His point is that Phillips isn't playing TE.

In 50 snaps in the last two games, he's lined up as a fullback 44 times and a TE 6 times. Once he replaced Witten, twice he replaced Bennett, twice was a 3-TE set, and on the 6th time we had no other TEs, which leads me to believe he was likely lined up as a FB and motioned out.

He's not taking time away from Bennett.

I like a post w/ beef. Phillips is the 3rd TE. As such, he should be wide open if the ball comes his way. All he has to do is catch it. That said, he has done that job well.
This is all positive for Dallas. We have one of the best TEs of all time as our #1. Our #2 is a beast blocker and our #3 is who Romo throws to because he is so down on the depth chart that no one thinks the ball is going to him. Brilliant!

We all saw What Sean Payton did to us a few years back throwing to a FB.

Yeah, theo. Makes no sense to me.

But back to Phillips, here's a random thought: As rookies... John Phillips or Anthony Fasano?

I'd have to say Phillips because he has been a much better blocker both as a TE and as a FB. He has also caught everything thrown to him. I can't judge him much on ability to run routes, though.

Reliable as Witten has been and no doubt headed for Canton, he already has seven years of NFL wear and tear on his body. If he goes down for any length of time I dont want to rely on Phillips to fill his shoes. To move Marty B it would have to be a big time offer, and I'm down on Marty right now.

as much as we run 2 and 3-TE sets, we would just end up drafting another one again. Maybe in the 3rd or 4th round this time.

It seems as though pass-catching TEs have become increasingly common over the last few years.

And how about Tony Curtis?

Curtis looked pretty good for a while there. And yet he's no longer on an NFL roster.

He made a few key plays back in 2007 as the #3 TE in the passing game - 3 catches for 3 TDs plus he recovered that onside kick against Buffalo. This allowed us to trade away Fasano and promote him to #2. But then he didn't do much when given the #2 TE role for 2008 and was released in the offseason. I think Curtis grew a big head as he thought that he was going to be some great receiver. I think we had tried to use him in the role we use Phillips as a TE who lines up at FB but Curtis could not block as a FB. So in the end, he just couldn't do what we wanted out of the #3 TE slot.

He's in his second year, it's pretty ridiculous to say trade him. What if we had given up on Miles? Spencer? Ratliff?

Bennett will be a star in this league, he's a ferocious blocker right now. It's only a matter of time before he completes his game.

Again, I have to ask, what are we basing this on? He was not a serious receiving TE in college. The fact that he can dunk over his coach doesn't necessarily translate to being a sound route runner in the NFL.

I think there is a good reason to question that he is suddenly going to turn into something that he has never been.

He is Witten JR, I see play and play again when I catch myself screaming WITTEN YES **** YES@@, then I see the 89 and go, oh **** nice play by John Phillips.

Marty B. should be sent somewhere as trade bait.

Mid first rounder at a minimuim.

I would say him being #2 on the Cowboy's roster would be a reason. ;) We must also suspect that those coaching him 5 days a week and studying his film along side his peers probably see things we don't necessarily get to. If he can't perform he won't stay. You know that.

I can't remember who was evaluating him, but he basically said that Phillips is a good pass catching option, but his run blocking isn't quite as good as Anderson's or Bennett's.

Curtis couldn't block and he was always open because nobody respected him as a threat and rightfully so. If someone actually covered him, he had nothing.

I can understand taking issue with the "only a matter of time" part of this post (since you never know), but the main point seems sound to me: you have a raw and very young guy who needs to learn and mature. It may take a couple years and it may never happen, but patience paid off with Austin and others.

Let Phillips push Bennett. Let them compete and fight it out for the #2 TE position. And even then, in the best Parcells fashion, take a look at TE in the draft. Big guys who can block, catch and run are always useful.

...as the H-Back because it allows Garrett to disguise his plays.

Witten, Bennett and Phillips gives hims 3 good blockers who can block people in space or release into pass patterns.

With Anderson you have lead blocker on runs, blitz pick up and dump off routes.

With Phillips at "H" you can run him in motion engaging a linebacker, then either release him or crack down on a LB or D-Lineman.

He will lead block on runs, blitz pick up, dump off, motion to block, motion to seam route, motion to flat...he's just more versatile.

He's in there because Garrett must trust this guy to know the play packages and Tony's audibles and does his job.
