that doesn't mean we all have to like it and drink the Jerry kool-aid like some on here are doing..."it was inevitable...Romo has no value..." ...gulp, gulp, gulp.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion.

An Occam's razor view of the facts are far more straight-forward and compelling: there was no trade possible giving the size of his contract and his age/health.

I prefer the Gillete razor view...looks like there might be some stubble on the trade beard...hoping Jerry can pull it off!

Funny how Jerry is an idiot for not trading Romo...then not an idiot when possible trading dance partners emerge. We'll see what happens. It will be an entertaining day.

I predicted months ago we might see two or three trading partners emerge and maybe land a third round or 4th round pick out of it. I also said we might get nothing.

All that has unfolded shows my prediction was sound.

You are entertaining! I believe that the decisions someone makes are a good judge of their intelligence, so yes it makes perfect sense to judge Jerry on this based on his decisions. I might need to take you to Vegas as your predictions assured you of getting it right no matter what happens!

There were lots of people on this forum suggesting we'd get a first round pick or a big package of multiple picks. Some were saying there would be six, eight, even 12 teams vying to trade for Romo.

As for Jerry's "decisions"...I suppose you think Jerry could forge a trade without any other teams to dance with.
