Anyone got a brief on it.

I think Jimmy's wearing boxers with parrots on them--or so I've been told.

Jimmy was undoubtedly a good coach but he had phenomenal talent.

Everything else about him was vastly overrated.

When you have Troy, Mike and Emmitt on offense, plus all that talent on defense well Barry Switzer won a SB with it.

Further what coach came out of Jimmy's lineage that could actually be a decent head coach? The one thing you have to give BP was that while he had issues of his own he spotted coaching talent and the system he uses works well for many Head guys.

Guys like Tony Dungy are hardly these dictorial demi-gods and they win plenty.

End of the day it is about talent. People catch up to schemes and players get immune to the hard grind of a tough coach. Talent is always talent provided it is healthy and on the field.

Jimmy built that team no doubt about it.

+ it wasn't like he wouldn't have took Irvin considering he had him @ the U.

sigh...

All on the 88 roster:
S Bill Bates
G/T Kevin Gogan
WR Michael Irvin
DE Jim Jeffcoat
WR Kelvin Martin
G Nate Newton
LB Ken Norton
T Mark Tuinei

Troy was to be #1 no matter who was coach, and Jimmy still wanted Walsh instead.

Jimmy didn't want Emmitt...

Yes, Jimmy played a large role in building the team, but I think he gets too much credit...alot of the groundwork was laid - nearly half of the starters on the first Super Bowl team were already there, and if Jimmy had his way two of the major pieces would not have been (Troy and Emmitt), so again, I am thankful for Jimmy, but he was not quite the architect he was made out to be...

It's been reported (I think it was Norm Hitzges) that Jimmy told Gil Brandt that Irvin was not a #1 receiver in the nfl and that he didn't think he was worth a first round pick. It wasn't until he saw Irvin in practices for the Cowboys that he changed his mind.

Yep, Galloway was saying the same thing just a couple of weeks ago. (Which I had never heard before.)

If Jimmy didn't want Emmitt than he would have never been here.

Just like Parcells saying he wanted Spears ahead of Ware.

At the end of the day he still took Ware ahead of Spears so you have to give him the credit for listening.

not the same...Jimmy tried to trade to get another player...when that failed he 'settled' for Emmitt...

It's not that he didn't want Emmitt. He wanted a LB that year and tried to trade up for Francis and Lathon when those failed he settled for the best player still available and traded up a few spots to get Emmitt.

They still traded up in the 1990 draft to 17 to get Emmitt. Was that all Jones or did others have a say?

Most coaches/GMs get too much credit, and too much blame.

I always look at the Jason Witten pick as a great example of this. There is no way Witten should have lasted to the third round, so Dallas lucked into him being there and got an All-Pro tight end.

Same case can be made for Emmitt and most other players not taken No. 1 overall. Now, that doesn't mean who you have in the front office doesn't matter because some have shown a better ability to recognize talent than others. But there is a great amount of luck involved in ending up with a Tom Brady, for instance.

That's one reason I think it's kind of futile to just judge a front office based on its draft picks ... unless a team like Dallas would have had the foresight to draft Tony Romo in the first round or the Patriots had done that with Brady. Then they would have gotten laughed at but proved they absolutely know talent.

I don't recall Jimmie's Miami Dolphins' drafts being all that special. The draft being a roll of the dice, I think Jimmie used the shotgun approach to get more chances to hit. Having all that recruiting knowledge probably served him ingood stead for four years as well.

Ok, he deserves the credit for listening. Which is far from " doing " or " building ", or taking the credit for everything.

When some folks were saying this same thing back in '96 and '97, very few people believed it. Now it's common knowledge.

It was actually THIS guy:

John Wooten

who convinced Jimmah Jenius to trade up for him because he got word that the Midgets were going to take him if he fell to their spot.
