Jones Says Record Won't Be Deciding Factor For Garrett

What's it going to be then, eh?

Every coach makes tons of mistakes through the magic of hindsight. Kinda like when Garrett ran the ball against the Lions last year and had the nerve to assume his all-pro tackle wouldn't commit the only holding penalty he would make all season at the worst possible moment. I mean, how could Garrett not know that?

So, Garrett is just unlucky?

Yes and some of the very same people who are vocal now were amazingly silent then.

Never made it a secret that I was not a fan of Phillips. The disconnect between the offense and defense was very clear as Garrett was doing his thing and Phillips doing his. All under the same Jones dysfunction umbrella.

The only difference between now and then is we have Garrett in the Phillips role and the disarray is on the other side of the football. But there is not a head coach in waiting there and they can just scapegoat who they want to from year to year.

Maybe they are trying the "coaching continuity" thing, huh? Since Garrett is now the HC and there is no one else in the wings to take his place perhaps they can now focus on building something instead of trying something different every three years or so.

The team has gone from one of the oldest to one of the youngest in the NFL and despite the 8-8 for the last few years, they are at least average considering the injuries, the salary cap (which is getting fixed) and the "never quit" attitude that the Cowboys have had even though they had players from Home Depot coming in to try and help.

Some of you guys want a new HC each year the Cowboys go 8-8! You cannot build anything doing things that way, period. Now, Garrett has learned a ton of things that he has done wrong, so he is learning and I assume Jerry is letting him do that. But, Garrett has also done a lot of good things with this team and if you and others cannot see that...well, I don't know what to tell you.

I can tell you that if you get your wish, and the next HC named for the Dallas Cowboys comes to town, he is not going to magically make this team into a SB winning team his first, second or third year, because he will want to do different things, and then...here we go again for another 3 or 4 years of not winning a SB. I don't really expect you or some others to understand that continuity in a good way outweighs continually changing things every 2 or 3 years hoping that it will get better, because it does not work that way in today's NFL.

Garrett never should have got this job. he got it because he is Jerry's puppet.he would have been fired by any other GM in the NFL. no good coach will coach for Jerry anymore. so he is going to keep the puppet.

Whomever you want. I trust you just fine. One question, if he gets an extension that would take him to 10 years do I win?

~grin~

I took your wager to mean his being coach for 10 years, did I misunderstand you?

No. I think he will be here that long, and even longer. I always have. I am just asking if he gets a 6 year extension that makes it 10 years he is under contract, do I win? If you say no, it's cool. Just asking.

Continuity comes from the coach showing something early, look at the tenured coaches around the league they all showed something tangible early

If he sees that deal to its' completion, I'd say yes. But we both know coaches can get canned with several years left on a deal.

I'd be fine with having an independent arbitrator decide.

Obviously if he sees it to fruition I win. I'm just trying to get my steak sooner.

Some did, that is true. However, not all teams are the same. The current coach, Harbaugh in SF would not have come to the Cowboys and had the same success that he had in SF.

The same way that had Payton Manning came to the Cowboys instead of the Broncos, the Cowboys would not have been in the SB.

I can see that comparison, and thanks for a civil response as well...

Ok, let's make test 10 years the clear guideline.

He head coaches here for 10 years, you win. He doesn't, I win.

Although another year of mediocrity and him sticking around may drive me away so you may gave to track me down!

;)
