Yep, but he wasn't traded to the Bronco's. He was pretty much the same situation as Romo. Injured and released by the Colts. Colts got nada out of Peyton going to the Broncos. Ditto when Favre was released by the Packers.
You can't compare the Manning or Favre situations with Romo and the Cowboys at all. Those situations were completely different.
Manning had four neck surgeries between 2011 and 2012. The Colts were faced with having to pay him a $28M bonus in the first day of the league year, and at that point, he hadn't thrown a football in over a year. He wasn't capable of throwing a ball at that point. If a team were to trade for him, they would have had to assume that same bonus as well as his base salary for the year, and had no guarantee that he would have been able to play again. If you remember, the Broncos signed him without working him out. It was a huge risk, but it worked out. The Colts, though, had no market for him due to the injury and the contract.
Favre retired from the Packers in February of 2008. He decided in May that he wanted to play again. He wanted to go back to the Packers, and wanted his starting job back. He ended up going to camp with the Packers, and wanted to either have his job back, or be released. The Packers traded him to the Jets instead.
Neither of those situations resemble Romo's at all. Romo, at this time, is healthy and capable of working out for teams. He has no looming roster bonus, and his base salary is very reasonable for a starting QB in the league. He hasn't jerked the Cowboys around like Favre did the Packers. The Cowboys are punting their cap relief until June - this fact alone makes it asinine that they are cutting him so soon.
