It would be one thing hoping to get something out of McClain this year during the playoff run and another to count on him next season. We have already counted on him this season, so whatever you get this year out of him (if anything) is like finding money in the cushions of your couch. It is the same with Gregory.
If you have the roster space (undetermined) when they are ready to come back, and say they could give you 10 quality snaps each per game and have a bigger impact than what the Cowboys currently have then you start looking at if they can help you. The risk this year is minimal and the potential reward great.
Next year the analysis is very different. You know both are unreliable AND there will be options in free agency and the draft to fix their unreliability by moving on from each of them. But for this year, that ship has sailed, so if you can get something out of them by using duct tape and baling wire ...... you do it if it works for you in the short run.
Good post. I don't think the Cowboys anticipated being in this position when Romo went down. But here we are in position to not only wrap up the NFC East but home field advantage throughout the playoffs. So what is our biggest weakness? Defense.
So you have two troubled but very good players who have to sit out much of the regular season. But they're coming back, maybe rusty but fresh with something to prove.
You add Gregory and Ro to this defense, you think it won't be even better?
Remember, Ro didn't really have a training camp in 2014 and look what he did for this defense?
As for Gregory, he was hurt much of the season, but many don't realize what an impact he had on the pass rush. In the Giants game, he was pushing the offensive lineman into the backfield. In the Carolina game, he was putting pressure on Cam.
I can understand the sentiment of being tired of these to players (more so with Ro), but you have them and you're paying them. Might as well get the most of them.
