Joe Theismann: Any GM who trades for Tony Romo's 'damaged goods' should lose his job

Well in fairness, Sam Bradford and Matt Cassell were younger and weren't coming off some pretty big injuries.

Also to be fair, neither of them have ever been relatively close to as good as Romo has been. Romo is (potentially) 10x the difference maker either of them are. If you're starter is Fitzpatrick, Siemian, Alex Smith, Osweiler, you should be interested. I'd rule out Houston, but only because they just gave Osweiler wayyyyyy too much money. I'd also rule out St. Louis, as much as they could use him, because they won't wanna bench Goff now. They'd be a much better team with Romo this year, though.

Doesn't matter. People are acting like a team trading for Romo gets the Romo from 4 years ago. You said it yourself......... "potentially".

That "potentially" is a pretty big deal here. They are getting a QB who is 36 and has been shelved for basically two entire seasons with major injuries. People thinking he's more valuable than say Bradford are missing the point. I'd be surprised at this point if he got anything more than a conditional pick that might turn into a 2nd rounder or so if he stays healthy.

We were at the bar that night, we all said the Skins would now come back and win with Jay Schroeder as qb. The skins only got better.
Yes JT broken leg actually improved the team immensely. I know there are tons of fans and media who knew that then and where just too nice to say anything since the let break was so hideous and shocking.
JT came out smelling like a rose and went immediately to the booth which he failed at. Now all he has are a few weight loss and bladder control commercials.

The Cowboys only need 1 team out of 31 to be interested in Romo. Are you really gonna tell me that not 1 single team in the league will roll the dice on him? Has this guy not been watching football this season? The league is full of mediocre to terrible QB's, Romo will get a shot. Now, I'm not saying the Cowboys will get 7 draft picks for him, but they'll get something.

Someone may want him. I think the real issue here is really the price they will be willing to pay. I am sure there are a few teams that would take Romo if all they had to give up was say a 6th rounder.

Who's better......?

Romo or Osweiler?
Romo or Palmer?
Romo or Simien?
Romo or Fitzpatrick?
Romo or Taylor?
Romo or Bradford?
Romo or Bortles?

Those teams have talented rosters that are dying on the vine with bad QB play.

Joe Theismann is an idiot, and I know this first hand, by the way. Dude is a douchebag.

Well depends.............. is Romo going to be fully healthy?

That's the issue.

He's monumentally better, and if those teams don't have a quarterback, those rosters are going to waste. Romo is the only chance they have. There aren't any other trade options like him.

Personally, I want him here. I like the idea of the best QB situation in the NFL, bar none. Not sure if he'd be willing to stay if he isn't offered the chance to compete for the starting job though.

He's only better if he can stay on the field. Are you denying that's a HUGE issue at this point?

Again, it's bizarre that some of you are acting like he's not 36 years old and coming off of two major injuries that has shelved him for 2 straight seasons. He's a big health risk. It's silly to try to argue otherwise.

And the compensation will likely reflect that risk.

Manning was hurt just as bad as Tony with that neck problem. He managed to play two additional years and won another SB. Just saying that
these guys are athletes and Tony is motivated to give it one more try. Denver might be his ticket to the big dance if they can hold that team together.

Manning's injury was even worse because it involved his throwing arm.

Tony's arm and legs have been fine, and the back injuries are separate non-degenerative injuries which have healed.

And, he's rested for a year. :)

Of course not. If that wasn't an issue, he'd be starting here.

Peyton Manning sat out 2011 with a more serious nerve condition than this. Quarterbacks are the rarest animals on earth. If you don't have one, you have to take risks. It won Denver a Super Bowl. It might do the same for them again. Watch the Broncos closely.

I would tend to agree that nobody will give a top end pick for Romo (or even a second) but then again I would never believe that someone would have given up a 1st round pick for Sam Bradford after what he did with the Rams and the Eagles...but someone did...so although the possibility is slim...there is always a chance some team panics.

Manning was a free agent. It only cost Denver money. Teams hold onto high picks like gold.

I have little doubt some teams might want Romo. But they won't be throwing first rounders, for example, at us for him.

Even if ROMO is ratchet strapped down in a 'hoveround' he's better than those listed.

Tony Romo went 12-3 in 2014. He went 3-1 in 2015.

Almost the exact same team from 2014 (and obviously the same in 2015) went 1-11 without him...

He makes any team he plays for a playoff contender. You put him on a team like Kansas City, Denver, NYJ, Houston... and you're probably super bowl bound.
I think Houston would be a great fit. Houston should offer Dallas a 3rd before their team gets taken apart by free agency. That team is stacked everywhere except QB.

Former Commanders quarterback Joe Theismann has said for months that Tony Romo should quit football. So it's not shocking that Theismann, who led Washington to a Super Bowl win in his 12 years with the team, thinks the guy he deems fragile isn't leaving Dallas.

"Let's put this Tony Romo stuff to bed, OK?" Theismann told Bleacher Report Radio. "The man's had three back surgeries, he has a collar bone that's been broken twice, he's 36 years old, he plays behind - the last couple years he played behind probably the best offensive line in football [and] hasn't finished a season in the last five.

"Any general manager that would make a deal for Tony Romo shouldn't keep their job as general manager. It's a bad business decision plus what offensive line is going to be the same one he has in Dallas?

He's right in that GM's should be wary.
But it's gets downgraded some given the source: Joe is one the few ex QBs that has had any success that has been negative on Romo over the years.
In other words, I'm not so sure he would've said that about Denver getting Manning--who has better pedigree, but who had injuries so much worse.

I think a 3rd rounder would be okay. Houston would be transformed with competent QB play.

No what's "very silly" is making the assumption that he'll ever be the player he once was. Or that he'll remain healthy when he does get back on the field. Some fans continue to try to bang that drum, despite all mounting evidence to the contrary, and continue to embarrass themselves.

There's no medical reason to believe Tony will be any more susceptible to injury than any other NFL QB and if he's healthy and has an offseason to blow off the rust, I see no reason to think he'll be anything other than great. Minnesota traded a 1 for Sam Bradford and Houston gave Brock Osweiler $72-mil. I can definitely see a team that thinks it's a QB away offering a mid-round pick.

All you need is 2-3 interested teams, and you get that 1st-round pick, plus more.

Talib, Miller, Ware, Ward, Harris, Thomas.....these guys aren't getting younger. They don't have time to wait for Lynch to grow up. Their window is closing fast.

Romo on the Bronco's and they are the favorite to win the AFC this year. His talent is not available on any street corner and for those who do not have anything near it is a seductive bet on whether he can stay vertical. For those close to the playoffs and with a subpar QB(Houston) it will be difficult to deny his prowess.
