the article states his primary problem is lack of technique.
"Normally, such technique issues would be alarming for a player entering his fourth season, but Cooper is essentially still a rookie when it comes to live NFL experience. The good news is those kind of issues are correctable, and Cooper will know have arguably the best in the business in Dante Scarnecchia coaching him up."

The reason I don't believe in Cooper at this point is we are his 4th team.

One of his 3 previous teams was the Patriots and if the Patriots don't think you can play then I don't like your odds.

This is a league that is desperate for quality linemen and he has been cut 3 times already.

For us to get the quality we are hoping for I think it will have to come from Chaz Green.

If you would look into the situation a little more closely you would realize your error. And frankly thinking that BB and the Pats never make a mistake is laughable.

My analysis of Cooper was he was fine in pass protection. I thought his technique looked good for the most part. His footwork was very good, but sometimes his hand technique was off. Didn't look like a hand placement issue, but more of a timing issue and that could cause him to reach a little. Still, Leary was better in pass pro than he was in run blocking. Leary's run blocking could be very good at times, but he usually was average to above average and his consistency was probably his best attribute. The offense had some issues with Collins at LG last season because Collins' pass pro could be off although it was usually due to recognition issues. So if we can get Leary's type of pass pro, I think the offense will run well.

In zone blocking I thought Cooper was so-so. He looked like a guy that hasn't seen a lot of playing time and needs more reps. It's one thing to get reps in practice, but it's another to get actual game reps against an opponent you're not familiar with and who is trying to embarrass you at any cost. I didn't see any mobility issues or strength issues. In fact, I liked his quickness which is a big part of the battle with zone blocking. Zone blocking requires such precision to really get everything firing on all cylinders and Cooper was getting it right on some plays and wasn't on others.

I still believe if everybody stays healthy, there's no reason why this can't be the best O-Line, yet. I think Cooper has more upside than Leary (and I like Leary) and I think Collins has a world more of upside than Free. My guess is that Collins' size, athleticism and strength will provide an upgrade over Free in pass protection.

YR
On paper alone it is the most impressive 5 in the entire league in a very long time.

It's kind of a process of elimination that he starts. Collins was moved outside. Green is forever injured.

Should have tagged Leary and reevaluate next spring.
True
It's not like he took the job. More like won by default
But he has talent so this is his time to put in the work and earn a contract for his future

Take a closer look, specifically at the turnover along the Patriots's offensive line. They're the "anti-Cowboys" when it comes to investment and retention of those positions. It works for one reason - Dante Scarnecchia. As long as he's there, the team can make whatever they have work.

But to be cut by the Patriots as an offensive lineman means nothing more than joining a long list of names.

The Patriots don't really have high level Olinemen. The only guy I can think of is the guy that was aging and they traded to the Bucs.

The Patriots use a short passing game and they could play with a bunch of nobodies on the Oline and be ok.

Dallas runs routes that take a long time to develop. Our OL is crucial.

Regardless.. I'll be shocked if Cooper plays to his potential. Even the Browns didn't re-sign him and they have tons of money to spend.

Logan Mankins.

And yeah, when they shipped him out it seemed to indicate a change in philosophy, where they weren't going to be beholden to keeping offensive linemen, even great ones. They were confident enough to feel that Scarnecchia's coaching could get them out of trouble, and it has. I think he left for one year and the line crumbled.

They pick and choose their spots between short and deep passing game. But make no mistake, it's all about Scarnecchia's coaching.

Sometimes, but I do agree that I'd like to see more variation in the short passing game added in. And with Beasley and Switzer, I expect it.

I can't blame you for some measure of skepticism, but I wouldn't put a lot of stock in the fact that the Patriots cut him, they've cut a lot of people at that position group. And, to his credit, prior to injury, he had quickly earned a starting role with the Patriots. They just had no to,earn enough for him getting injured again and immediately pulled the plug.

Even the Browns didn't re-sign him and they have tons of money to spend.

If you can figure out what that team is thinking and doing, you're a better man than I am. What I do know is that PFF rated Cooper as the top guard for the week last year when he started for the Browns. I'm not sure what week that was, but I can look it up if you'd like. And a guy that can earn a grade like that, in any week, shows me he's worth something.

Jonathan Cooper on track for a starting job
Posted by Mike Florio on August 6, 2017, 12:57 PM EDT

A top-10 pick of the Cardinals in 2013, offensive lineman Jonathan Cooper has been a major disappointment.

He has started only 14 games over four years, bouncing from Arizona to New England to Cleveland. He’s on track to start up to 16 in 2017.

Cooper is listed as the starting left guard in the new-look Dallas offensive line, replacing free-agent departure Ron Leary. Cooper joins La'el Collins, who replaces the retired Doug Free at right tackle.

Mainstays Tyron Smith, Zack Martin, and Travis Frederick holding their spots at left tackle, right guard, and center.

And what happened to the great Chaz Green? Talk about having a starting job gift wrapped.

Hmmm interesting thought, has there ever been an OL consisting of 5 first round picks (I realize Collins was not 1st round pick but had it not been for unusual circumstances he would have been)?

Pretty sure that maybe two, at most three would be the limit. And I am willing to bet that of those three if it ever happened before two of them were tackles. For it to be one guard, one center and one tackle as it is now I am pretty sure never happened. If cooper starts that makes it two guards and I am willing to bet you never have had before two first rd picks starting at guard on the same line.

I appreciate the cap management aspects that are creating both a dynamic and retainable team into the future. No complaints from this Lady.

If you want to believe Dallas Cowboys.com's Bryan Broaddus, Cooper lost a lot of his mobility after breaking his leg as a rookie in Arizona. He says Cooper plays with power but has a lot of trouble in space and blocking targets on the move.

However, he will be surrounded by all-pros, and perhaps they can help raise his level of play as well.

I didn't see a lot of power from Cooper in Thursday's game. I went back and watched him closely in the first half of Thursday's game. He did a good job staying in front of his man but didn't get much movement either when in-line blocking or on the move. On a couple of pull plays, he didn't get where he needed to be. He looks like he could be a good-enough player, especially pass blocking, but he'll get pushed back into the pocket some on passes and isn't going to drive block defenders on runs. And keep in mind that this came against Arizona's reserves, so it could be worse than that.

Would be nice if he has a rising career like Richie Incognito had when he went to Buffalo.

I think Cooper has the talent - it's most likely something to do mentally.
And coaching.

We feature our OL and its obvious they have set their own standards.

Cooper and Collins.and Green have alot of ground to cover.

Injuries have been their undoing.

We will see.
