Johnathon Cooper

he was released by a number of teams and now that's he is performance at his very best he is going to leave? You stay where people want you, only way Cooper leaves Dallas is if there's a crazy offer on the table.

I've been a Jonathan Cooper fan since his UNC days so I was thrilled when the Cowboys made him their reclamation project.

That being said, they really tried to give the job to Chaz Green, so if Cooper were to price himself out of Dallas' desired price range, they'd just go with Green again and let Cooper walk.

I'd be inclined to agree if it were not for Green being prone to injury. No way they should rely on him as a starter.

UFA next year. Resigning him while trying to extend Zack is going to be complicated. He's playing well, but I hope he doesn't get to expensive. Want to maintain continuity, bit if Coop gets a Leary type of contract we have to move on.
We have some big contracts to sign. Cooper,Martin,Lawrence,Irving,Hitchens,.

We will franchise Lawrence to make sure that he is not a one year wonder and get further data on his back. Martin we will sign this year probably just after the season. Frankly the rest of them will not be that expensive. With Romo's dead money off the books next year we will have room. The big contract looming of course is Dak's. we need to carefully manage things so that when he is due we do not cripple ourselves.

I think the experiment of Chaz Green at guard is over.
He is the swing tackle, and may be starting for Tyron this week. Tackle is where and what he is, injuries not withstanding.
Cooper is getting into a groove, playing with the big boys either side of him. He should thank his lucky stars he has landed where he is.

More worried about singing Martin. Then franchise for Lawrence, with a deal for Irving following after that. Cooper ought to get a reasonable deal for a couple of years getting paid like a starter. If he's smart, he takes the gig in Dallas.

As much as people want to see us be players in FA, when you hit on your picks and long-term VFAs like we have been, it's hard enough signing your own guys. Whiffing on a couple of mid-tier VFAs could be the thing that ends up costing you somebody in-house you prefer to keep.
Wish we could get his deal done like yesterday
Then you know what pennies you have left to spend lol
More important it allows you to use the tag on Dlaw
Until Martin is signed you can’t really use the tag

He's putting out good film and he is a former top 10 pick. The deal may well be near Leary territory by the time this is all said and done. I'd love to lock him up now.
The problem with that is, he has sucked in Ari, NE, and was OK in Cle. He is between 2 all Pros and has a third that plays the RG position to get advice from. He is ZBS lineman that has been a "failure" and injury prone until now. Jerry will also probably over pay because he rewards "loyalty" that way. Cooper was 1st rd talent, leary was UDFA arrows are pointing in two different directions during FA this year.

I really hate it but the odds are we will probably have to let Zeke move on when his contract is up. IF he keeps performing at this level. Just too much cap space would be needed. Keeping DAK and the O line and our pass rushers will really eat up a lot of the cap. We have seen what happens to teams that do not carefully apportion their cap just right. They end up with a serious weakness that prevents them from really contending for the SB.

Leary also had that ticking time bomb in his knee. I think that was one of the main reasons we let him go; but he wanted out when we gave Collins his job. So we would have had to have paid serious money to keep him and with all due respect Leary got more than he was worth from the Broncos.

We should be front loading contracts right now while Dak and Elliot are cheap.

The front office is around Lawrence, Irvin, Cooper, etc. every single day. How don’t they have the data to make a decision???

It takes FORESIGHT to make good signings and set us up in good cap situations.

Unfortunately our front office is dog **** at free agency, or anything that requires foresight.

Lawrence is a tough one because of his injury history. What if this turns out to be his career year?

we let him go because he made it clear he was not going to sign here after the Collins fiasco he saw the writing on the wall. Dallas was always worried about his knee and when they saw the opportunity to replace with younger, more athletic, and medically sound they did. I never thought Leary would be here long term.

We're actually going to be pretty fine with the cap. We can tag Lawrence, sign Cooper, and have room to spare even with Martin's 5th year option. Not sure how the 5th year option works when you're negotiating a new contract, but if we can start a new contract in 2018 over the option I'd do that, and try and cram as much of his contract as I could in 2018 and 2019 before we have to re-sign Dak.

We'll have a ton of space in 2019 too. Signing our own isn't going to be an issue. When's the last time we could say that?

We can actually do all of this and even pick up some halfway decent talent in FA as well. I wouldn't be surprised if we sign Cooper, tag Demarcus, negotiate with Martin, and then go get a player in FA. Depends on how much they want to rollover into 2019 I guess.

The salary cap is... in great shape in Dallas. Whaaaat? Combined with our incoming draft classes and hopefully some of these young guys improving (Taco, Tapper, Maliek, Gathers, Brown, Awuzie, Lewis, Woods), and we actually have quite a bright outlook.

Cooper must play well longer than most of one year before he will be a hot commodity, IMO.

I hear you, but he doesn't have to be a hot commodity. Barry Church wasn't a "hot commodity" and ended up costing more than we were willing to pay.

We are going to prioritize a few other guys over Cooper, I could see him ending up elsewhere if he's after a check.

I seen both green and cooper on the field at the same time yesterday... did anybody else notice this?

There is no way you franchise lawrence unless you want him to go to another team the seasons after franchising him.

We have some big contracts to sign. Cooper,Martin,Lawrence,Irving,Hitchens,.
ZMartin is already signed for 2018 at 9.3m......... a new deal will only lower his cap hit
Irving is a RFA ....he will sign for around 4m
Hitchens is solid but JSmith will be better next year....... 2-down MIKEs are a dime a dozen
Cooper is no one to invest in unless he wants 3/10m

DLawrence is the big case...... I wouldn't use the Franchise as a plan...... I would offer 4/50m right now with 35m gtd....... Franchising him only sets his floor at 17m+ and ties up the whole amount

DAL should be 30m under the cap next year before they even start cuts and restructures........ they have no issues with finding space

Glad to hear it.
I'm not sure why Irving would sign so cheaply there are some teams that would love his pressure on their team.
I'll buy on Cooper but if he plays out the season as well as he played the Steelers game I'm not sure you want to let walk.
Once he settled in our offense took it to them.
Does Lawrense get that top DE contract I am sort of wondering do we let Irving walk because we have a rookie DE in the waiting
and we cant spend so much [30 M}

Edit: Sportrac says Cowboys cap space is $9,669,868
