I think that is exactly what he is saying. He is saying he would not cut Dez but he would probably fine him and tell him he (Jimmy) was very disappointed in him. Makes me wonder, though, who JG would cut...

...with Jerry's permission, of course.

He cut TO and that was right after Jerry had given TO a big payday.

How do you discipline a guy like Dez? I don't think fines are going to do it.
I think you run the old MTV music video "Shock the Monkey" by Peter Gabriel. That might just get him to those meetings and practice on time.

If you like the guy, you discipline him in a manner in which he can understand: "Dez, you've been a very naughty boy. If you break the rules one more time I am going to take away your privileges and take away your allowance (fine) for the week."

I think everyone will agree T.O., not unlike Greg Hardy, was persona non grata by everyone at the Ranch. I don't think that is the case with Dez at the Star.

Nor do I at this time. I have to say I am disappointed that Dez did not go to the scheduled MRI and then missing a meeting. I think the Cowboys have addressed this situation with Dez and are moving on. Dez himself has acknowledged he was wrong and handled it poorly.

Jimmy treated players differently back in the day. The players knew it, he knew it and the media knew it.

One story goes that a JAG player was cut for sleeping in an meeting and a media member asked him what he would do if Troy fell asleep in a meeting and Jimmy said he would go over and tell him to wake up.

I think some people forget how unruly this team was during Jimmy AND Switzers time. Heck it is because of what those two let go on in dallas (white house, irvin in court, irvin going after player with scissors, haley acting crazy) that led to Jerry deciding he had to help clean up the image of the Cowboys and in doing so passing on Randy Moss and taking Greg Ellis.

I believe Dez is sincere about his remorse but I also believe he will do it again because that is who he is.

As great as Jimmy Johnson was, as the years go by, he is getting overrated. The legend of who he was as a coach keeps growing and growing. Same thing with Parcells.

I hope he is. I want nothing but success for Dez. I also expect a lot out of Dez as do the Cowboys which is why they paid out the contract they did. Dez owes it to this franchise and his teammates to give them his very best no excuses.

The best Jimmy story for me was in one afternoon in January 1994 sitting in Dallas traffic on 435 and Webb Chapel in north Dallas listening to Galloway's sports radio show, the week before the SF/ Dallas NFC championship matchup, when SF was dominating everyone.
Galloway was taking callers and all the sudden he says "wait everyone, we have a special caller who just called in. Jimmy Johnson is on the phone with us and has an announcement". Jimmy says, "Randy, you can go ahead and print it in 3 inch bold headlines, we are going to win the ball game this weekend".
I think every car on the freeway was listening because people were ecstatic. I was so pumped up I pulled over, went to the nearest bar everyone in the bar was bouncing off the walls. Looking back Jimmy probably had a few beers and said what the hell, I'm going all in. He had the onions and his team did just what he said. They owned SF that weekend and the rest is history.

I also believe it's his nature just to do what he wants, when he wants. Not out of retribution to the team but he's just never been disciplined when he was younger and does not understand the ramifications of his actions until afterwards. Then does not learn from it to not do it again but learns that an apology and a slap to his wallet will get him off the hook until next time.

Johnson: "He’s fine [without Bryant]. Dez, you know, gives you the big plays and you have to have the explosive plays. Just like yesterday on FOX NFL Sunday, Terry Bradshaw said ‘I wouldn’t bring [Tony] Romo back in. I would stay with Prescott.’ Even though he’s my good buddy, I disagree with him. Against the great teams, against the really great teams in this league, they’re not good enough defensively to live with their offensive approach right now. Tony Romo gives them the big plays. He’s going to turn the ball over more, but he gives them the big plays...and right now I don’t think the Cowboys are good enough defensively to beat the top teams in the league. They’re very efficient, offensively, and they can run the football and they can score some points, but they’re going to have to be better than that as a total team if they’re going to beat the better teams in the league.

Wanna bet?

He’s got a great supporting cast, a great offensive line and the top running back in the league right now and that’s allowing him to be somewhat conservative and protect the football. That’s what he’s doing so good right now. He’s protecting the football and he’s utilizing the talent around him."

Sure

Its like nobody watched or can remember Washington or us jumping on Chicago. All dink and dunk and being carried by the supporting cast.

We'll see

You discipline someone like Dez by benching him. Illustrate that his behavior is hurting the team, on the field.

Jimmy just keeping it real. Everyone takes the same approach, especially in this day and age. It would have to be something egregious to get a star player cut. But Jimmy just gave voice to a practice that is as old as the dawn of time.
