I can't believe so many Cowboys fans are being so hard on Jones when he is a STARTING running back averaging over 4 yards a carry.

Yes, Barber is averaging more as a backup, but all I've ever desired is a starter breaking the 4-yard mark. A thousand yards can be very misleading, but usually yards per carry can tell you whether your starter is being successful overall or not. (Although yards per carry for a backup can be more skewed by a few long runs.)

If Jones was averaging under 4, I could understand the uproar. But at 4.1, I think he has shown he deserves more respect than he's getting. Go back and look at the great Emmitt's career numbers — he only averaged more than 4.2 yards per carry (twice) in four of his 15 seasons.

he is the same streaky back he has always been and he falls too soon and lacks vision. He looked a ton better earlier in the year, and his 77 yard run againt the saints helped his average quite a bit. He is a one dimensional back with little to no vision and he rarely runs with the kind of heart I want to see in the Starting running back of the dallas cowboys.

Tell me what starting running back's average hasn't been helped by a long run or two.

Take out his 77 yard run and he is avergaing 3.81 YPC.

If this helps anyone.

Other notable NFC backs with longs runs:

Shaun Alexander's hasn't.

Of course, he's averaging just 3.4 yards per carry.

you can count on good backs to break like at least one 20-30 yarder a game julius does it about every third game. Thats not good enough. He is a decetn back but far from special and why on earth people take that so poorly so as to feel a need to take up for him I don't know. No good backs run into their o-line as much as julius does. He looked like he might be special he isn't thats all there is to it.

And that somehow makes Julius' YPC more accurate? Exluding the 77 yard run, he has a 3.2 YPC over the past 9 games. You can be happy about that all you want.

I'm not totally defending Jones. I'd like to see him make better cuts off his blocks and break more tackles, but I think the production proves his effectiveness overall.

We tend to let a game or two or a play or two affect our opinion instead of looking at the overall picture. To me, the overall picture of 4.1 back with clear room to improve is pretty good. If he learns (or relearns) to make a few of those cuts he's missed, then think what his average would be.

I was just messing around but I did post some numbers if that helps anyone.

wasn't eddie george averaging about that when we gave him his walking papers? What about A-train? That number is proably close to both those guys and both those guys were sent packing.

The great Edgerin James has been quiet this year as has Cadillac Williams and stat wise aside from the hype Reggie Bush is not breaking away as a runner.

Emmitt was a TD machine and he didn't come out of the game in the red zone. JJ does.

Wel they were old.

BP likes or liked him so he will get some time to make up for his lack of production.

No, that makes Jones' YPC typical. No starting running back builds a 4-plus average on short runs.

So now you are comparing Julius "Tapper" Jones to the NFL's All time Leading Rusher? :lmao2:

He has averaged 3.9 yrds a carry for the last nine games, aside from the Saints game he hasn't averaged over 3.8 in any game during that stretch. You take out that one play he has made in the last 9 games, and he is averaging 3.1 (if you round up 3.2)yrds per carry. That is what smart people like to call a bad rb.

This is his third season??? He is still inconsistent, lacks vision, and can't follow a block.

A 4.1 average makes Jones a good back. I didn't say he's special. Tomlinson is special. If you can get me one of those, I'll take it.

The overall picture isn't that his season average is 4.1 that doesn't tell you what type of runner he is right now. Have you even watched any of the last 9 games. We can see what kind of runner he is a bad one. And yes you are totally defending him.
