John Phillips has all but "Wally Pipp'd" Mr. Bennett..

Phillips looks nothing like Witten.

Both he and Bennett are blocking their tails off.

We run a base 2 TE offense and we need depth there.

Phillips is getting the vast majority of his snaps at FB.

I have no problem if we go out and get another TE similar to Phillips and get rid of the pure FB on this roster.

More versatility and size.

He reminds me more of David LaFleur, which is not the insult many on this board would have you believe it is.

LaFleur's career was limited by back injuries. He was a very good blocker and also a decent receiver.

I do think Marty's ceiling is higher as he is a better athlete. However, we've not seen him involved in the passing offense much yet. The times he has been involved have disappointed so far this year.

I still have hopes we can integrate him more. The true threat of the 2-TE offense is not felt until the second TE is a respected playmaker in the passing game as well. This is when you can have all kinds of baffling looks without changing personnel. We still see a fair bit of it anyways.

Deon is a great player, I wouldn't do that to him, and he makes key blocks too.

Marty has no potential til he proves what he can do.

Great?

Why is a 6th round rookie getting all his snaps then?

I'll give you good.

Moose was great.

He's not very good. He whiffs a lot. And has a knack for making inopportune holding calls. And he's not a receiving threat at all.

Deon has had atleast a dozen key blocks this season, I think John Phillips has the ability to become the next Witten, but I do not even think of getting rid of Deon for John.

Just imagine a set with both Deon and John blocking

I'm glad they didn't trade off Miles after his pedestrian first couple of years.
MartyB will come along. He's a good kid and he has huge potential plus; the best TE in the game to learn from.
He's not hurting the team, Romo has plenty of targets. Give the kid time lol.

Phillips the next Witten.

Slow down people.

Good blocker.

Gives you nothing as a down the field threat like Witten.

Witten is going to the HOF.

Phillips will be his caddy.

I'm not anti-Deon, I just think he can be upgraded.......

And quite frankly John Phillips has come in and done just that.

Question for the board..........

When did our running game start exploding?

Last 2 weeks.........

Thank you

I think he'd be an outstanding LT if he put on an extra 50 lbs.

The Steelers once turned a good tight end into a great left tackle in the 70's. Larry Brown was his name. I could see Bennett doing that. Better money at LT too.

Phillips and Bennett are in two different worlds.

One has all the athletic talent in the world.

The other will work as hard as anyone else in the world.

I think these comments by Witten are kind of telling...

Witten Show - Jan 6th

Maybe I am reading too much into it, but it seems like Phillips works so hard that the coaches trust him and will find ways to use his skill set.

With Bennett he's had opportunities and hasn't been reliable. There have been times he's not ran the right route (Carolina) or that he's had drops when he was wide open.

And with Phillips being able to play H-Back he's more versatile.

What's going to happen next Summer when Phillips shows the coaches he can block as well as Marty B is doing from the the TE set and they also know they can trust him in any situation because of his work ethic.

I would not be surprised if the Cowboys traded Bennett if a good offer came along this offseason which could bump them up in the first round of this years draft where they can get a top rated Safety. You combine their #1 pick with a #3 and maybe they jump into the early teens.

He has flashed here and there between this season and last season his ability as a receiver and it is significant - he won us that Skins game last year on a great catch. So we are not talking about things he cannot do.

Sometimes I do think young players that don't get alot of reps can't relax when their numbers are called and end up messing up on plays that they could otherwise make routine.

Ultimately, it may take a spell without Witten (hopefully for something minor like the flu or an ankle sprain) for Bennett to show what he is capable of.

In terms of his blocking, he has been awesome so far. He will become an even bigger factor as Felix becomes the #1 play because of all the plays we will try to run on the perimeter. I almost felt Barber was punished by having TEs in the game because he couldn't run to the outside and it just brought more players into the box for him to have to deal with. With his slow feet there would inevitably be a huge pile at the LOS by the time he got there. That's why the draw helped him out so much.

As others have mentioned, I would consider a high pick for him. Anything in the top 5 of the second round and I'd consider biting. I would probably pass on a late second rounder. Anything in between would probably depend on who is still on the draft board.

As well as the whole defense has been playing since Hamlin's return, I can't say I'm in that much of a hurry to trade up for a safety in the first round. Good safeties routinely slip down into the end of the first round (Ed Reed, Polamolu, Kenny Phillips for example)

Am I the only one who still thinks Bennett has tremendous ability we can take advantage of? It's great that we found Phillips with a late pick and are getting solid production from him, but I can't forget those plays Bennett has made that no other TE we have can make.

He might even make another one this weekend. ;)

I keep thinking he may do just that.

As I mentioned in my game thread, he still blocks the crap out of people and his enthusiasm is excellent. He was celebrating like crazy with Phillips when he scored that TD. Some players who have limited roles (or disappointed in their role) might let it get to them and maybe show little emotion or effort, but thats not been the case with Bennett.

Ever heard of Rayfield Wright? Or the LT for the team we just played, Jason Peters?
