Its pretty hard to believe after all the cheer leading Marinelli did for the Ivey selection during the draft he is absent from the 53---and the practice squad.

It just goes to show you that Marinelli values effort and grit and thinks he can get by if the player has that.

It is no different than other "super coaches" like Tom Cable in Seattle.

Eventually, the "miracle worker" can only do so much. There is a limit to how much chicken salad can be made out of chicken ****. Or feathers if you want to be PC.

I'm sure Maranelli had some say in whether or not he should be on this team.

If that is true, then he had his say on two late round duds.

Rod needs to stay in his lane.

McClay is better at his job than he is.
That has always been the issue though.

Back in the Campo years, you saw positional coaches with huge input.

And let's be honest, the decision to hire Rob Ryan and his preferences really set us back.

But there is the problem with this organization.

We just seem to have a real decision maker who knows talent evaluation.

Makes things kind of hard.

I can't argue that point. My comment is more directed at Marinelli's choice of groceries.
He was a 7th round pick. If your roster is any good then most 7th round picks don't make the team and if they do then they usually don't stick. Marinelli liked the guy and we took a flyer on him. When was the last impact player we got in the 7th round (Jay Ratliff 2005). Geoff Swaim, Alan Ball, and Sean Lissemore have been our best 7th round picks since 2005. I am hoping that Noah Brown breaks the 7th round drought. Getting one good player in the 7th round this year would be a coup.

I've kinda thought something along these lines myself for awhile. I think he's a great assistant chef, just needs someone to buy the right ingredients for him. Linehan is similar, great assistant chef and can buy the ingredients, just needs someone to create the recipes.

If that makes sense. Lol it does in my head.

While I've been complaining about Rod's choice of talent for a few years now....is there any position that a 7th round pick would have made the roster? 7th round picks are a pretty petty thing to complain about imo. Choice of free agents signings/lack there of would be my gripe

They took a guy they thought might be able to do better than a typical 7th round pick. Then decided that he was just a 7th round pick. That doesn't mean that they were wrong for picking him vs the other guy that wouldn't have made the team. If it were in the 2nd there would be a valid point here IMHO.

Yes, far better he stick with the guy than admit a mistake. People would be talking about how great our draft class was if all of them made the roster. Truth is, you hit one or two 5-7th rounders and admit mistakes then you will be far better off than you are keeping guys because you picked them.

Man, I remember the coaches wanting to cut Goodrich after a year but being forced to keep him. We've got a much better culture now

He was a 7th round pick. Take a look at the % of 7th rounders that ever play a down in this league much less make a contribution, it's extraordinarily low.

YR

That's fair. But how many get that sort of cheerleading from their coordinator when they are drafted? Probably not many.
