Joey Porter cut by Steelers *MERGED*

Actually, no you don't understand. Maybe I can help you.

As it stands, the current players under contract for LB will only count $5-6 million against the cap for next season. That's 1/20 of the total cap for a position that accounts for 1/3 of the defense.

You might ask, how could this possibly be so low? I'll explain. Rookie contracts in the NFL, even for high first round picks, are minimal. Ware's contract is tiny. Burnett's contract is tiny. Carpenter's contract is tiny. In addition, the the non-rookie contracts we have for LBs (Ellis, Ayodele, and James) are all relatively cheap. For example, James' 2007 cap hit will be less than Singleton's 2006 cap hit.

Now I hope you realize that there isn't much money tied up in the LB corps. If you'd like for me to post all of their contracts and their cap hits to further show you why this is true I can do that later.

I hope this has helped you.

:lmao: The veiled sarcasm in your post makes me lol. It's a good thing I am not drinking anything.

It's just frustrating to see people going around spouting things off like, "we've got too much money tied up in LBs," when it's so painfully obvious that it is not true. I guess people see one or two contracts signed and a couple high draft picks and they just assume that there's too much money put in the position. Nevermind actually attempting to determine the facts before opening their mouth.

If we do go LB in FA...

I would rather Porter than Thomas.

He'll be much cheaper and Porter is more of a leader.[/quote]

Thats what this defense needs... Someone with an attitude..

Roy,Ware and Bradie are just too nice.. Not a fiery personality like Porter, Merriman or Ray Lewis.. His intensity alone would be worth shelling cash for.
I wouldnt be surprised if the Pats got him first though..

I'd bring him in a heartbeat.

He had an off year this year, but he was a monster in their 05 playoff run.

To me, it's not just his play that would help this team, but his attitude as well. This team hasn't had a guy with a meanstreak since Charles Haley, and we have plenty of talented but also soft players on defense.

We really need a player with an attitude and intensity of a Joey Porter, so simply for the intangibles I'd be all for bringing him in....especially if we're stupid enough to rely on Greg Ellis being the starter at OLB again.

Who would you rather have?

A mean and nasty 29 year old pass rushing threat that is seasoned in the 3-4, or a 32 year old player who had yet to play a full season in the scheme that is coming off of an injury that even 25 year olds have problems coming back from?

I think it's a no-brainer....the answer is Porter.

You mean McNabb the QB who throws up all the Time, the Same guy who wanted Garcia out so the Fans woundn't boo him when he chokes again?. The Same guy who Roy Williams ended his season 2 years ago?.

Good points, thanks for schooling me, I could do without the sarcasm though, however it would be idiotic to keep throwing money at a position that we are currently deep at, especially when we have holes that need filling. It makes no sense to sign a 30 yr old Lber, to take time away from our up and coming OLbers Bobby Carpenter and Kevin Burnett. Now I love talkin football but if you want to talk about crap coming out of someone mouth, look in the mirror, you condesending jerk.

i would wet my pants if we sign Porter!!!!!!!!!! the guy might a punk but he's the exact player this Defense needs. Someone that just lights the fire in his teamates and brings huge emotion onto the field. I love the type of football players on D that pop u and dont let u forget about it the rest of the game!!!

This defense definitely needs an emotional leader. Our guys are too low key and nice to be the crazy shizz-talker.

Move Carp to inside and rotate Porter, Ellis, and Ware?

How many sacks a piece are you projecting next year for Carpenter and Burnett?

You keep throwing out the word "linebacker" like its just one all encompassing position.

Porter, Carp, Akin, Ware.

Ellis can go into DE on passing downs.

Who knows in the Phillips 34, look what it did for Sean Phillips. Liustening to talkin Cowboys, Steven Jones mention Phillips thinks we have pass rushers already in House that maybe wasn't used the right way:

Whatley, Placitas, N.M.: Will Greg Ellis be able to come back from the Achilles tear and surgery? If so, how long will it take him to get to playing speed?

Mickey: We asked Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones about Ellis on Talkin' Cowboys here Wednesday morning, and he seemed very encouraged by Ellis' progress, pointing out how guys return from these Achilles repairs much better and faster than they did say 10 years ago. In fact, Jones said of Ellis fitting into new head coach Wade Phillips' 3-4 defense, "We certainly think Greg is a really good pass rusher. We expect him to be back full speed, and Wade is certainly excited about coaching him, so we have him coming back . . . (but) if we can find the right guy whether it be in the draft or free agency to complement what we already have, then we would do that. But at the same time, visiting with Wade, he sees some potential pass rushers on this team that he may see a little differently than what our staff from the pass saw." Jones went on to point out Bobby Carpenter and Kevin Burnett as two guys, given the chance, might be able to help with the pass rush.

We need that type of toughness in our LB core, and frankly on our entire team. This Porter will turn Ware into a beast (in games only) and will put serious accountability to our defenders, we will not be soft, that's for sure.

He's the guy that lights up your poor secondary.

Yeah, he really did light up Roy Williams' eyes when he threw the ball STRAIGHT to him :laugh2: Then he wasn't even man enough to finish off the game!

And I see you didn't fulfill your promise.

BTW: I don't really want Porter on my team, I'm just glad that his annoying smug arse got cut.

One more thing, about Ellis - Love the guy, he's been a great ambassador for this team for years, a stand up character, it's time to either restructure and be a bench player, or trade him.

He is not made to be a 3-4 LBr in space, and since no one has the guts to say it, I will.

If he can take the roll of a situational passrusher, or a part timer, then we're all good. But other than that, if we sign someone like Porter, Ellis never sees the field IMO. I'm not sure, but I don't think we use a 4 down line attack in the phillips 34, someone please correct me.

HAHA. Sorry for the condescending tone. Being a jerk, I can't help it sometimes.
