I believe it's a different test since the indicator is different.

Don't ask, don't tell, then. And take it back up in a couple years in the next CBA when it's even less of an issue, right?

It's so stupid. Does anybody actually care if an NFL player enjoys an occasional toke? I suppose the idea is that kids look up to these guys, but at this point the stigma isn't all that significant. Plus, if you're not constantly dinging guys for smoking, it's just not in the press nearly as much. We get more relaxed players, better players on the field, better net PR for the league...there's no downside.

Defensive starter.

It's probably not a significant player or JJT would have played up the jeopardy a bit more. "Cornerstone" or "key defensive starter" or so. Just a hunch given how unnamed sources get milked by the press.

I see it the other way. I don't know why the NFL puts up with these players. If they break the rules of drugs, get rid of them forever. The NFL is not a right. If Gregory, McClain, Gordon never play another down, fans will still watch. The NFL can replace these guys easily. Why waste time and a ton of money on them? I will never understand that. Fans will still watch the games.

I retired from the army and still work a job that requires a clearance. If I smoke a joint, I get fired. No second chances. Fired. And as my grandfather always told me...."the graveyard is filled with irreplaceable people"..... NFL needs to either make it legal or enforce the rule they have by completely getting rid of the player or nothing will ever change.

Don't get me wrong, I don't have sympathy for a player who gets caught breaking rules. They deserve the suspensions.

But given how the views on marijuana have changed in recent years, and given that a change to league policy is probably related to terms in the CBA that won't get addressed for several more, if the league can control the frequency with which it enforces testing at it's own discretion, why not take advantage of that discretion? If it leads to better play and a better PR outcome and doesn't hurt the players themselves any? It just seems like smart policy to me.

I agree with your point as a whole, But we can't replace McClain ourselves.....

I have more of an issue with self control. They know it is against the rules just as my job states I can be fired from my job for testing positive. These knuckleheads get 3 failed test and suspended 4 games on the 4th failed test. They have the chance to make more money than I will in a life time, it is time to grow up and stop the stupidity. I just do not feel sorry for these oversized children. The rule is simple and easy to understand just stop getting high. Hell after the career is done open up a weed shop in Colorado for all I care but while they are wearing the Star stop being stupid!!!

Yeah it just blows my mind. We have people here who feel weed is no big deal yet this no big deal seems to be hard for guys to control and willing to risk their career over and let their team down. Evidently for many it is a big deal who in their right mind would sacrifice millions over something as lame as getting high?

Even in states where weed is legal most companies still implement a zero tolerance policy for testing positive drugs or alcohol. If you want to work somewhere that has drug policy you have two options stay clean or work somewhere else. I guess the NFL decides it drops the "weed" rule for players it has to drop it for all of its employees like truck drivers, electrical technicians, security, etc.

Maybe the nfl needs to change the marijuana policy.

I know I know... If they can't stop then they deserve etc... Get tough on crime... Just say no....

The hypocrisy that they allow much more dangerous narcotics is laughable and becoming outdated fast.

th

Yeah, it's not dangerous, blokes. It starts off as a harmless puff while joyriding in Dad's car. Then it escalates. One morning you wake up with a marihuana hangover, taking that $10 bill from your Mom's purse for a bag of muggles. Then, one day, you find yourself pawning your Dad's bowling ball. Why? To get all high and far out. Yeah, that cheap motel you share with 5 men who normally live under the bridge in a van, is a haven for now. Marihuana needles all over the floor. Waiting for another injection to get high and far out and strung out again. Then, one day, tragically, your mom is weeping over you in the E.R. The doc gives it to her straight: You are addicted. it will take 10 years of rehab to get you clean and now your families finances are a shambles. And you know what, it all starts with that harmless puff while joyriding in Dad's car. Think about it hard. Real hard. Only dopes inject dope. High and far out take you only so far in this world. To the rave, to the Saturday Night Scorpion Stomp in Luling or to the Water Burger in Plano. I for one, am tired of calling parents in the middle of the night and telling them their son is addicted to muggles, assassin of youth. Yep, smoked a doobie brother and wounded 50 people at the Home Depot reunion. Mighty tired, mates!

exactly it is legal to smoke in some states but courts have already ruled business have a right to drug test and fire those who are high on the job and rightfully so. Business can be held liable for the actions of their workers. NFL has a right to say if you want to play in this league then one requirement is you are not using.

I have no sympathy for them either, in general. For me, it's a case of players being stupid in the face of a stupid prohibition. But as long as it's legal, or they don't get caught, and it's not performance enhancing, then I prefer the league not have a stance on it as it doesn't really affect the game. If they want to take the stance, that's their prerogative. Then the question becomes, how aggressively do you want to enforce it? For something that really doesn't affect the quality of play or reputation of the game, they're making a big deal out of something that doesn't really need to be a big deal.
