If they are making him a June 1 designation there is no reason to cut him tomorrow.

Right there, cutting him tomorrow and making him a June 1 casts doubt on the seriousness of Jerry wanting to really trade Romo.

He wants to give Romo as much time as possible to find a new home. It's just that simple.

If he was serious on trading him, hold him for a few more weeks or months. Then cut him as a last resort.

If he is a June 1st cut, they don't get the cap space till June 1st. The only way we get cap space immediately is if he is a regular pre June 1st cut.

I believe the rules are changed on that. I could be wrong.

One thing is beyond dispute: We avoid $14 million in base salary, which is the real cost on keeping Romo as a backup quarterback.

I'd love to see the reactions around here if Jerry traded FOR a Tony Romo in this situation...you guys would be rioting. But let's expect some other team to do it

JJ should have kept his mouth shut.
That may be true but that is not why there were no offers
How would you feel is Dallas traded picks for a 37 yr old qb who hasn't made it through the last two seasons and a big contract

Jerry will never find suitors cause he can't keep his mouth close. They already know what Jerry will do before he does it. If this was the Pats they would have gotten a 1st or 2nd for Romo. Even the Eagles got way over value from the vikings.

As some have intimated, cutting him isn't really the issue. The timing of cutting him is. There is no reason, other than some unfounded debt Jerry assumes to Romo, that they couldn't keep him a little while longer and see if offers came in.

Romo didn't lead us to a slew of Superbowls. He didn't even lead us to a bunch of playoff wins. He is a great guy and a good QB, but the team owed him nothing.

Another poor decision in a long history of poor decisions by Jerry Jones.

I've been as critical of Jerry as anyone here. But this decision wasn't done because of friendship, loyalty, guilt, or sentimentality. It was done to field the best team possible in 2017 and beyond.

Holding Tony for longer may--or may not--have netted us a mid-round pick. The Cowboys unlocked a lot of money for free agency, and as I understand it that money is available immediately (this last part is uncertain but I will research)

On the contrary...a lot of people thought Jerry would keep Romo...or haven't you heard Skip Bayless's constant drivel?

Jerry talks too much about a lot of things, but he kept the Cowboys intentions unclear in this case.

You're wrong.

Also, your premise creates a false choice: The issue isn't keeping Romo next year versus cutting him now. The issue is cutting him now versus seeing what trade market develops for him after the draft.

it is what it is, I hope he fails drastically wherever he goes. he is no longer a cowboy and dead to me....

Well, you'll be terribly dissapointed then, just wait and see, I'd bet he gets further into the playoffs than any year here in Dallas while playing at an MVP level.

Here's another myth: The Cowboys had to do something with Romo before free agency began. There was no rush. They should've held on to him until after the draft.

All Jerry had to do was keep his mouth shut and say he was keeping Romo as back up unless he got a trade offer and the offers would have come in

Jerry is a moron and the Cowboys are the losers

It is not free until June first. Guys like Romo are the entire reason for the ability to designate someone as a June first cut. If you hold him until June, his market dries up.

Yeah. 37 year old QBs with considerable injury histories always fly off the shelves

Not even a 7th rounder for Romo. I would think Brady gets at least a 2nd rounder despite his age.

If Brady had missed as many games with injury...and had seen his back cut open 3x...no team would be paying $22 mil and a 2nd round pick for him.
